Hey guys,

Figured I'd make a thread for my project. Back in October I picked up a 2001 Honda CR125 in Michigan, had a bit of an adventure exporting it/importing, and successfully got the bike back into Canada (and saved a good chunk of money doing it this way!)

I knew that the rear spokes were loose (so the wheel would need to be trued), and they guy said that it could probably need a new piston ring (aka a new top end rebuild!). Being a nearly 10 year old bike, I knew that it would probably end up needing more work than what was listed above, and I was definitely right! As you can see, I'm 17, and wanted something as a "project", I really wanted to rebuild a top end so that I would get some experience working on engine internals. I've been into cars since I was as a kid, and recently got into ATVs. My dad is very knowledgeable mechanically (he is restoring several cars at the moment) so he is a great source of help to me!

So far, I have disassembled and cleaned the carb, oiled the air filter, lubed the throttle cable, and done some other minor things. Mostly have been riding it haha. This last weekend though, I discovered that I had an exhaust leak - a lot of black liquid was coming out of the start of the exhaust. Also when I was riding, the RPMs shot up all of a sudden. I wasn't sure what it was, but my dad said it was probably a leak somewhere. I pulled off the expansion chamber, and sure enough, a rubber gasket/seal had broken. I have ordered a replacement. I also looked at the piston when the expansion chamber was off, and noticed some wear. I will run a compression test next weekend.

This weekend, I will be picking up a few parts from my relatives in Michigan for the bike. Over the winter, the top end will be rebuilt, and the rear wheel trued. Carb will also need to be properly jetted. Also going to order a new front tire (it's cracking on the sidewalls), a new sparkplug, an hour meter, an 05+ front fender, and an 05+ airbox boot.

I'm picking up the following parts this weekend:
-Renthal Chain & sprockets
-used OEM front sprocket guard
-V-Force Delta reed cage
-ProTaper CR Mid bend Contour bars
-ProTaper Fat Bar clamps
-N-Style graphics/seat cover
-FMF re-pack for the Turbinecore that was included
-PC Racing plastic renew kit
-exhaust flange gasket

And possibly an FMF or Pro Circuit expansion chamber.

That is exactly the type of bike I want as a project, good luck with it!

You shouldn't have much trouble doing the piston. They are very simple to work on

Thanks! And yeah, it took me a while to find that right bike for a project. Most bikes down in MI either seemed to be in awesome condition (and asking too much!) or a pile of garbage (and also asking too much!). This guy wanted $1300 and I got him down to $900 so I was pretty happy.
