AUTOMOTIVE PAINT PUT ON THICK. But it's for 1/8 mile drags so it will last along time.

How do you think the automotive paint would hold up on a 400ex frame for MX? it would only be seeing the mx track once a month, that is it. no trails or anything.

if you put the paint on thick. and what i mean is 3 or 4 coats on. then the same for the clear and you will be good to go for a long time.

hey i give this guy props, you guys keep questioning him as for his color choices, not trying to start an argument but jus saying that he has balls for doing this and its going to be one of a kind, kinda like how it takes a real man to wear pink. it takes a real man to not care what other people think and go through with what he wants, good job and i love the frame color

Im not a fan of all the colors myself, woulda kept it pretty much only maybe one or two-but this is a drag bike. It is meant to be over the top and fancy looking. How many drag cars have you ever seen that were plain with maybe 1-3 colors only?

I really think he did an awesome job and when its all done he is gonna have one FAST machine.

Build a wheelie bar for it yet?

I think it will look sweet. Not what I would have done, but to each his own.

I was just thinking about starting a thread about painting. I really want to do my frame this winter, but I wont have enough for powdercoating.... :(

A friend who is an autobody tech and I were talking about painting it and he thinks that with like 4 layers of clear coats, it would hold up.

Can anyone else reflect on painting vs. powdercoating? I don't want to go through all the work of painting if its just gonna wear off after a year.

I should note: I ride trails, rocky hills, tall grass, all the places that are hard on a finish.

powder coating is tough ,but you cant leave any seals or anything that will melt on the frame or part cause of the bake cure, plus you bolt holes have to be plugged or else youll have to tap them out , Im no painter but i think i would rather tape it off then paint it every couple of years. Dont confuse the auto paint with rattle can paint auto paint is tough.

One more thing you mentioned going through tall grass, I have some lower a arms that are powder coated a 2 tone hammer finish and its worn down to 1 color now from trail riding .

Yea my buddy Jake (the autobody dude who is very skilled) were thinking auto paint.

My plan is to weld gussets, fix the one motor mount crack I have, sandblast the entire thing, prime, paint it a chevy red (victory red) probably multiple mulitple coats, then like 6 clear coats.

I hope it will hold up to the abuse I give it. I jump too high, scrape over rocks, run over trees..ect.

I painted my frame nearly the same stock silverish gray color (smoke gray actually)

Powder coating or painting it up all nice is cool and all but it always tends to get ruined by trail riding and racing around. I scratch something I get out the can and voila lol

10-07-2010, 08:16 PM
I believe ya.. Then again I donno if I wanna do the red because I don't know what I would make the a-arms and the swingarm. I don't want black because it would just look dirty in 2 seconds. I might just go grey also.

I can never make up my mind

smoke gray, literally 4 bucks a can at home depot lol

No we have not made any wheelie bars for it . trying to get away from them . and the 400 dont have them any more . he's working on slipping the clutch. he want to go to a drag bike but befor he dose that he has to learn to slipp the clutch out of the hole. lol he's been on dirt to long.

the motor slipped out of my hands as i was putting in the frame and made a small scratch in the paint so im fixing it. the motor weight is 135lbs so thats not bad just to get a small scratch.
