So an opportunity has came up where someone wants to get rid of there 86 250r wich is bored to 330 fatty pipe new carrier, tether kill switch and a couple of other things...the guy wants to do a straight up trade for my 01 bone stock ex.. So the question is do i go to the two smoke world or what? i have a friend thats gonna go with me this week end that knows 250's in and out so he can sniff through that thing. I guess his whole deal is he used to have a 02 ex back in the day and always wanted one again

Not a big fan of the '86ers. And if that thing is punched out to a 330.... When it blows and it will, You're lookin at a new Jug and then some. If you don't know how to work on 2-smokers it's gonna cost ya big bucks to repair and maintain. The reliability compared to a 4-stroker is not even close. The '86 is a short stroke Engine with some major work in it to bring it up to 330. It's maxed out and I wouldn't trust it. IMO if I were you and really want a 250R, Try to find an '88 or '89, They're long stroke engines and much more desirable, Reliable and valuable. I personally wouldn't touch anything bigger than a 310 big bore either. Do some research before you make a move. JMO

actually they went to long stroke in 87, and all thats needed to make it a 330 is a cylinder, and most of the kits have 2 or 3 overbores available, i would find out which kit he has and if that kit has ever been over bored. and two strokes are way cheaper to maintain, compare cost of a top end to a 4 stroke rebuild. if jetted proper it will last just as long, if u race it then a set of rings at the end of the season should restore it. the reason most want an 88 or 89 250r is that the 88/89 a arms ar 1" forward and the swing arm is aluminum and 1 " shorter, almost identical to 400ex swinger. the 86 might not handle as well as a 88/89 which is pretty much same geometry as a 400ex but to a casual rider they wouldnt be able to tell. and if a 86/87 250r has after market a arms on it they are already 1 inch forward to correct the geometry to match the 88/89. the 86/87 is a few pounds heavier mainly in the swing arm and frame but all the 250rs are lighter than the 400ex. id trade a 400 for a 250 any day, just check the frame close for any signs of breaks or previous weld fixs.
