I have a guy that want to trade a 97 500R bike for my 89 250r. I was just wondering what people thought of this trade? Can anyone tell me what the power of a 500R is like? By way he says the engine was just rebuilt with new crank and piston.

Looks like a decent bike- fast! However, I hate riding bikes compared to quads, especially in sandy/loose dirt, so that is up to you.

Keep your 250, CR's are a dime a dozen. Or trade him something else for it.

Bone stock engine will push around 55~60hp, and obviously a much lighter chassis than a quad. They aren't big screamers, the horspower peak is around 6k rpm, and by 8k they're done producing power. They almost sound like a 4-stroke.

However, this is on a stock motor. Like any 2-stroke, porting and other mods will push the horsepower. 75+ is easily possible.

And much like a 250r, the CR500 is an old engine design, much longer stroke back in the day than many of todays 4-stroke motors (the CR500 is a 79mm stroke, a YZ450F is a 60.8mm stroke). This longer stroke actually creates the OPPOSITE of what people generally think of 2-strokes vs 4-strokes. The CR500 is pushing close to 50ft-lbs of torque, peaking at 6k rpm. A modern 450 uses a much shorter stroke to achieve high RPMs and high horsepower, a YZ450F is pushing about 32ft-lbs of torque, and peaking at about 8k rpms.

I I read on a 500 forum that therse motors are pretty much bullet proof. How truthful is this?

They are pretty tough motors and dont usually just blow for no reason. As wilkin said that bike made around 58hp stock. If this is your first bike I wouldnt recommend it. It can spit you on your *** in just about any gear if you dont know how to ride it. Also, depending on your area thats not that good of a trade. Here in AZ that cr500 is about a $1500 bike if it runs good while a good running 89 250r is about $2300 when stock, any aftermarket parts will put it in the $2800+ range. I personally would ask for $500 cash on top of the trade.

Well my motor is after market esr 310 and bottom end was all re done but needs odd and end things like wheel bearings and rear caliper rebuilt. But besides this bike I'm not getting and offers over a thousand. And this wouldn't be my first bike.

dang, wish I lived in ohio, id make you an offer lol. Well get the 500 then. Its a super fun bike if you know how to ride bikes. Once you get it play around on it and then start lookin for a crf rolling chassis to modify and throw that cr500 motor in!

Why would you put the 500 in a crf chassis?

because that makes it a cr500AF, just about the most bad *** bike in the world. Service honda produces them and i believe they just modify a crf250r chassis and put it in. Plus, you can find a rolling chassis for around $600 usually and put an extra $500 or so into the fabrication and in the end you have a bike worth about $5,000. they sell for like $10,500 new.

But what's the advantage of switching chassis?

Despite saving about 20lbs with the aluminum frame, the suspension, ergonomics and all around moderness of the crf chassis compared to the old steel chassis is night and day.
