I drive a red 2004 Ram 2500, crew cab short bed. I haven't really been into messing with it, but I'm considering it now. I really don't want to do a lot since its a daily driver, so I won't go past exhaust, intake, & a chip as far as performance goes, but I want my truck to look good too. So I got this idea to use a spray on bedliner on my fender flares, but I have never done it thinking it will be overpriced, or it won't last long. I'm wondering if anyone out there would give me some insight.

I don't have a camera right now, but its a 5.9 with a manual tranny. Its got a 2 inch lift, and I have a set of 18 inch aluminum wheels, with some Cooper street tires, and a set of 18 inch black moto metals on Discoverer ATT's

I would buy some bushwacker flares, simply the single best ones out there, but they arent cheap.

Don’t worry about what it looks like just drive it and put your money on your quad where it belongs! lol

I have bushwackers right now, but they are red, and they are really worn from the last guy who had some bigger tires on it. I just want something different I guess. I haven't been putting my money into my quad as much lately so I'm branching out.
Oh and rpfeifer11, I get that a lot

First let me say I'm jealous haha (aren't you 17 or something?)

Secondly bed liner on the flares would be good. There are a few guys up in Toronto in our Subaru club that have bed linered their entire car and it holds up well to winter abuse, as well as being in the sunlight.

Get some 5" exhaust, a good intake(araid, AFE, ect) and a Smarty Tuner and your good to go! Myself i dont care for fender flares, but to each their own! Go with what you like! Ive got a 05!

I'm 19 actually. I'm going to go see how much it would cost to get them done. Besides that, I really don't want much more as far as looks go. Maybe they'll give me a deal since I want my bed redone anyways

Canadian144
10-04-2010, 09:08 PM
Ahh okay my bad. Still jealous though haha, I would have been more jealous if you were 17 and had a truck like that though!

If you have the time, I just say do it yourself. I don't think it's too expensive per can, and applying it on the flares should just be a day job. The guys who have bedliner'd their entire cars on the Toronto Subaru Club have done it themselves over a few weekends.

You could probably do the bed yourself too, if you have the time.

Just trying to help you save some money :)

Again if it won't be much to get it done in the shop... then why not!

tayyo789
10-05-2010, 01:10 AM
I always figured that the can stuff wouldn't hold up very well, but I could be mistaken. I definitely would do it myself if it will hold up though, theres nothing I like more than doing things myself and having it not suck lol

These guys pretty much hit the major points. IMO wheels make the truck. I'd avoid over chroming it. When you do all the cheap chrome add on's it looks cheezy. Possibly look into a nice grill for it as well if you're going for looks. Performance wise check the dodge forums and see what's the best tuner for your truck and get it. Get a good intake (I ran AFE on my f150) and exhaust.

This was my old f150 I had..

Which was upgraded to this...

agreed, wheels and tires do make the truck.. i think its the most effective (visually) mod you can do

not bad. What kind of numbers is that putting out? My f350 does that on the mild tunes. I'm curious to see what it does when I up it to the higher tunes, add my exhaust, and put my intake on. Spartan's estimated hp's are around 580 with 1100 ft lbs. Should be a monster.

I would start with a (afe ariad or a s&b) intake then onto exhaust it kinda depends on if you pull a boxed in or if you pull a trailer frequently how much you want to listen to drone depending on what exhaust that you want... and onto a programmer it all depends on what you are wanting to do with the truck if you want something thats going to be good for pulling adjustable on the fly and has built in gauges then the Edge Juice w/att is the best way to go but if you are looking into buying a pillar pod and gagues and putting out big power in the long run the smarty is the way to go

Thanks.. Get some vids up :blah:

Never been to the dyno, efi live, from some of my logs, have showed 624ftlb tq @ the crank. That is on 9psi.. Truck has went a best of 11.9 @ 113.6 with a **** 1.83 60ft.. With a diff set of slicks( get the 60ft down) it should go in the 11.5 range... Hell I have trapped 92 in the 1/8

Will do. I'm going to keep my stock wheels and possibly get a set of smaller drag radials just to do a track run. Trucks with a similar setup as mine are running low 13 second 1/4's and roughly 1.6-1.8 60ft. Keep in mind most of those are with 35''+ tires. I have the metric equivalent of a 33'' tire on mine but like I said maybe I'll snag up some smaller drag radials. Gotta say I tried out a 4wd launch the other day and it was pretty wild spinning all for tires. Depending how wild I want to go, if I headstud it, upgrade my injectors, upgrade the turbo, and water meth injection I could easily break the 700hp barrier without an issue. What comes into play is transmission. When my current setup is complete that's about the limit the stock tranny can reliably hold. I'd love to put in a HD torque converter and upgrade the drum assembly but it's a PITA. To pull the tranny it's a cab off setup. I'll pass on pulling the cab.

Thanks for the link, I have been ogling some of the pictures of various trucks for the past hour or so haha.

Maybe if I get a decent part time job next summer then I'll be able to afford a decent truck!

Just thinking, I think a second gen Dakota (like late 90s/early 00s) would be an awesome project truck... one that is in great condition body wise, but with a non-running engine or something like that. I'd drop in a 5.9L V8 from the R/T or the 5.7L Hemi from the Ram.

I've always liked those Dakotas... we had a 98 Dakota, as well as an 03 Durango R/T, and an 06 Dakota haha.

thumpin what drop ya got on that? and whats the wheel/tire size?

i just got an '00 sierra ecsb. i wanna do 2" shackles to level it, then 20's with some 285/50's. or 22's but not sure.

its a 4.8, id like to do something performance wise. is the blackbear tuning pretty good?

for the first guy, moding a dodge is alot more then a gm truck, the bottom line is for the same money a gm will run 10 times better..

Next guy, I am 3-4 drop and get some long tube headers, good intake, YES BLACKBEAR is good. Me and Justin know each other, he is the guy who does my tuning. You can't go wrong with him.. Naturaly the 20 are going to hinder performance. I am running 18x 9 centerlines on the truck

I local guy did the 5.9 swap on a dakota. I'll get pics when I drop my mustang off for the winter. Easily has $80,000 invested in his build. It's a pure show truck. Not a dodge fan but it's pretty wild.

Does he not know that you can get stock 5.9 R/Ts for about 5-10k (at least in Canada, cheaper in the US of course)? Probably would have saved him a lot if he started there...

very stupid. He's is his upper 70's age wise I'd say. Has all custom paint with matching painted rims and matching window tint. Did some frame alteration, hardwooded the bed, custom hard bedcover, etc. It's a nice truck don't get me wrong, but it's still a dakota and not my cup of tea.

I gotta say the new torqueshifts in the ford's are pretty impressive. Sounds like a lot of the gm guys are not happy with the allisons. Yes it is an allison, but it is also a budget built allison. In stock form they are almost already maxed out to what power they can reliably hold. So far I'm liking my f350 a lot. Runs good and I'm impressed with what you can do to them in the aftermarket world.

dodge...ugh...

First rule of owning a dodge unless its a cummins-sell it and buy a gm or ford. As a mechanic I find themt he most unreliable pos ever buillt period.

I do agree the 5.9 is sweet tho, but a 351 done up is even better.

I was to build a lowrider truck I would choose an S10 and drop a 350 in it. Light truck+powerful engine is awesome.

It sits pretty much dead level now, but i would like it to have a little bit of a bulldog stance, plus it rubs a little at full lock in reverse with the 20x12's. So another 2" should be perfect. If it ends up being to tall up front ill just throw an add a leaf in the rear.

The wheels are 20x12 Weld Racing Cheyenne 8's , personally i love them, it took be a really long time to find a set since they dont make them anymore. Its a 6.0 which will soon be arp studded and EGR deleted. Heres a couple more shots of the wheels.

ah ok I actually really do like them. From the first angle they looked like some weird design. How much did you end up paying for them? I had mamba m2's on my f150 and I think I might carry over a black wheel on my f350. I found a wheel/tire from the place I last ordered my wheels. $1800 shipped to your door for 4 18'' wheels with 35'' nitto trail grappler m/t's on them. It's $200 for shipping but the tires alone are worth over $1100. I'd love to go with 20's though. 20's on a bigger truck just fill it up so much nicer but I've been checking PSN.org and the other truck sites to snag up a set of 20's.

From the sounds of it a lot of guys are now going with the elite studs over the arp's. By online feedback everyone likes the elites better. If I ever have to do a cab off I'm going to stud it and get some tranny work done, but doing a cab of is a pain in the *** and right now not worth the effort lol.

Looks good bud, I'm a cummins fan, but them fords make the best lookin truck on the road hands down! Nice truck bro!

As far as the suspension goes, unless your dead set on 2" more, I think just add some longer control arms and that'll take care of your rubbin issues, that's what I did!

If I ever have to do a cab off I'm going to stud it and get some tranny work done, but doing a cab of is a pain in the *** and right now not worth the effort lol.

I was able to snag these for $800 for the set from someone desperate to sell quick. I got really lucky on that deal considering before they stopped making them they were around $1000 per wheel for the 20x12's. Keep checking the forums and craigslist eventually you'll find what your looking for and get it at the price you want trust me. It just takes time. I'll look into the elite studs for sure. I have a buddy who was a diesel tech at ford for a while so he said whenever im ready he can use a lift at a friends shop and we'll take the cab off and do the studs and the EGR delete from FCDP at the same time. I still have 1 year left on my 5yr 100k warranty so im in no hurry. I have an SCT sitting at the house waiting on custom tunes too.

As far as the suspension goes, unless your dead set on 2" more, I think just add some longer control arms and that'll take care of your rubbin issues, that's what I did!

Thanks man, im definitely a cummins fan too, but agree can beat the fords on looks. Although i would love a lifted mega cab. For the suspension i would love to convert to a 4-link up front but just dont have the funds for it right now. So a $50 spacer will do the trick for now. Plus i want some 36x15.50's for my next set of tires and could use the extra clearence for them later. Like i said ill probably end up throwing an add a leaf in the rear to pick it up an 1-1.5" so it doesnt sit to bulldog.

Your defiantly on the right track, those are the 2 most important mods to do to a 6 liter, are EGR delete and Studs! You guys got tranny, they'll support a butt load of HP in stock trim, unbelievable really! They are a really good motor if you do them right, and it sounds like your well on your way!

Hypersnyper I hate lifted trucks but your truck is beautiful. Yours has a nice lift and very nice sized wheels and tires. Your truck is just perfect and you do not have stacks so that is a huge plus.

The only thing I would add is chrome mirror covers. I put them on our 05 f250 and it made it stand out a lot more. Especially on yours becuase its a bring color and has all that chrome on it.

thanks, glad i could change your mind a little about lifted trucks :D

I plan to color match the door handles and mirrors white, im really not a fan of the chrome mirrors at all.

That would also look very nice. Anything would be a big improvement over the black plastic.

I'd like to 4 link my truck as well. Not sure if I want to go the lifted route though. If I do I'll probably go with icon. Pricey, but the materials are first class and the ride is by far the best. Check out the KEM tunes for the sct. I have a spartan for my f350. Hoping to put my exhaust on and get the dpf/doc off so I can run my higher tunes finally.

I'll have to check out KEM, so far im pretty set on Matt from gearhead automotive for my tunes. He supposed to have a great DD race tune for the 6.0. I have heard nothing but good things about it. Yea i also like the icon 4 link, but like i said money is the issue on that one for sure.

That is for sure. Parts for diesels are even more overpriced then ATV parts. But they are fun.

Who are you gonna let do the studs and delete on your truck?

I bought all my parts from Adam at First Coast Diesel.. I highly recommend him.

Thanks guys. I have a few more parts to put on and then it is done for now since winter is coming. I have a Airdog 2, rail shim kit, egr blocker, and custom EFI live tuning that will be done within the next few weeks. After that I am at a stopping point power wise unless I want to spend the money and get the tranny built.

Does that have the allison? On the online forums most guys seem pretty disappointed with them seeing that the ford and dodge trannys will hold more power reliably. Sounds mostly like a cheap converter burning up in them and they need a better clutch pack/bands. I'd love to do an elite or suncoast in my truck but I'm just not into the whole cab off deal. I have a lift, but pulling the cab is just not fun lol. My setup is to the point where I need transmission work as well. Probably still going to do an egr cooler delete with wastegate from MPD. Big thing I want to get done is new wheels and tires on the truck with a 2'' level. Also considering the idea of taking the truck to my buddy and having him paint the 2 tone gold part black with a red pinstripe to separate the white. Truck looks good but I'm not all about gold.

my buddy has the efi in his 06, putting down 530hp.

hes also running a TQ converter and shift kit and his holds up just fine.

Reliably you can only run max 425rwhp on the 6 speed Allison. Anything more then that it won't last long. If you beat on it real hard it won't even last at 425 very long. Not sure how your buddy is running that with just a Torque converter and shift kit, unless there is more done, but it won't last. The clutches will burn up. Just the way it is.
