hey guys, i am just looking for some opinions here about what rear end gears i should put in my car. I have a 1979 Chevrolet Monza Spyder with a Small Block Chevy 350 with Vortec heads. The car is equipped with Edelbrock Intake, Cam, Carb, Cold Air Intake, and a Posi Rear End. The transmission is a 5 speed manual. The car currently has 2:53 rear end gears, this just causes the car to feel really really slow. Although first gear will prove anyone wrong about that. I am thinking about a 3:23 gear ratio would be better, but i am not sure? Any help? i will place pictures up if somebody wants some.

I bet the top end is fast with the set-up you have now! Id run the lower gears though for the acceleration.

it screams on the interstate and when passing people. When you stomp it and go, the car just lags then about 4000rpm you can actually feel the tires slipping a little bit. It has skinny/short tires on it. BTW the car only weighs 2800 pounds.

What's the tire size and ratio of the transmission?

3.10, 1.89, 1.27, 1.00, 0.84 transmission ratios.

and they are 13" wheels with a 20" inch tire, i believe...

Well not sure how it would work since I mostly used to working on muscle cars and trucks but maybe a 2.73 or 3.08 might work. Muscle cars usually get 3.55, 3.73 and 4.11.

This page might help http://www.4wheelonline.com/superlift_tiresize.htm

For a 20" tire, I'd run a 3.08 gear. It sounds like your motor is built for the higher RPM's if it starts really running at 4K.

3000k-4000k is where it starts turning.
