500 sportsman grinding sound when starting

Hey i have a sportsman 500 and when i turn the key all it does is make a grinding sound.............what would cause this? THANKS

The grinding is likely caused by a bad starter drive only half engaging so it could be a worn bendix or dry dirty one .hope this helps
