Yes, the 2001 CR250 ignition is worth the money. By far the best investment I've made to my 250R.:D When you install it, when you first ride, it feels like the port timing has been changed.

if you need lights/power for stuff the cr setup won't work. There is a kit to get ~50w of power, that isn't even enough for a decent headlight.

It didn't work too well on one of my quads cause of the smaller flywheel but I put it on my trike and I cannot keep the front wheel on the ground at all. I don't have much done to the trike and it totally smokes all of the 4 poke 450's I raced. I think I had too tall of a gear on the quad.

I too am doing a cr250 ignition build. Is the flywheel weight worth it? What brand is everyone using?

That comes down to personal preference. One of the reasons I installed the cr ignition on my R was for the lighter flywheel (quicker revs).

regarding flywheel weight => depends, the heavier flywheel is better for low-end.

the heavier flywheel doesnt rev down as quick. With lightend flywheels they rev down as fast as they go up. With more weight the bike keeps its revs high allowing for deceleration and quick back on the gas. more lugging around.
I used to run a lightened fly wheel on my banshee, It was quick on acceleration but I found a lot of times I let go of the gas I had to shift down. with a heavier wheel I dont have to shift down as often. (more bottom end, although not really)

its called flywheel effect, literally...

I don't know how much seat-of-the-pants feel there is, but mathematically it makes a difference...

does the flywheel weight go on the outside of the flywheel? Is there any issue with space, it won't hit the cover?

You get, the CR stator, CR flywheel, CR CDI box, billet ESR coil mount, CR ignition to TRX250R case adapter plate.
No wiring harness because the CR stator wires are long enough over to the CDI box & coil you dont need a extra harness to plug in.
Dang, I cant remember if the coil comes with it or not.

so just plug and play

Sort of.
Thats the great part about the CR ignition, wires leave the stator & plug direct into the CDI box, one ground wire to mount & the other loose wire plugs to the coil.

90% of the stock TRX250R ignition problems, is harness connections.

Yes, the kit does include the coil, along with the plug boot.

I have about three rides on my CR ignition since I bought it, very happy with it so far. Best part is no more kick backs while starting, can actually start the quad in tennis shoes! Hard to compare to the stock ignition as I did not ride my 250R for about 6 months, would need to reinstll the stock stuff to get a good comparison. No problem in technical stuff with the lighter flywheel. Rode a race last weekend that had a lot of first gear, feather the clutch type stuff and had no problems. The only thing I don't like about it is no light provision, but I can always swap back to stock system if I need lights.

That right there would be enough for me... I want 2 of them, 1 for each quad.

no kickbacks from the cr250 ignition or the flywheel weight?

The iginition timing improves the kickbacks. I don't believe the flywheel has anything to do with it.
