Head pipe paint question

so last spring i painted my 400ex's head pipe Red with High temp. paint that costs like 12-15 dollars a can, its not generic stuff either, and i spent alot of time preping and such and then when it gets dried and i put it on and start my quad and the paint burns and flakes of where the pipes bend coming out the head. so i wanted to know if anybody else has experienced this problem, or did i do something wrong????

Painting headers isnt my cup of tea, but chances are it is flexing and causing the paint to break up and flake off. Grab your tailpipe and move it up and down, see if the header flexes a little bit. I have actually bent a header before and cracked a header, due to loose exhaust bolts, with loose bolts it relys on the 2 header nuts to support the full weight of the exhaust on most quads.

no buddy its all tight. once i started it just burnt, turned black, and fell off? i used good quality high temperature paint, i just dont know what happened lol

I painted my exhaust a long time ago on a 250X, no problems at all. I sold the quad a little over a year later, so I couldn't tell you if it's still good or not, but it held up great for that year. And it was cheap stuff, too, regular off-the-shelf exhaust spray paint.

It was black, so I couldn't tell if it burnt or not, but I don't think so.

My first question is, was it just regular "High Temp" paint, or was it specifically exhaust paint? High temp paint, I think, is rated for like 500 degrees Fahrenheit, while exhaust paint is rated for 1200 degrees F. High temp is fine for engines, but it won't withstand exhaust temperatures.

i believe it might have been krylon? that was rated at 5000 degrees

I had the same problem with the headers on my car.

was it ceramic they say to use ceramic paint.

Ceramic paint inside a chrome 2 stroke pipe will prevent blueing

i have never painted exhaust on my quads but I have painted the cylinder head before. Granted it doesnt get as hot but it held up great. I always user DEI exhaust wrap instead, I really like the way it looks and it works great. Drops the temp.

Bottom line, NO paint is going to stick to the header pipe. I do not even know how they can market it. It is a joke. Only thing that will hold up is going to be powder or JET HOT...

I am going to start trying the powder coating. I just found a guy near by that will do things reasonable.

I Painted my exhaust on my 300ex yesterday black. I rode all day smoked for a little bit but held up fine and didnt chip at all i hope it'll stay on there for a while. I sanded it pretty good with 220 sandpaper and just kinda powdered it on, one thing you cant do is spray it too close to the pipe, i held my can 6-7 inches from my exhaust Hope this helps. ;)

hmmmm sounds about like what i did....do you think powder coat would stay on if i got that done? and what color would look good with a yellow 400ex?
