this local bike shop has a 400ex motor that they say is a screamer, its a 460cc with a FCR carb included, they want like $1500 for it its a complete motor that is ready run, just bolt in the frame. would this be a good deal?

Imo I would Buy a yz426 engine and 250r radiator and have a real welder on the side weld it in the 400ex chassis. It would total about the same amount of money but you would drop about 30lbs and have more power.

That motor isnt gonna do much unless its got some decent head work nice a nice port job, that will really free up some power in any 400

so you'r saying the yz426 has more power than a 460ex ? i dont see that as being so. my 440ex has more power then most 450s.
and you can say it's a big bore kit. but it's still smaller than 450 cc.
a 440ex is realy a 435cc so its still 15cc smaller.

Your 440ex ( or 435cc... which i have never heard that once before.) will run with STOCK 450r's that are maybe piped and have SLIGHT mods. The 440, will have potential overheating and reliability problems, unlike the 426 which is water cooled and designed to be a 426, not a bigger bore. If you modify a 426 engine than you will be putting out more juice.

besides, isn't the 460 not a true 460 bore. Isn't it a stroker?

a 460 is a customized 440 piston with a stroked crank. i wouldnt waste 1500 on someone elses build, if he didnt use gt thunder head studs it wont last long at all, and a crf 450 cam chain should have bean used. a good cam and some seriouse port work should have bean done, id want to see reciepts on everything befor id buy it... whos to say its not a stock motor they are gonna rip you off on. you cant see the inside.

I would be hesitant with buying an engine without receipts and the chance to ride it.
I have seen to many people buy "race engines" or "A real screamer" without getting the chance to ride it and wonder why they get toasted by people that have the same engine with light mods.
I would say that I would give the builder of the engine some credit with running an FCR carb. I have seen several 440+ EX's running the stock carb which is terrible for a decently built EX let alone a large bore EX.
As far as a 440EX having more power than a 450, maybe if the 450 is stock. Once uncorked, a 450 will easily walk a 440.
Also, do not let engine size be the deciding factor of how much power an engine should make. It all comes down to the engines efficiency.
A YZ426 engine will make 45+ HP if it is stock and running correctly. An extreme build 440EX will make 45 HP and will likely have issues with overheating without a lot of airflow over the cooling fins and larger oil cooler.
As for a 440 actually being a 435, it is true. If you want to know the CC of an engine, here is how you find it.
.7854 x bore x bore x stroke = X
X/1000 = CC's
So a 440 has an 89mm bore.
.7854 x 89 x 89 x 70 = 435480.738
435480.738/ 1000 = 435.480738 CC's
In summary, ask for receipts, see if you can pull the engine in your quad and put the 460 in your frame to see if its what is cracked up to be. Then make your decision. If they refuse or are hesitant with letting you install the engine in your chassis, walk away. $1500 is a bit much for an EX engine too. $1000 would be a good starting point only if they have receipts and a larger oil cooler that goes with it.
Do you really need it? Unless your racing competitively then I see no real need for that much engine unless you just out and out want to go fast. If the above is the case then a real 450 quad is better period.

Another thing is the yz from factory is 12.5:1 compression and on pump gas while the ex would need high oct at probably 11:1 compression.
that engine with that carb is worth the money if it was build right and if they took the time to buid it and to add that carb it probley is. that setup is probley 80 -90 percent more hp.than stock if u got the port work and cams also
