I feel for ya. I worked a few jobs and Im usually generally happy with them. But it always winds up where they take advantage of you or treat you like crap cause they found someone whose willing to be the gopher better than you were.

Unless you are your own boss, or you find that nice job where they treat you like a real person its the way it goes.

Yes some employers do care. I do high end remodeling (foreman) and my boss is awsome. When I went through a divorce he told me to take 2 weeks off and he paid me for them. That way I did not have to use my vacation time. As a single dad he let me set my own schedule at work. Christmas time My check would be trippled. I could go on and on.
The more things you can do that your boss needs done the more they will want you there.

I make ok money for the work I do. Its easy, very light stress, and the people are great to work with/for. By trade I am a mechanic, but at this job I am an operator, but I turn wrenches a little bit. For me to get another job, it would have to pay significantly more. And I probably wont turn wrenches full time for anyone anymore but myself. Which I am EXTREMELY close into opening my own shop.... I bat back and fourth a couple times a day.

In short, no. No employer gives a crap about you (with very few exceptions).

And yes, it IS getting worse. Right now, there are a lot of people looking for work. They can have somebody to replace you by tomorrow, for less money. The only reason they don't isn't because they "care" about you, it's because they would have to spend money and time on the training, and it's a little cheaper in the long run to just keep you.

The bottom line, that's all the company cares about. The company doesn't exist to give you a job, it exists to make as much money as possible.

my boss treats me like a son. i treat him with respect, do what im told and he does for me whatever i need. i can take any days off i need. he will give me extra money for no particular reason. i pay $0 for my health insurance. i dont make as much as i could at a big corporation, but i will take the trade off for the $10,000 a year more i might earn.

i have had other bosses that were incompotent and i couldnt learn a thing from. its the way big business works. as you atated, "you are just a number."

I work in a shop that rebuilds and repairs centrifuge machines. There are about 26 employees total throughout the office and the shop and its like one big family or one tiny town. Everyone knows everyones family by name and treats everyone with respect. I love it. For my previous 6 years of work before this i worked for a huge business. only thing they knew me as was "W. Young clock number 44693"

i just recently left a job at one of the casinos here in CT and can understand what your saying all to well. i was one of very few people with the training to run every kitchen in the casino and i did so occasionally, if they called i came running. recently a very close friend of mine passed away and after speaking with executive chef got permission to take funeral days for the memorial service and actual funeral. when i came back to work after said days i was suspended pending investigation because when the employee relations office got a hold of the paperwork they immediately denied it because the person whose name i used to get the time was immediate family and the executive chef decided instead of helping me out he was just gonna pretend he had no idea what was going on and said i lied to him also so i came back with two no call no shows on my record for no reason. i resigned rather then being fired for willful misconduct and am now out of work. thank god i'm expecting the position i'm waiting for to open up in the army and to be sworn in soon.

The key is to make yourself not just another number. Everyday try to learn something new no matter what to make yourself more valuable. The more valuable you are to the company the more they might compensate you and the more job security you have.

This usually only works at better paying jobs (were talking salary or high $$$ per hr). I was indispensable at a few of my jobs, what did it get me-
1. they expect more of you for maybe a small to mediocre. raise
2. B/c they expect more if you screw up they make you feel worse and come down harder on you than others
3. Once they find another idiot to do your job for less or be a better work than you you might as well start looking
4. Your only useful to them in your current role, cause after all should you move up the person filling your role might screw it up-they cant have that.

Depending on the job.. Most part is no they do not give a ****.. Esp huge businesses.. If it is a small company, you are good with the boss, you will be treated better.. At least from my exp.. It really is a shame, it just getting worse :( There are many things that used to be sacred that are not worth a **** anymore..
