I am having some issues with my skidplates and such and am wondering if someone can verify that the 87 did have the linkage setup for the rear shock and such. I got a supposedly stock 87 skidplate and since my machine has linkage that drops down the skidplate doesnt fit. Is my setup an 88-89 setup? I thought that was the linkless setup where the shock bolted right to the swinger itself. I dont have time to look so i figured i would ask instead. Thanks for any help, I think i may try to heat up the stocker i have and bend it enough to fit but it will be quite a bit of bending to get it where it needs to be. ideas? steve

my bad, i should have explained that the one that is on there fits, the one i bought was wrong. It is an 88 skidplate that fits a no link swinger. heres a pic of it. I knew what i was looking for and after looking at the links and verifying that they were different I sent a message to 250rtrikes on ebay to rectify the situation. they have a 87 skid that is mismarked as an 88 on ebay now and should be the one that i have. steve

yeah im with jtr on this on eim 90% sure thats an aftermarket swinger so your probbly not gonna find one that bolts right up...

the oem one in the picture doesnt bolt up at all. it hits the drop linkage for the shock. I was wondering if I had a different year swinger but i found that the 88-89 had no link which is what this one is for. it doesnt have the notch out like the aluminum one does. The aluminum one is cracked at most of the welds so it is useless without getting it fixed or finding a new one. steve

what......88 being no link? All years had a linkage. the 2 changes were 85/86, both same length. Most of the 86 atc/trx rear linkage is the same for 86-89, dogbone being different. 87-89 is the exact same w/ all linkage parts. There are 3 skid plates, 86, 87 and 88/89. I would bet the 86 fits a 87 also. The area for the dogbone to hang is lower on 86, making 87+ ones not fitting.

Alright thanks for clearing that up. Do you know which one I have? I have to send this one back since it doesnt fit. I guess maybe i need to find the one that fits. I think the guy messed them up when he sent them but maybe my swinger is from a different year. Thanks, steve

this one says it is an 88 skidplate but looks like it fits mine since the notch is lower on it.

you got an 85 swingarm, so you need an 85-86 skid

very cool thank you very much! So at least i know what that is now. I will have to let the ebayer know that i cant use the 88 one either then. Steve

Hey, no problem, you helped by posting pics

the rear brake mount and swinger skid mounts are a dead give away. Only 85 used that style mount...also the carrier is a tad smaller and has a spanner style adjuster just so you know for future referance

what I cant remember is if you need to be sure and order 85 carrier bearings/seals..

someone here will know for sure.. deathman53?:D

that is also good to know. :D the 400 is wehre i know the info on lol I never thought i would get a 250 so i never really worried about studying up on them. then i found this beast for 750 bucks and couldnt pass it up. now i have a bit to do and then i can have a nice machine again and have a classic machine. I was told it had a 87 setup on the back so i just assumed it was supposed to correct. I feel bad now that i pmed the ebay guy and asked if i could exchange mine for the 88 one since it had the other. I assumed that they had just posted the wrong pictures for the 2 different ones since they had both selling at the same time. i then had to go back and ask if they had an 85 one and try that one. if not, ill get the 88 and cut the front part out of it since it will be closer than fitting compared to the 87 one i have now. lol that one is no where near fitting. lol oh well. steve

I think 87-89 is shorter at the mount from front to back than 85-86. I'd just try and sell or trade for an 85 or 86 swinger skid instead of messin' up the one you have...but its your call

Its never too late to start learning about these R's, they're addicting haha..and dont be affraid to ask anything...these guys are great

best of luck to you

250RTRIKES are very cool people...

I know these guys, they work closely with BDT Motorsports, talk to Carl, I am sure he will help you out & take the 88 back and sell you an 85 Skid Plate...

Carlos.

Carl is the guy that has been in contact with me. He seems like a great guy to work with. He said i can just send him the one i have and he will send me another one since they have an 85 one also. Thanks for all of the help guys! I would have got another one that was wrong. lol steve

carrier bearings are the same from most atv's 85 and up. 85-89 250r, 400ex, 300ex, 450r(uses 2 on one side, total of 3), 85/86 350x and 250x. differences are the width of the swimagrm, sprocket hub and location of the clip for axle nut. Yes, all the anti-fades will fit them also, spacing is the only thing that will be off.

nerfs and front bumpers for an 88 will fit my 87 correct? I am all confused now after seeing things on ebay and such that only list a couple of years instead of 86-88 or 85-88 something like that. After looking at the ref chart again, the rear grabs are different from 86-87 to 88-89 so that is a no go but the rest looks like it will fit. This is actually a pain in the butt to try to find the correct stuff for this thing. I hope i start getting some more hits on parts for it so i dont have to keep searching all over for this stuff lol. thanks, steve
