So as some know, i got a 250r a while back, i finally got a bunch of stuff for it and will be starting to tinker tomorrow since i am home for the weekend.

My list of stuff i got the past few weeks:
dg nerfs
dg bumper
ASV levers
seat cover
stock exhaust
tool box

I will add some of this stuff to the machine tomorrow to see how it looks and then wait till I am home over break to tear it all down, clean everything, and paint or powder anything neccessary. I want to do all of the black stuff, the arms, and the axle to match the gold color of the oem colors. I want to find some red, black, or white fenders to match the oem look. Im not quite sure which. It also needs tires and rims that will probably be done this summer also. it already has my stock front tires and razr backs on it now from the 400ex.

Now onto the 400 :D I just picked up a spare cylinder and a 440 wiseco 11:1 so that will go in sometime also along with a top end tear down to replace the gaskets and inspect it all from the past 2 years. I cant wait to see how it runs with the stage 2 and the t-4 on it. lol I may even try to get it dynoed again this next summer just to see how it does there. It also needs some tires so those will either be here for xmas or next summer. stay tuned for pics of the 250r changes tomorrow.

for the 250r,...
Knowing your attention to detail, I'm sure that thing is going to look Sweet !
The only thing I can think of, that would make look better, would be if it was sitting UNDER ME !

for the Fo'hundy,...
You had damn well BETTER do a before and after dyno run,...
or your prowess, and manhood, will fall deeply into question.

If you DON'T do the runs,...
Then go ahead and order yourself a rainbow bumper sticker, and a Sierra Club tee shirt

how do you like THEM apples ? !

I wont be changing much more on it since i have all of the other stuff. I dont think ill be getting a a header for it since i want the low end of the stocker. Although, i am going to keep an eye out for a powerbomb header. steve

alright so i got a bit done today and probably wont get a whole lot of time to work on it now till winter break and next summer.

Just the tires:

Then i added the tool kit:
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/3844/img0864bn.th.jpg (http://img46.imageshack.us/i/img0864bn.jpg/)

Then i put the dg front bumper on:

http://img830.imageshack.us/img830/7635/img0861v.th.jpg (http://img830.imageshack.us/i/img0861v.jpg/)

Then the nerfs were put on and did a bit of armor alling to it:

I know that 250 hauls the mail nicely. lol Def a different animal than the 400. That pro circuit pipe really hits hard in the mid and top end. lol I didnt get to the levers today, i ran out of time.

Enjoy!!

i would have left that ac racing on the front of the r in my opinion it looks better, but each to his i guess

honda400ex2003
11-06-2010, 09:09 PM
i like the dg stuff i guess. I personally hate the ac one lol. i have never liked the ac equipment i guess. lol an added bonus is the dg stuff is cheaper cause there arent many people who like them. I may get an ims one or the flat top tag one some time but till then ill keep these on. Thanks for the compliments guys, I love doing stuff like this. steve

The lady i was hoping could do the seat for me cant... that sucks, got some front shocks, hopefully a carb, rear shock, and all the rear stuff i need then it will be done till summer! I cant stick any more money into it right now. lol This summer the rims and tires can come along with the fenders. then it will be as close to stock as i want to get it and have all 87 parts on it. :D Then it will just be the finishing touches with paint and powder possibly. :D steve

honda400ex2003
11-12-2010, 08:45 PM
got my new rear grab bar on tonight and got the tool kit all on it. I got all of the rest of the stuff out to the garage too. :D ill get some pics of everything completed tomorrow.

I am not sure if ill change the shocks to the blue ones or not since it has 400ex fronts on it now. lol I am really liking the all red theme it has going right now.

I may even get bold tomorrow and do a bit of trimming on the fenders to finish cleaning it up a bit more.

Then operation resto mod will be almost done. I will have almost all of the stock stuff that needs to go on it then. Just the rear end setup is left now. I am not sure if i wanna do that or not though since i have everything already for it. I would like to swap the 85 linkage though, that would be all it needs since the swingers are the same for it. Ill just leave that on there and make it the correct gold color. I will be doing the arms in the spring also with the gold. I may repowder the shock springs blue also when i get a different shock. my blown one is on ebay now so hopefully it goes for more than .01 lol i would like to get a few bucks out of it at least.

stay tuned for pics tomorrow. Dallas will be at the house to ride tomorrow also so we will have to take some pictures of riding too. steve

Out of the two,the r and the ex,which one bone stock is faster? I've wanted a 250r since I was a kid and I'm thinking of getting one when I'm finished modding the ex which seems like its been forever.I forgot to plant that money tree in the back yard the year before I started on the ex :blah:

honda400ex2003
11-16-2010, 02:29 PM
They are pretty much the same from the factory. the 250r is supposed to go around 69 while the old style 400ex goes right around 67-68 from the factory. It would really depend on who gets the holeshot to make a difference imo. I know with the pipe, reeds, and rad valve the 250 is still just as fast as my 416 is if not a bit faster up top. my 400 would get it out of the hole though. steve

i'll tell you right now, i have raced my uncles 87 250r with my 400ex many times.... got tired of loseing so many times i got my own 250r. (86 250r - pic below)
anyway i have raced my R vs my EX and my R vs my uncles R

well after quite a few races between quads the bottom line is this.... the 400 will pull the 250 until third gear. after that its over.
once that 250r hits it powerband - goodbye.

honda400ex2003
11-16-2010, 04:40 PM
after riding the 250r for a bit i feel the same way. 3rd gear is when the action happens! you better be holding on when you shift into 3rd, 4th, and 5th. lol cause it will put you on your butt off the back if you arent lol. steve

beags86
11-16-2010, 04:53 PM
i still want an update on yours, though.... my 250 was pretty well built, so it not really a fair race. but my uncles isn't. pipe, jetted, and air filter. but he would still whip me.

i really want to know how it turns out when you get your 440 kit in.....

honda400ex2003
11-16-2010, 04:57 PM
my 416 will def give it a run. they have have got to be both right around 34 hp. the r may have a bit less than that. It has the lid on with a uni or equivalent in it. my 416 has some nice top end too but keeps the low end with the stage 2 and the 450 carb. it will be a good race. steve

ridgeracer
11-16-2010, 09:38 PM
Really? so your 416 build will give a stock R a run for its money?

jcs003
11-17-2010, 01:29 AM
before i sold my 400ex i had, had friends of mine ride my 400 and vice-a-versa to see which is faster. my 250r would kill it from wire to wire.

my 400 was built by 4-stroke tech in 2000 and it had everything done to it you can think of in a 440 package. so its hard for me to believe a 400ex is getting the 250r up until 3rd gear. that 250r must need a rebuild or a different pipe. something doesnt seem right.

honda400ex2003

give me a break guys... Im not going to let this thread go any further. It is my restoration thread not a bash on which machine is faster thread. I really dont care which one is faster. If you read my previous one I said that most likely the r will walk. I hope my 400 is just as fast but like i said, the r is quick. / the idiotic comments from the peanut gallery about which one is faster.

steve

good call steve...at the end of the day the 250r is really a different aminal... my 250r was a fresh rebuild and was modded, but that doesn't mean that it going to be faster then every 400ex out there just because its a 250r... just saying you have to take in the fact of clutch wear, and gear where, where the rider is shifting, wheelies, blah blah blah... plus i never said the 400 would win til the shift into 4th... every quad is different. and on my 400 and 250 if you can keep the front end down on the 400 it would win 1st, be tied in 2nd, and lose in 3rd.

all in all your really have the best of both worlds with those machines, and they are for two different riding styles. in my opinion.

bump for later this week, i wont have to go searching for it. lol gonna have stock 87 shocks on it and a new stock carb on it for sure, along with new asv levers for both sides, and probably a new DID xring and JT sprockets later this week.

maybe new white maiers with a new red hood also, i probably wont put them on though. ill just leave them in the box till it gets warmer out. I would like to fix the red one where it melted through and use the full red setup since i like those alot too. they are also semi race cut so they dont flap too bad. they could use a bit more trimming so i will see how far i get this week on it.

I also have oil changes to do on the rancher, rincon, 300ex, 400ex, cbr, and rebel along with greasing up the skids on both sleds after my last ride tomorrow. oh almost forgot about the freaking swinger bearings on the 400... i try to forget about that dreaded chore. :(

gonna be a busy week for me. :D at least ill get them done for later though so i can ride when i take them back instead of having them tore apart working on them.

stay tuned for pics...

I got the newest version of the f3 pro perch on it. I think im gonna sell my full set off of my 400 if anyone is interested in them. they are like new, I just want to get the newest adjuster setup on that one also. let me know if you are interested in a red ASV pro perch.

Cr500 carb for the 250r???

honda400ex2003
03-09-2011, 04:42 PM
nope, just the stock one. i have a replacement one to put on it but if i can get it to stop leaking with the rebuild i got today ill be good to go.

also got some more new stuff today! I got my jt sprockets 13/39 DID x ring 104 or 105 link, got new throttle and clutch cables, new chain case guard, and the rebuild kit.

the rest will have to wait for a while i guess... :( it will get white maier fenders, a red maier hood, tag bars, and some black touch up painting on some of the stuff like the throttle block and the light mount. Iwill be cleaning up the swinger or getting an oem gold 87 one with a carrier and painting the steering stem black after i get the powder coat off of it. It is going to get razrs also and either some .125 douglas rims or my douglas quadroks from my 400 and ill get something different for the 400. im not sure what i will do with it yet.

i have some new bearings to get in the 400 also for the steering stem and the swingarm. I got those today too but they will have to wait till it gets warmer outside. I might be able to get the chain and sprockets done this week though. ill see how the day goes tomorrow. I didnt get all of my homework done today so tomorrow ill be working on it again. i dont have too much to do but have enough to keep my busy for at least few hours again.

ill take pics tomorrow also.

Good thing about the R is that you can mod it as you progress on it to suit your needs. They just have so much potential!

So i got everything maintenance wise done to the r today for a while.

Chain, sprockets, rear brake pads

I didnt get the cables done, maybe tomorrow if i decide to go out and wrench for a while again. I have my carb rebuild kit to put in also or i will be swapping out the one thats on there with a new one that i have in the garage if it keeps leaking. I also have the skid plate to put on it too still.

Pics of the levers, shocks, chain, and sprockets :D

yup we still have snow, we got got 7" in the past few days here and up in houghton. probably not as much up in houghton, i think they got about 4" or so up that far.

thanks for the compliments. It is coming along nicely. next are fenders, seat cover, and tires and i will be all done. Im going to keep the original powder coat and paint on the frame and arms i think. I might touch up the arms a bit but only if i can find a matching gold for it. I have to do the swinger also and get some new paint on that too along with the steering stem. I have to wait for it to get warmer though before i can mess with that stuff.

thanks bro, maybe we can go for a ride this spring when the trails open up.

painting will probably be done in a paint booth when i do it with a spray gun and base coat-clear coat stuff. it depends on what i want to paint. lol that wont be till later this summer though. i have it ready to ride now for the most part, just the front brakes and i can get it registered for riding on the trails this summer. I could reg it now but havent had time to take everything to the dmv to get it switched to my name. lol

I got the carb all rebuilt with new stuff tonight on the r and got that all ready to go. even changed the spark plug after i fouled it up changing carbs and such.

got it all dialed in and wow the thing was ripping after i got done. man that thing drinks some 93 octane WOW.

changed the exhaust on the 400 back to the t-4 again to let it breathe a bit better up top.

tomorrow afternoon will probably entail tearing the back end of the 400 apart to get the swingarm bearings. thats gonna be a project.

ill be getting some new razrs in the next week or two also. :D it will be a while before i get anything major for either of them.

what a complete opposite machine these 2 are. one hits low, other high. crazy stuff when you hop on and off of them quickly, it can catch you off guard pretty fast.

:D my 400 is just about where i want it really. maybe some arms, an axle, and some elkas.

lol i have the 440 kit ready to go, just gotta get the extra cylinder i have bored and get some new studs for it. then if i get bored i can drop that in there too.

honda400ex2003

that only took me a couple of hours, taking my time. lol its been apart so many times it is ridiculous really. it gets torn down like that once a year at least to that point pretty much. I havent had the shock out before on it so thats the newest thing to come off. ive had other 400ex ones off but not mine.

:D 3 years ago the top end came off of it and it got the 416 in it. it has treated me very very well. I have well into 2000 or 3000 miles on the top end with im betting around 7-8 thousand on the rest of the machine.

Ive really only had to do rear axle bearings in it every couple of years. I havent touched any other ones on it yet. it needs the front swingarm bearings done now for sure, they wiggle bad. I have my front hub bearings and the steering stem ones but i dont really want to take the hubs off and such if the bearings are good still. imo you cant beat the original seals and such on them. once they are disturbed they go much faster.

ill see what happens tomorrow with it. i probably wont get too much time to work on it tomorrow since i have a few places to go to look for a job for the summer. im hoping to find an internship but if not, ill start working at my back up on monday next week. :D

after much deliberation, the 440 is going in i think. ill get an oem piston and cylinder over the winter and drop in mine next year. hopefully next year ill have another one to put my aftermarket parts on, then this one is going rogue and back to oem dare i say it. lol

then the r and the ex will both be back to where they started life~oem. :D

oh the dreams i have. full time job, nice garage and some tools to work on stuff. they will all be a reality next year sometime.

lol 3 days a week will be nice for relaxing, bad for money making lol. ill see how the job search goes tomorrow. i will be making some calls on a couple of internships and a local mill is having a hire day for summer help so ill be heading there too in hopes of a job.

i know i need the relaxation time, its been 7 days already and im still buzzing lol. cant imagine doing this crap every day... gonna be a long 40 years. :ermm: :ermm:

the hundy will come apart on wednesday most likely and be apart for the weekend. hopefully i can get the cylinder done and back by midweek next week. I decided to just use the one out of my machine instead of getting studs and such for the other one. it is already a 440 anyway so im not sure if they could use the sleeve that i have for it or not. I wish i would have known that it was bored out from the ebay listing. :( i got screwed quite a bit on parts over the winter. I was supposed to get a carb that was the same as the current one on my r, it isnt. got a cylinder that doesnt have any studs in it and is already a 440...

oh well, live and learn. ill take it to my machinist and see what he thinks about it before i do anything with my new one though. he might have some hd studs or something he can put in it and be able to hone it slightly and run my 440 piston i have. that would be ideal but my luck isnt that good. lol

well a bit of an update...

got the swinger bearings done today. what a chore that was. i have about 9 hours total in tear down, cut, and rebuild but i guess it was worth it to finally have it all set again. tomorrow will be the steering stem lower bearing and possibly the front hubs. ill take a look at them when i do the brakes on the fronts.

that things not gonna know what to do with itself after having new bearings in it and a fresh rebuild in it. it will be ready to go for a long time again. :D needs some new rubber on it next week and it will be good to go. :D

the r will be done i think too over the summer, that just needs the white fenders and new rubber. ill see how much the track and stuff come to for the sled.

finally got all the front hubs done and the steering stem bearings done! just have the a arm bearings to do now and it will be all finished up, every bearing will be done on it after i get done next week. I have to order all of the stuff for that monday along with the stuff for the sleds. :D steve

I cant believe how expensive rebuilds are for arms. 160 bucks for all of the stuff to do them from picot works. :(

i have a few things to get still for it and it will be good to go for the summer. I think im gonna have to scrap the 440 build for a while now that i have to get more bearings and a new helmet. :(

i noticed mine is more cracked on the visor than i thought so its time to replace it rather than just getting a new visor for it. it took a decent hit this fall so im not risking using it any more. im getting some new goggles too but just some cheaper ones with quick straps.

it never ends... just when you think its done, something else comes up. lol

i got the header off, the stock flywheel key back in, checked the clutch over, and checked the inner oil screen also today. the head might come off in a bit, im not sure though. it will most likely come off tonight so it can go to the machine shop tomorrow. :D

heres the tear down. for 3 years on that piston it looks excellent.

new 440 left - 416 right and a bit closer lol.

got it tore down with one hitch. the lower tensioner bolt decided it was on tighter than the head would allow for. lol did a bit of grinding to cut through the tensioner and turned it off with a vice grip with no problem after trying the notch trick and a couple of different sockets on it. I was planning on getting a new one anyway so i guess its not a big deal. lol Ill have some more later of the bearings and such.

lol was wondering what happened to you. i figured you havent got it hooked up again yet. ill be waiting.

I got my tires today along with the rest of the bearings. I have my tensioner coming along with my sliders also, they should be here on thursday. I think im gonna start working tomorrow so i probably wont make any more major progress on it till the weekend. I have some other stuff to wrap up on the rincon and the sleds first too.

I have a ball joint to do on the rincon :( i have to finish up the clutches on the 700 since i finally got those apart to clean them. I finished the slides on the sleds today and got the clutches back on the 800.

progress is being made slowly but surely. I cant wait to get it all done again. Im glad i did the sleds last year pretty much, I didnt really have much to do on them this year as a result.

no pics today, i was too busy and my hands were too dirty to get my phone and start messing with it.

wow, im finally back. internet was out due to an old modem that is black listed to be replaced. we also had a storm come through and lightning hit a fiber optic or something and caused some issues. :(

im getting a new one in a bit but i finally got a bit of internet coming through so i figureed i would get on and check everything out quick.

I got all of the bearings done in the 400 :D a arms, swinger, front hubs, steering stem.

I have a new chain slider and roller coming today to add to it.

the new tires are waiting to be put on probably next week so that will be nice.

hopefully the 440 will be done today but that will probably be next week too.

After that all will be done for the summer.

On a side note: you are now talking to the new mechanical engineering intern for Superior Diesel :D WHOOT WHOOT!!!!!!!! Im pretty excited about that!

the 440 will be done on monday weather permitting or at least garage space permitting. lol  cant wait to see how it runs after some break in rides. my parts will ne in for the tensioner and such at 3 so i will get them picked up and get them on. I should be able to get it all back together before that though and just put the tensioner in after i get the rest ready to go.

starting jetting 182, 52 pilot, 3 turns out, 3rd notch. i dont have anything bigger on hand but that should get me pretty close. I have a 180 and a 178 also so i am hoping im a bit on the rich side with the 182 for break in and then i can go down to the 180 after that. I might end up at a 54 pilot but i am hoping not.

3-5 rounds of 15 minute varying speeds on an mx style riding pattern to get it broke in nicely.

i even have a flywheel getting cut to see how it runs with that in it along with the stock key. I think it will rev out nicely along with having very good low end. I will try it out with the stocker first though for some nice comparisons to the 416 i had.

just an update :D maybe if im bored tomorrow i will get started on the top end. shouldnt take too long to get it back together.

I would assume that it will be around 37-39 hp at the wheels.

on the other hand... the rincon is screwed now. lol have to get the manual to see how to adjust the valves on it. :( must be out of time somehow. all i did was unbolt the cam chain tensioner and put a new one on. it must be way out of adjustment. guess that will be tonights project.

Steve, your quad has joined the dark side, the force is growing stronger in you, your jedi training is almost complete....lol..jk.

It will be interesting to see what the difference is in jett sizes from the 416 to the 440, you should do a whole thread based on the performance difference between the 416 and 440? You may have already said that, I didnt read through all 10 pages.

You should get the dyno #s on that 440 ASAP!!! Then compare the gains to your 416 dyno run, and see were on the graph the most change occured, that would be like the best info this site ever seen...lol.

lol sooner or later it will get dynoed. it will cost me another 100 to get it done and I cant afford it right now.

first thoughts on the 440 -it is running rich on the main right now so it is a bit doggy up top.

low end is phenomenal compared to the 416, even with only riding it 2x now.

it hits low and pulls hard even with the rich main. I will probably go down to the 180 later tonight and see how it does.

ah back the garage to finish up the rincon. at least i got it running, just have to verify the adjustments one more time then put it back together.

i think i got the piston, gaskets, and the sleeve on ebay. I used my stock cylinder to have the sleeve put in it. I still have a spare one but it already has a 440 in it and didnt have any studs in it.

so far it hasnt been bad. 210 was the max i saw yesterday with some hard riding mx style stuff. revving high and such. ill probably throw the 180 in there in a bit and see how it runs with that. ill report back my findings.

got the rincon back in time again and its running great.

ill have most of the projects finished just in time to go to work and relax. lol

well now that i have it all jetted and ready to rock ill give my thoughts on the overall setup compared to my 416.

416 was 34.2 hp
10:1 416 wiseco
stage 2
port and polish
t-4 slip on
3 degree key

440
11:1 wiseco
stock key
stage 2
port and polish
t-4 slip on

I basically bolted the 440 in it and put it back together with the same stuff.

jetting on the 416
168 main
3rd notch
52 pilot
f/a 3 turns out

jetting for the 440 final
182 main
3rd notch
52 pilot
f/a 3.5 turns out

im waiting on a new 180 to try, the 178 was too lean. it runs great with the 182 in it but want to see how the plug looks with the 180. I broke the one that i had trying to put it in, so now i have to wait. my thoughts are that it will be too lean for anything under 70 degrees. I ran the 178 at 70 today and had a pretty lean white plug.

1st low end- much better with the 440 than it was with the 416 that was the nature of the stage 2 and 10:1 though, it is still better than the 10:1 stage 1 too but is similar in lower aspect of it.

mid range- pulls hard and better than the 416

top end comparable to the 416 but still pulls harder in my opinion. I cant wait to get it out on a gravel road to gps it a bit and dyno it soon. my arms are sore so it has to be faster and pull harder lol. it will run right next to the r up top now and probably run ahead of it getting there with the low end (if you can keep the tires down on the ground).

my 416 had almost 2 years on it when i dynoed it with probably 1500 miles on it. after the last long trip i took this past fall that was almost 300 miles in 2 days that were pretty hard miles, I felt the 416 felt like it was getting a bit tired and started to smell of oil once in a while. it wasnt burning enough to notice on the stick but i could smell it every now and again.
overall so far~ im loving the 440, it is a great setup for something with more power over the 416. if i had another stock machine i wanted to do something to, it would be a 416 again with either a stage 1 or 2 in it for something to keep my happy all the time again. the 440 would do it but now i am maxed out on the cylinder i have. thats the main reason i would go with the 416 again. it is a bit less power but still plenty capable of running with and ahead of 450s. i think the 440 would def be giving 450s a beating now. at least the ones i have ridden, theres always a faster machine out there. im not out to be the fastest but it is nice to make it somewhere first when your buddies start to get a bit cocky. it just keeps them in check, thats all i like the power for. it also reminds them that i will always rip harder and faster than them no matter what they think. lol

I hope you enjoyed the writeup. Now onto the 250r sometime soon. stay tuned for more from that machine. it will be getting fenders, tires, gold painted swinger and arms, and the steering stem painted black again to finish off the restoration.

As usual, and with no surprise,
a very nice and informative write-up Steve.
You never let us down.

I'm looking forward to trying the stage 1 for my "stocker", with the +6 key, 450r carb, Uni, and full Big Gun system.

Maybe someday in the future, I'll go to the 416 @10+ish:1, but I'm pretty sure adding the stage 1 to my existing set-up will make me quite happy. We'll see.

Remember, I'm the guy who just can't bring myself to give up any of the "Near Bullet Proof" reliability.

Looking forward to seeing what your Dyno numbers come back with for the 440.
Are you going to do a comparative run beween the 400EX carb, and the 450r carb ?
That would be interesting to see, and would be kind of neat to add to the carb Shootout thread.

lol thanks for the compliment! I cant wait to see how you like the stage 1. im intrigued to find out your thoughts on it.

i think that my setup will be just as reliable as my others. I hope im not proven wrong.

my buddy, after riding it, said wow it has alot more low end but it seems like it takes a bit longer to get up top after riding it through the woods, he said he didnt get out of third gear since it is quite tight in there. he couldnt believe it wheelied so easy in 3rd gear.

I can wheelie in any gear at pretty much any speed.

I think that after i go back in on the f/a a bit tomorrow it will be perfect for me. i think that it is a bit rich still after smelling it a bit tonight but that should be perfect with about a 1/4 turn back in on the f/a. it will crisp it up a bit more.

I dont think ill be able to do a side by side test between the two. the dyno (if they still run it) is 100 an hour and 50 to set it up so it is quite expensive. thats what it was when i ran on it last time anyway. Im not even sure if ill be able to make it down for a while, i cant take any time off during the week since i will be working full time. so that means it might be august before i can make it down there to do it. possibly later this week but its doubtful at best to make it down there so soon.

It doesnt look like im going to be able to get the flywheel cut this week. ill have to take it to a machine shop and have them do it instead of having it done by my friend at school. his metals teacher is putting it off and wont do it for me. oh well.

It would be really awesome with that in it, an even faster revving machine would be fun without losing the low power on it.

we will be running both the r and the ex head to head tomorrow for the first time.

I'm on my last bore, and with all of the negative feedback the 440's get, I was kind of worried I'd have to buy a stock-ish cylinder and loose power on the next top end rebuild..

I'll be keeping an eye on this thread to see how reliable it'll be for you..

thanks for the good info and great detail Steve.

440 ate up the r today. though in the r's defense it was a bit under the weather. seemed to be fouled up a bit so i came home and changed the plug but didnt take it for a ride again after that. the 440 pulled ahead right off the line and held its own the whole time walking away as far as we could go. this was probably 500-600 feet or so. more tests will come in the future to verify the results. the r is still super quick up top, the ex feels sneaky quick. it catches you off guard and will bite if you are not watching. the r sneaks up on you a bit higher in the rpm range. lol

anyone have an aftermarket header they want to get rid of cheap? might want to add one on the 440 for the summer. i think that would really help out the top end on it even more.

pm me if you have one that will fit a slip on. fmf, pro circuit, maybe a yosh one would work, and maybe a couple of others would be fine.

it looks like ill be going back to the 182 main, the 180 was a bit lean. though fun riding on the edge, it was too close for me lol.

182 will be reassurance.

so the final jetting on the big gas sucker:

182
3rd notch
50
3.25 turns out

450r carb, regular needle, 91 octane gasoline, no ethanol, stock key

i got the new skins on last night too :D braap the 400ex is finally completed for the summer.

This is a great thread with awesome write up's!!!

Hey, it's gonna be pretty cool to play with the sproket's now and see what kinda top end speed this beast will have?

Id like to see you try a 16/39 or 16/36 and get a gps speed on it, you deffinetly got the extra HP to pull the gearing now.

honda400ex2003
05-22-2011, 05:44 PM
ill probably be switching to 16/38 this week to mess with it for a while. it is insane with the 15/38 in it now.

I am hoping to get my flywheel cut this week too and mess with that in the coming days. if not, though, im not real worried about it. my other thing to get is a header this summer either used or new one.

the trails opened today so ill be riding later this week most likely or next week. Ill be out of town over memorial day so i wont be doing anything with it then.

ill def take the gps out to the gravel roads and see how it runs speed wise.

do you run your 13/39 with 22s?

steve

Yeah I have 13/39 gearing now and I use either 22in duro's or 21in skat trak's. I do throw on the 20in razr's when riding around my area, its pretty short gearing wise with the 20's on there but it has nice power.

Ive been thinking of switching it back to 14t or 15t lately to accomadate for the swing arm, I gotta get some track time in to find out.

honda400ex2003
05-22-2011, 08:46 PM
thanks john,

ill report my findings on my 16/38 setup next week. i have to go to gander mountain tomorrow night which is an hour each way so it will be dark by the time i get home. tuesday we are cooking out so i may be able to get it setup then but doubtful, and wednesday ill be packing for our fishing trip. i have to go to gander to get a new rain gear set for fishing later this week. lol we are heading to the lake of the woods so ill be gone till monday -memorial day.

cant wait to see what it runs with that, im willing to bet that it will be upwards of high 70s at least.

I tried 16/39, wanted it so bad but when I put my chain on it was only setup for a 15/39-aint long enough.

Coincidentally 15/37 will produce almost exact same thing as 16/39. 37t is harder find tho.

it freaking pulls my 250r now, easily after multiple tests last night. lol i cant imagine a 16 on there. it will be time to do some experimenting with it after i see how i like it on the trails. the 16 might make for nice cruising speeds and still have plenty of low end.

ordered the white fenders with the red hood tonight :D

picked up a new hjc helmet and goggles too

I will be getting the swinger off later this week to clean it up and paint it up a bit and will think about the arms.

I have to do the steering stem too in black and want to do the foot levers for the brake and shifter black again with the foot pegs too i think to get them touched up.

I got the seat off tonight to get that re-upholstered later this week.

Now i just have to find someone that makes stock graphics for an 87 and get my seat graphics all done to say honda and sportrax on the back and sides.

:D whoot should be fun this weekend if its nice outside or later this week while i pull it all apart.

i might even keep the red fenders on there after getting the red cover back on and the rest of it all set how i want it. its too bad that there is a burn on the one side, i may have to trim it out a bit and clean it up by the exhaust to get it all set with the red. im afraid that maier will quit making the white or at least dk will quit carrying it in the near future, it has gone on clearance and i dont think i can even find the right number from the site any more. I have had the one that i used for quite some time. lol I might just keep the full set new in the box and run the red. ill see how i like it when i get it all finished up.

little update on the r finally!

got the front fenders on

the seat is getting upholstered again and will be done mid week then the rear fenders will be able to go on

i got the stuff off to paint later this week when the weather is nice. ill take some pics of it when i do them.

I havent found any gold paint yet to do the swinger but i will probably get some later this week. I havent got that off yet so im not real worried about the paint.

heres the pics from today with the rims and tires off the 400 on it. I put the stock rims back on the 400 so i can run the roads and stuff while riding around the house. we have the roads open from the house which is great for getting the trails but tough on the tires.

I polished up all of the aluminum and pipe on the r too, i think it looks freaking awesome with the red and white fenders on it!

I polished the rims on the 400 to try to get some of the corrosion off, they came out pretty nice for the little bit of time i spent on them.

enjoy!

the seat will be back this week so i will take some pics of the r when it is all done later. I laid the rear fender on it tonight and couldnt believe how nice it looked.

the last thing is the swinger but im not worried about that. I havent got the gold yet and want to try to find some that is the actual color code.

Enjoy!! I know i am, i love the look of it! I was really planning to get it sprayed with the white graphics on the seat but i really like the clean red look on it right now. I also put some armor all on it but i could get that off if i want to spray it.

i have some pics of both the 400 and the r together but they are still uploading.

thanks man! I appreciate it. I have put alot of time into these things this summer. this was unexpected since i didnt plan to do anything to them in the first place. lol

I also like the clean look alot. I think i am going to keep it that way instead of doing graphics on it.

your very welcome man. yeah it definitely shows that you have a lot of time tied up in both quads, it looks like you have put quite a bit of attention to detail on them and they look awesome.
i agree 100% on leaving the graphics off because i think the way it looks now it just makes the cleanliness and shininess of the white and red just stand out that much more!

How does the 440 compare to when you had the 416 on it? I'm kinda in between doing a 416 and the 440and cant decide which way i want to go.Thanks!

double d, i should be around. give me a call if you want to ride.

rio,
I think the 440 is quite a bit different than the 416 and is quite a bit more powerful than my 10:1 or even an 11:1 416 when set up the same. If i was going to do it again, i would do it the same way. 416 first then see how it goes from there. a 416 will keep you very very happy for a long time! I almost did another one instead of the 440 but figured i would go all the way to see how it runs.

for the full break down check back a few pages comparing the two pretty in depth. thanks for the compliments!

Im thinking next time I do a topend when its shot Im doing a 426. The 440 is nice, dont get me wrong-but I would like to keep the heat down due to the temps I ride in-just doesnt sit well for me really. With the 440 sleeve you just lose so much cyl wall and the heat can build up dependingon riding style, and areas/temps you ride in. Mine gets hot to a degree, but nothing like some others Ive ridden. I am glad its working for you steve, those temps better stay down!

I will say that my 416 makes me happy, never had an issue really and once I finally get off my duff and order the 450r carb parts and get it on I think Ill be smiling even more. I personally like the way the quad pulls, it has nice lowend torque and power all around-in a race a 450 would still win by a bit but its not alot. I sure dont have any issues keeping up on the trails.

I think what really helps is gasket thickness to get true compression (or as close as possible) b/c the cometic gaskets are .027 and the stockers or most others are much thicker and kill the compression.

Least thats my thoughts..

it runs 20-30 degrees less than my 416 consistently which is much better than i thought it would be. for every 3 degrees of advance i saw about 5-10 degrees depending on the day.

i havent ran over 210 yet with my 440 and hardly ever ran less than that with my 416.

just my thoughts on it also. :D

bump for my new esr shifter and esr brake lever for the hundy! i have to get a bumper still and ill be good to go again after my little spill. i got my tie rod on last night and got the rim back on again.

i got to ride my 400 for the first time in 5.5 weeks, it was definitely a nice deal to finally rip on it again.

ill take some pics after i get my levers on.

im even going to be getting an old honda 70cc dirtbike tonight or tomorrow most likely. i think it is an early 70's model but not real sure. it needs a bit of cleaning up and such since it hasnt ran in a long time. ill get pics of that too if i can get it before the guy goes back home for the week.

Would that be a CT70 ?

Those are pretty cool, and quite the collectors bikes in this part of the country. I've had 3 of them over the years. (as well as a few trail 50's too).

A fully complete CT70, running, and in need of restoration, will still command $600 - $1000.
and fully resto'd CT70 can bring$1200 to $1600.

I have also had about 12 or 13 CT90 / 110's. (I used to flip them). I still have a '78 CT90 in very clean, not quite mint condition. w/rifle rack, scabbard, rear saddle bags, aux fuel tank, The Works !

I do still ride it around town, and take it when we go camping. Starts first kick every time ! great little trail bike, and a cool way to hit the creeks and streams for a little fishing.

The last one I sold, was a 1980 CT110, ( the least desireable year, because it did not have the dual range transmission). It was almost,... but not quite as clean,... as the one I still have. (and it sold for for $1600).

Great bikes, and even more bullet-proof than our 400's.

Looks dang good Steve, how on earth did you keep your plastics so nice tho? No matter what i do mine get beat.

honda400ex2003
03-23-2012, 08:29 PM
lol yup your old one

I just dont get them scratched, i keep everything away from them, dont touch them or wipe any sand off of them without washing, and generally take care of them.

I use poly protectant on them or armor all on them to store them for the winter and occasionally through the summer after a good wash. that shine is the leftover from fall but they stay pretty clean all the time.

it helps to have a good cleaner too, it keeps them from getting discolored from mud. i use super clean on them or a similar cleaner.

lol, try not to go through too much brush with them i suppose is the key.

steve

CJM
03-23-2012, 08:41 PM
Yea thats kinda hard for me, too much brush I guess. I wish it was easier to sand them and polish them back up.

Im not to worried honestly its just plastic and I can always get new ones. Now the gfx, those I might have to have custom made cause I cant find mine anymore.

just ordered my new pro circuit header, Front and rear razrs 20s and 22s, GP T-9 Pro Series wheels, Black Trail Series Nerf Bars.

cant wait to start working on the 400 again. :)

have to put the axle in it, ill do the rear carrier bearings while i do that, change the tires, put the exhaust on, do a bit of jetting, and enjoy the summer on it.

the r is all done and wont be getting anything this summer.

have to do the front arm bearings on the rincon too :( i did the rears last fall so it will be nice to have all of those done again.

ill definitely have to do some jetting with it. i took it for a ride tonight to warm it up and see how it ran. needless to say, it ran great till it warmed up lol, then it was stuttering a bit. ill probably go 187 or 190 to see how it runs with that. probably the 190 first then go to a 187 if i need to. i might even get a 192 and 195 to see how they run if needed. ill see what the dealer has in stock and go from there. it never hurts to have more jets that are bigger for something in the future maybe.

rerouted my stock cable also, this way worked out really well. thats how i had my magura ran also when i had that. there was no way it was going to work going through the pipe, i started it up to check everything and it was already melting on the pipe.

im running out of stuff to do though lol. i pretty much have everything but a stroker and bigger valves.

axle might be on wednesday, ill see how the weather is. thats an outside driveway type of project.

changed my light bulbs again tonight too, just put stockers back in it since i dont ride much at night. both of them were toast so it was time to do them.

i picking up a different sled tomorrow so i probably wont do much on the atvs.

the list is short and filled with stuff i really dont want to get haha

arms
swinger
stem

thats really about all i have left to get, i cant believe it. i dont think ill buy a swinger or stem thats for sure. maybe some arms sometime with elkas. i want to get some housers in +1 or +2 to match the axle.

the nerfs should be in soon so those will go on also. ill post a pic of that when i get them on. i havent seen any pics of the moose ones around here yet so it will be good to get them around.

other than that, the list is too short for what i want to do to it. time to retire the mod thread again for a while. :(

one more addition:

ill have a pic of my nerfs tomorrow but ill give my first impression now.

the finish on them is really nice with the black. it matches to front bumper nice and they look good.

the problems: a bit small in back of the pegs

fit is not really that nice, they bolt onto the frame at the rear lower arm mounting bolt and at the pegs. drilling the pegs is required, i wasnt really impressed with that at all. actually quite irritated. im sure that alot of them do get drilled, i just didnt want to drill mine.

im used to having them on and off in less than 5 minutes for quick changes and getting to things easily. so drilling them and having the nets around the bottom frame rail doesnt really sit well with me.

i liked the dg setup with the frame mount plate between the peg and the frame. it was a solid mounting place and gave a nice place to stand on the back tube. there is no extra room on these to stand up. I had extra extensions built into the front of my pegs, thank god i had my stock ones still so that i could drill the holes out and put the plate in. my extensions were 1/2" in front and the bolts wouldnt have went through properly with them on. that was my fault though so i cant blame moose there.

the nets arent too bad except for the frame mounts. it will be nice for protection though thats for sure.

overall- im not a fan of drilling and stuff for a bolt on part so im not real impressed there.

i do like the quality of them though and how they match the rest of the black on my machine now.

:D I love the look of the black on there thats for sure!

put the 450r shocks back on tonight too. figured i might as well put them back on since i cant sell them.

steve
