I have a question for the fishing experts on here. With a budget of $400, what round baitcasting reel would you get? A Shimano Calcutta TE, or a Team Daiwa Pluton? What would be some of the pro/cons of both? Thanks.

depends what youre using it for. Ive ran both of the mentioned reels and atually found that i liked reels around the $200 range better. I run Revo SX's and Curados mostly, but also have had good luck with the Pflueger Presidents.

I'm going to use it for Pike & Muskie, with 30lb braid on it

I'd look into the Curados, good reel for the money and theyre bullet proof. I'm more on the bass side of things but ill use my bass rigs for wiper on occasion and they really give the gear a workout.

Way too much pound test you're using. You don't need anything over 10 lbs , especially if you're using monofilament and fluorocarbon.

I mostly fish for pike and walleye . I've landed 20lbs+ pike on less than 10lbs test (I usually use 6 lbs).

As for the reel ... whatever you feel best with. Have them install the reels on a rod similar to yours and see how it feels . Remember you'll be using it for 8+hrs a day.

You still don't need 30 lbs test. You can do 15 lbs at the most with fluorocarbon and achieve better results than the 30 lbs on which you can't feel if you're stuck on bottom or have a fish on.

But hey ... what do I know.

No.....I get your point. But thats why I have a 7' 6" rod with a extra fast taper for more sensitivity.
