I have a 2004 yfz450. When i bought it, fifth gear was slipping. I rode it that way until the gear went out. I split the cases and replaced third gear. The cogs were gone. put it back together and i was back to square one. still slipping. so i split the cases again and replaced the shift fork. that helped a lot, but its still doing it slightly and im sure it will only get worse. what is causing it to slip?

We had a problem with third gear we had to replace a lock type washer/snap ring in trans . I dont remember exactly what part it was but if i look at parts book i can let you no what part we replaced if you need.

quadrider2112, has yours gotten worse over time? I've been avoiding using 5th for now until i figure out what to replace. Meanwhile I'll keep riding my KX250f! It'll smoke a quad's *** on mx. BTW my quad is for sale. 2004 YFZ450 sparks exhaust, kn filter, tusk nerf bars and grab bar. $2100 as is.

The part is a circlip,it keeps the gear from sliding up and down the shaft. When ours was broke it feelt as if the clutch was slipping, could not figure what was wrong took shaft to a buddy that had a good trans out and compared turned out uor third gear was moving on the shaft to much and that is when we seen the clip was missing. If you look up a parts diagram it would be Ref# 15 part # 93440-28062-00 Hope this helps you out.
