polishing questions....

hey,

i have a question....whats a piece of aluminum on my 400ex that is easy to polish besides the motor mounts....i just want to try it and see how i like it....

brake rezzy cover, throttle cover..thats what i did and i liked it

Brake rezi cover will be about the smallest and easiest.Throttle cover is kinda tuff to get all the stuff off between the letters.but a toothpick cleans it out pretty good.

heres a tyhrotle cover i did...it was dusty though, if you look at the reflected part thats how the whole thing looks

throttle cap and resi cover are pretty easy, handlebar clamps arent to bad, oil filter covers not to hard either

What do i all need to polish stuff? And do u think i can polish a raptor oil tank? And what about cases on a raptor is that difficult or easy and how long will it take me?

luvmyex I thought that the clutch cable holder was steel? do you have a good coat of clear on it?

alot of guys use eastwoods stuff.I got all mine local from a rock and jems place.You need 2 buffing wheels.tripoli,white rouge(mine is called fabuluster) and various sandpaper from 200 grit to as high as you want to go. 2000gr???and some good paint remover.and your all set.oh yea alot of time if you want to do a oil rezzi.That took about 8Hrs the first time i did it.about 45 mins today to clean it all up.

What did you use?a drimel with a grinding bit ??? you need to do some sanding on it and it will look alot better

It looks better now. Its pretty scratched, i gotta still sand it more, and re polish it

I stripped it, and then used some sand paper. No grinding bit. then i polished it

hey, thanks for all of the help....i started out with my stator cover....so far its goin pretty good....i sanded it all the way up to 600 grit....still haven't found anything that is more than 600 but then again i only went to a little hardware store...and i still need to buy some buffing compounds....everyones polishing looks good....thanks again....

try advanced auto or any parts store for the higher grit sandpaper.

I think i have,but i dont think some ever will:rolleyes: Are you going to clear powder those pappy?They look great now,but soon as you ride one time the boots are gonna rub that pretty shine off.

no...i didnt do them...i had a polishing compny do them.

hey....noone said blingage was easy.....u want it lookin tight...then u will work to keep it that way:scary:

pappy, please let me know how much the polishers charged you to do that, you can pm me if you want. the shops around here charge 55 bucks an hour, and minimum of 8 hours, so i cant afford it!

i got these done for $60 plus i pc'd a few small things for the guy. he gets $60 an hour also....these fellas aint cheap...but the work is incredible.

i have a line on another place that is supposedly way more resonable....i will get some prices and would be happy to put ya in touch with them. i dont trust just anyone doing cases...even with a polishing wheel they can be screwed up.

Oh i know its alot of work.It just too big of a pain for me personally to keep taking off the cases.I try and stay away from the high contact areas.I had to polish my starter cover after every ride.So i tried to clearcoat it.Didnt help now it really looks crappy i have to strip that off now and just keep polishing i recon.

the problem most average guys in the garage have is that they dont get the metal finished correctly( thats what the polisher told me) he said also....if its done correctly then all it needs is basic buffing with a good maintainer wax such as wenol.

i too have had problems keeping stuff i have polished looking good....but if i keep up on it ...it did ok.

i can see his point....every part i have ever done or seen done by friends still has scratches and light marks in the finish. he showed me the difference...and the light:p with the part finished properly it will have a smooth as glass finish...no where for dirt to get into the marks left by joe average. makes sense to me:p but he added that if proper maintence and continually keeping the finished part clean and free from contaminants isnt practiced....no finish will last.

the dude sounded pretty knowledgeable to me.....he doesnt do bike/quad stuff....they specialize in fine metals....and had some kickass brass...gold...silver etc peices being done....including a trumpet that was twisted like a pretzle:confused: seemed an apprentice let the buffing machine kick his ***:eek:

I dont really seem to have a problem with the dirt.I wipe off the part after every wash and it looks good.I was talking about rubbing it with mud on whatever is touching the part and it takes the finish right off,so i have to buff it again.But all that he said does make sence.

I was thinking about doin that but didnt feel like sanding it off

when i first saw the pic i thought it was a side case and i was trying to figure out how u managed to sand the honda thing off on that :huh
