The first thing you should be concerned with is finishing the race. A good set of skids and 6 ply tires, is a good start. The second thing is suspension. A good suspension setup will make you faster than any motor work ever will.

They are nice, but definitely not needed. Tireballs would be next on my list, after suspension. Not only do they prevent flats, they absorb alot of the small rough stuff like roots and rocks. Almost like another set of suspension.

I personaly love flexx-bars, wouldnt run without them. But some people dont like the bends and rises the come in.

To get a 400EX competitive in harescrambles check out my sig line. It's everything you will need but first I would start out with tires and you'll need a tether and safety equipment. X-rex are awesome and very reasonable. Do an online search and you'll find what you need.

there was a transmission recall on the 2005's. i have one myself. i would get your vin number and go to a honda dealer ans see if yours has been fixed for the recall.

Agree! Tires, suspension, good steering dampner, work on consistancy and getting all the controls hand and foot comfortable for you! When your bike stays together when you get back to the trailer, and you can hold it 3/4 throtle 70% of the time your ready for motor!Oh and dont forget good strong hand guards!

Steering stabilizer and tires are definite must haves. The ccp stabilizer is about 150 bucks shipped and its amazing. I absolutly love mine, suspension is also somethin else that you should definitly look into upgrading, it'll be the one thing that'll letcha go a whole lot faster without touching the engine.
