When I say new rider, I mean new rider..... I'm 33 and I had always wanted a quad, or dirt bike, so with permission from my wife I took a trip to my local Honda shop. I ended up buying a new/overstock 2008 400ex. My problem is I have only put maybe 3-4 hours on her, and I already feel the need to squeeze more power out of it, is this normal or am I suffering from a disease......

I love it so far.

completely normal
No matter how much work u put in it to make it faster or better u will end up getting used to the power then you'll want more.

It is a disease, if tri5ron tags in here he will probably tell you about A.A.D.S.

let us know how that bone stock ex starts in the winter :)

The best thing you can do if you want to gain some more thump is throw a slip on on it and re jet.

BOY-O-Boy-o-boy-oboyoboy.....
GOODIE-GOODie-goodie-goodie.......
I think I may have died in my sleep and gone to ATV Heaven.

A Newb that is a Brand New Rider,.....
On a brand new Quad,...

That is NOT a, "still-wet-behind-the-ears" "Expert" "Know it all",....

Who does not have a ridiculous quest to beat a 450,..
(evident by the fact you are 33 yo, married, and could have bought anything you wanted),...

Who I can relate to,....
and mold into,....
a well informed, well equipped, reasonable, intelligent, capable, rider,....

Yep,... that must be what happened,... I died, and went to heaven !

By GAWwwd,... There just MAY be some hope and salvation for this forum YET !!!

Get Ready,..... This is going to be a LLOOOOOoonnnggg post ! HAhaha !

First off, YES !, A.A.D.S. is a Disease.
That I,... in my infinate,... (self proclaimed),... Wisdom,...

Identified long ago, as a affliction that we are all born with.
In some people, it remains fairly "dormant".

These people, who have the "Dormant gene",
usually can be found to wearing Sierra Club tee shirts, eating Tofu/Bran/Wheat germ/ muffins,
and have Rainbow Colored bumper stickers,
on the back of their 1966 VW Buses painted with Flouresent Daisies, and Unicorns, and listening to songs like "joy to the world", and identifying with Hare-Krishna, or some cult in the Himalaya's....

for the rest of us, where the gene becomes DOMINATE,...
We become ATV, Hotrod, Horsepower yearning, Performance Improving, GEARHEADS !

Apparently, you fall into the "Dominate Gene" side of the world.
LMAO !!!

So Lets get started,.....

Before you do ANYTHING ELSE,
Go Buy A Honda Service Manual.
It will be an Invaluable resource, and also your new best friend.

remember that there is a difference between "Mods" and "Accessories".
Things like, Bumpers, Skidplates, Frame guards, Hand guards, Bars, Wheels, Tires, Scoops, Graphics, etc. are "Accessories".

Since it has'nt been mentioned yet,
first thing I'd recommed is Safety.
A good set of nerf bars, if you don't already have them.

Next, I the vote for suspension improvements, before engine mods.
(The stock front shocks on a 400EX are commonly reffered to as "Pogo-Sticks", and for good reason).

I changed my front shocks to 450R w/Works triple rates, and trails that I would take in the top of 3rd to the middle of 4th gears, I am now pegged in 5th gear.
(contribute some of that, to also having a good Steering Stabilizer)
and I have yet to get the rear reworked by GTT w/ new link.

Once you've got the suspension to where it can handle more engine power, then pretty much the sky is the limit.
Depending on what you want to do with it, and what style of riding you want to do, will determine which engine mods, and in what order to get them in.

but for basic engine mods, on stock bore/compression,
(while maintaining the proven reliabilty of the 400EX),
then the order would be:
Sparks key, Exhaust, Intake filter and re-jet, cam, 450r carb.

Of course, you can go nuts from there, with bigger bores, higher compression, (at this point you will need/MUST, install HD studs), (and is also recommended to use a larger oil cooler,and/or oil tank), even bigger cams, and if cash is no limit, then go for broke and turbo it!

Basically, the 400EX is one of the most mod-able quads out there, that is only limited to how much you want to spend.

Hope this answers your questions,
and Welcome to the Disease...

BTW- It is a falacy, and misconception, that stickers, Purple Power bands, Muffler Bearings, or High Temp Turn Signal Fluid, add any horsepower at all...

But it is a Scientifically Proven Fact,...
that YELLOW 400EX's,
have 647 more horse power,...
than Red or Black 400EX's !!!

Below I have included,
many exerpt's, from past explainations,
of the disease your are now coming to terms with.

I hope you enjoy.
and Welcome to the forum.

Ride Hard, Ride Safe, and keep the Rubber Side Down.

P.S.,
(the NEXT thing you should consider,... to help PROMOTE the developement,... of your new Disease, Is a Quad for your WIFE !)

(Trust me,.... It helps ALOT, when you have to explain why you are now on a first name basis with the UPS and FedEx guys, and the people at PayPal start sending you "thank You" and Christmas cards !!!)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

lmao,
Now I've already tried to explain this disease to guys before.
it's called--
A.A.D.S.
( Accesory Aquisition Disorder Syndrome )

You are BORN with it.
There's nothing you can do about it.
(Trust me, I've been through the 12 step program,
and the weekly group support meetings)

It is TERMINAL !
There is NO CURE.
It controls everything you do.
The best way to deal with it is to simply accept it,
(The hardest part is getting your Wife to accept it)

Now go find peace in your soul,.....

(and Piece, after Piece, after PIECE, AFTER PIECE, for your Quad)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Group Support meetings are held the 6th Saturday of each month,
Welcome to the club.
We WILL NOT attempt to cure you,.......

As I said,.... This is a group S U P P O R T meeting !

---------------------------------------------------------------

I can't seem to remember all the parts Ive ordered in the last few weeks.
When someone says "hello, how ya doing today" I seem to always reply something like"Not bad my new bumper showed up" or "terrible, my nerfs are on backorder"
I wake in the middle of the nite to check eBay for new parts...any new parts.
I think about upgrading my upgrades even before they are delivered.
The UPS guy looks at me like Ive got rabies.
I'm tripping over packing peanuts in my hallway and in my yard.
OMG do ya think Ive got it??
No probably not, I can stop anytime I want to......BTW Does FedEX deliver on Sundays??

--------------------------------------------------------------------

....I've explained to you guys before about the A.A.D.S. disease, and it is not exclusive to quads. It can take over your entire life! on everything you touch! in everything you do!

But for those of you who may not realize what A.A.D.S. is, then I'll post it up again...

A.A.D.S.
( Accesory Aquisition Disorder Syndrome )
Definition-
The Overwhelming, Compulsive, Pathological, Psychotic all Consuming, inability to resist upgrading, modifying, improving, changing, altering, or perfecting, anything that you own, possess, aquire, or just happen to be standing next to.

"hello, my name is Ron,... and I am an Addict, I have A.A.D.S."

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Welcome to the forum, welcome to the disease, (it's called A.A.D.S.), and it IS terminal, with no known cure, (and if someone DOES come up with a cure, there are plenty of us here who will gladly kick his butt !

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not me, it's you,.... or more accurately,.... what's IN you. You are born with it. WE ALL are born with it. It's a disease. There is nothing you can do about it. It is terminal. there is NO CURE.
It is called A.A.D.S., surely you've seen me mention it to other members here.
It lays dormant while coarsing through your entire body, for YEARS. Then one day, something happens to awaken this beast, and it takes all controll away from your better judgement.

Sure you can try to fight it, but you WILL lose. You can try to supress it, but again, you will endup allowing it to build to such phenominal pressures that blood vessels will burst right through your skin, and your hair will erupt into flames!

It's best to just go with it, coddle it, nurture it, and learn to live peacefully in unison with it.
and whether you realize it or not,...
I'm figuring that you are about to have an Enormous, Historical, Record Setting, OUTBREAK, of Epic Purportions.
I'm invisioning you having an A.A.D.S. Attack that will make HISTORY!
Heck, you may even have an entire chapter, dedicated to you in the book!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

OH Trust me,....
I'm a Highly Trained Professional, with over 45 years experience in Detecting, Determining, and Identifying, this Disease.
You've GOT IT TOO !
It is Terminal, There is NO CURE.

it will not kill you,... but you Can, and May die from it,...
at the hands of your Wife!

We hold Group Support Meetings, on the 6th Sunday of each month. We WILL NOT attempt to cure you.
Like I said ,...
This is a SUPPORT meeting. we will encourage you to feed the symptoms.
It is the only way to maintain any level of sanity.

Denial of the Disease will only result in a dangerous overload of built up pressure, resulting in a fatal eruption of,

"Gee Honey, ... I just don't know how it happened,... but the bank account somehow got overdrawn".

(which usually results in the end of your own mortality)

Don't fight it.
you just cant win.
better and stronger men have tried and failed.

now repeat after me....
"My name is ----------, I am an addict, I have A.A.D.S."

Remember, We are here to help !

wow, talk about taking some time to write a post, geez oh man.

I need to correct some things though.

"go buy a honda service manual"

Don't do that! If you need a service manual, download it free, or get the disc on ebay for 4 bucks. They are too expensive to try to purchase, plus if you have a laptop or a computer with adobe acrobat reader, then it's actually easier to use because you can search instead of flipping through pages.
if you must buy one, then buy the clymer manual.

You for sure got the right quad if you're looking to modify it at all. There are all kinds of ad ons and accessories for this quad.

It's not a disease, most people don't have it, and please just don't waste your money on the dang disease.

You can ride trails on a stock 400ex all day long with plenty of power. If you're already looking for more, then you are probably riding straight shots that allow you to top the quad out. You probably feel like it should go faster top end.

If this is the case just stop right there and go buy a street bike haha. The quad is great for offroad riding, so if you're into the trails u don't need to go 80mph.

I've moved slowly on my EX. slip-on exhaust, air filter, and a dynojet kit is all i've bought in the first year. oh and some handlebars after i rolled it the first time.

So, try to limit the thing to what you really want to do to it. This way you can preserve the longevity and your wallet (you'll rarely get your money back from the mods when you go to resell). If you think you're getting serious and want to race go buy a 450, please don't do what some of these people do and spend 5 grand trying to make a 400ex go as fast as a 450 haha.

For a cushy ride get some 450r front shocks. The 400ex shocks are just fine for everything but big jumps

You can easily limit yourself to buying ridiculous accessories, just read around on here.

rev box and monster coils are a waste of time.

get a pipe or an air filter and let it rip for awhile, you will have plenty of power. these things wheelie like it's going out of style.

Silly question, how does Nerf bars, constitute a saftey type accessory? I really don't know. The only thing I've ordered so far is an engine hour/tachometer, only because I plan to do all my own maintaining. (I was a helicopter flight engineer in th Army, so I love to turn wrenches.) Now I'm just a lowly ER RN..... With an adrenaline addiction :)

Take it off a couple jumps and have your foot slip off the peg and run yourself over...you will then realize how important nerfs are. I know it sounds silly for your foot to slip off the pegs, but it happens, trust me. It really hurts running your own leg over, not to mention you look like a tard.

on the bright side he could go visit his friends at the clinic after he does that. LOL imo nerfs should be one of the first things done for safety. i dont like the stock guards so the nerfs with the longer rear are nice. I dont like the heal guards at all even mounted with nerfs but they are a nice feature. I ride too much sand and mud to have those on there too. my nets alone collect enough stuff at the end of a day of riding. lol steve

11-07-2010, 07:58 PM
Nerfs are a must have and of all things one of the things I shoulda done first. I had a set, it was junk but I shoulda kept them.

Today loading the quad into my truck using ramps (granted they should be about 2ft longer at least) I ran over my own foot!

dano104
11-08-2010, 08:44 PM
Wife gave me the go ahead for nerfs next month... I'm really drooling over some deals on 450r shocks on ebay, however I don't know how comfortable I am with grinding on a new frame, or messing with the structural integrity of something as important as a shock. Is there a way to mount them with less headache?

honda400ex2003
11-08-2010, 08:55 PM
you dont have to do any grinding with the r shocks. there is a tab for the fenders that you can tap off with a chisel and add a flat topped bolt from the bottom side through to the top to mount the brackets. they bolt right in after that. steve

CJM
11-08-2010, 09:10 PM
When i installed mine I cut a very small 1/8 piece off the lower half of the shock mount tab. Its soooo tiny but it clearances them so they fit in like a glove, and knocking the nut off is easy. Replace the plastics bolts with a carriage bolt and some nuts and your good to go.

One last question for the day. Which seems to be the best supplier to all of these addictive up-grades, in terms of cost and availability?

CJM
11-08-2010, 10:06 PM
I like (not these are all dot coms) rocky mtn atv, motosport.com and magic racing, dennis kirk, ebay, the message board here has a buy/sell forum, etc.

I find the best prices usually, never been burnt by any of those companies or anyone here too.

Your gonna want to put on nerf bars, do the suspension, an exhaust and have the carb jetted right for starters

trailrider894

Hello, and welcome to the addiction. After you have given your greating of " I am (insert your name here), and i have A.A.D.S. ", we will begin to bombard you with all the things we think you should do with your quad. Be aware though, just because one person has a certain opinion on a certain thing you should or shouldn't do, doesn't mean that individual is right or wrong. I suggest doing re-search about it, many people have asked the same question you are asking now. The search button located at the top of the screen under the main website banner is your new best friend. She will help you find nearly anything you will need help with. People like, CJM, Tri5ron, etc.... are the guys that basically own the forum, they are the modern day dictionaries of the 400ex.

I agree with what they say, 450r shocks will rock your world. Get a slip-on exhaust, there was a " Pipe-Shootout a while back that showed dynos of the 400ex with different exhaust on it. I am having trouble finding the link, but the White-Bro's E-Series Exhaust and CT Racing's exhausts created the most HP in the test. Doing this and re-jetting your carb with Dyno-Jet Jets, and there adjustable needle which is included in the kit, will help wake up your quad a little bit. Next thing to help you 400ex take in some air to help flow through your new exhaust, you need an air filter. This is where the debate starts, I along with several other people use K&N filters with and Outerwears Pre-Filter, this setup in my opinion flows better than the rest. Some people use foam filters such as No-Toil or UNI, claiming that the K&N lets to much fine particles like sand, dust, etc... through to the engine. I have not found this in my case, but to each his own. The Sparks Advanced Timing Key is also a good mod, which allows you to gain some power by advancing the weak stock engine timing. This is by far the best BANG for you buck on the 400ex. It can be purchased from the Curtis Sparks website, it is listed under electrical, not sure why?. If you do purchase this, there is a How-To Article listed in the Articles Section at the top of your page. I think this should give you something to do while riding, getting your nose down should be fun out on the trails. Well, class is starting, i hate this teacher... and College... If you need anymore info, just PM me or just reply. I check several times a day and usually reply in a timely manner.

nice! the glocks are ok for being light, imo that is about all they are good for. After shooting quite a few rounds through a buddies 40 cal glock and my 92fs i would take the 92 every time. much smoother gun imo and is a better shot in general. it seems like i couldnt hit the broad side of a barn with that glock nor could my buddy and he shoots his quite often. lol im heading to bed. steve

ha ha yeah my G22 isn't bad but not my favorite, the G22 seems to squeeze off more rounds, and faster than the 92FS, but the 92FS is my favorite!!

Haha an allowance, classic. You guys just gotta do what I did and marry a sugar mama lol. I havent had a "real job" in like 18 months now. My wife makes BANK and now pretty much all I do is buy blown up quads and mx bikes and either rebuild and sell or part them out. Best job ever and you can actually make pretty good money if you keep at it. It makes it much easier to occasionally sneak some parts in an order for one of my personal bikes lol.

p.s. Im a Springfield man myself, I love my XDM! but I also have a ruger p95 that I love cuz its cheap, accurate and never jams EVER.

So I'm a "Dictionary" too ???
OK,... but thats got waaayy too many syllables for me to handle, after a few beers.
Can anyone here please, think of a shortened version of the word, that might better describe me ?

RON!!! Holy man! I thought maybe you died!

I am def glad that i decided to get the comp and do a bit of late night reading again since i am still up.

You are freaking hilarious man! How is the video camera working for you anyway?

Enjoy reading the rest! We had some great discussions tonight! It was nice to actually have some fun on here for a change. We all had a great lumped together convo while having our own individual ones lol

entropy is what it was... Ill let you look that up, little physics term for you to read up on for a couple of seconds if you arent quite sure what it is.

PS heres a hint:

Entropy has often been loosely associated with the amount of order, disorder, and/or chaos in a thermodynamic system.

Similarly, the total amount of "order" in the system is given by:

Disorder= Cd/Ci

In which Cd is the "disorder" capacity of the system, which is the entropy of the parts contained in the permitted ensemble, Ci is the "information" capacity of the system, an expression similar to Shannon's channel capacity, and Co is the "order" capacity of the system.

Order=1-Co/Ci

Short terms: entropy =contolled chaos!

Man, Steve you really need to quit staying up so late playing Call of Duty :D

My dog was a better investment than anything I have. She likes to go hunting, fishing, 4-wheeler riding, and going for rides in the truck. Heck she doesn't even care what I spend my money on as long as I by her some dog food and a couple other goodies here and there. I don't have a wife to compare to, but I bet the dog would win.

I'm tired of the cold start blues...... Do you guys think it is beyond a newbies abilities to change carb jetting? Bike has maybe 4 hours on it, will I damage or jeopardize break in?

honda400ex2003
11-11-2010, 03:35 PM
nope, if you go with a 42 pilot jet you can add it and you wont even have to adjust anything else. just get the jet(series 26 works), take the bowl off, take the old one out, and put the new one in, install it again. you can probably do it without taking any of the fenders off it you are good but i suggest taking it all down the first time since you will probably have to tap on the phillips heads to get them to come loose for the frst time. steve

since "little man" is only 2 y.o., you might also also consider looking at an old honda trx70. Those do occaisionally pop up on CL, and are a great size for a little guy. Bullet proof too.
just a thought.

I realize that this one is not close to you, but it gives you an idea of the size of them...

Instead of spending 200 for a slip on exhaust, is there any performance improvement from just changing the outlet tip? They cost 70-75% less.

He'll ALWAYS steer you wrong, and you just can't trust him.

Of Course ! the shiny chrome $45 exhaust tip will improve performance.
(Honda was just trying to keep the secret all to themselfs)

As a matter of fact,...
It is at least equal to, and in some cases, even DOUBLE the performance improvements,
as,...

Monster Graphics,
Gripper seat covers,
Halogen headlight bulbs,
Mean Eyes electrical tape,
Billet fuel valve knobs,
Iridium goggle lenses,
Flouresent green mohawk helmet strips,
VP Fuel stickers,
race cut fenders,
shorty fuel cap vent tubes,
powder coated lug nuts,
and Spider grips !

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I have to get some more stickers from monster and NOS as a matter of fact. I might even mount a nos energy bottle up in front with a hose out the cap. that is sure to put me in at least the 60hp range alone. the stickers each add a bunch so ill be at 80 in no time. ;) ;) :p :p :p steve

I was just curious, they advertise a larger exhaust diameter, which i would belive to make the engine breath better, increasing performance. Just curious. :)
