Hey guys I am thinking of buying a 250r for my wife. I ride a 09 KX450F and I go to the dunes a fair bit with my buddies. Anyway she wants to go with us an have her own. So I am trying to find either a LT250R or a TRX250R. I like the 2 strokes for simplicity and I cant afford a new 4 stroke. I had a LT250R in high school and that thing was bullet proof but I know the TRX is just as bullet proof and hold their value better.

Anyway there are 2 Rs i am looking into right now an 88 and an 89. Both are pretty much stock. However the 88 has an 87 motor in it. Is that a problem? I know there are some differences in the motors for year to years, but i don't know what years are desirable.

The 89 is pretty much all stock but it does have an aftermarket rear axle. The thing that i don't like is the guy said the frame has a few normal honda cracks? I thought the hondas had much better frames than the LTr and they had no cracking problems.

Anyway, any other kind of information you could give me as I look for a quad would be great thanks.

Nothing is wrong with swapping motors from 86 87 to 88 89. There basicly the exact same. The honda frame is pretty stout, but has a couple spots that are prone to cracking from normal wear and tear. I would look into the cracks to see how bad they are. If your looking to ride one right away and not do work to it, i would go with the first one. the 88.

Thanks I appreciate that. Anything else I should look out for on these things?

The year of the motor isn't a problem. There are some internal difference, some of them major, some of them minor, but they all mount up identical (even the 85 3-wheeler motors).

And ANY of them can be built to produce great power, no single year has a significant advantage over any other year.

Well I picked up the 88 for 1200 bucks today. I got it home and I am actually pretty dang happy at how good of shape it is in. Everything is there except for the rear brakes. It doesn't look like much because it has been sitting outside at the Oregon coast for a while. So the plastics are faded (especially the fuel tank), and the frame and a arms have paint missing and surface rust over everything. No cracks though! It looks like it has had some work done too. It has 3 drilled and tapped plugs on the intake side. I have some pictures if I can figure out a way to post them. I believe its a larger carb as as well. Has a fmf fatty pipe too. I also got the 88 crank, cyl, piston, gears, and right side cover. He couldnt find the rest of the blown motor.

Oh the engine sounds great. No piston slap and no rattles, nice and smooth. Fired first kick too.

Here are pictures of the carb and the three plugs. What do you guys think they are for?

it looks like someone ran a vacume type fuel pump .why so many holes i dont know and u might ck out the rust areas above the swingarm mount ,because that is one of the places they crack ,ck the area were the steering steem mounts and the upper front shock mounts.someone on here sells a gusset kit ( i think its pumashine ,tlr ) the carb is not stock and the tranny vent below the reed cage needs a hose put on it

I checked those spots on the frame. Looks good. I have found no cracks yet. Anybody know what other rear calipers will fit the stock location on the rear. I found the master cyl, the caliper, and the hose in a pile of stuff I got with the bike. But the caliper looks like it fell off and was dragged down the road. JUNK.

JUNK. read thru the sticky sections up top. there is a thread on the rear 450r caliper swap. also i heard some yz front caliper works, but unsure. good luck, and that is a good deal imo. also the plugs might be for nos, but again unsure. They would not need 3 fittings just for a fuel pump.
