Well these pics don't show much change... but it is progress. I have everything for it (almost) but its starting to come together let me know what you think. Just wanted to add something fresh to our slow forum.. I hope to have it completely finished by the end of this month though.

Is the fuel pump gonna be in the tank?

Derrick Adams
12-23-2010, 07:56 AM
Pretty sure I got an eyeball on your fuel tank last weekend. I think you'll have a hard time wanting to put a cover over that thing. Aluminum tanks are always a work of art!

hontrx265r
12-23-2010, 08:25 AM
Yes the fuel pump is in the tank as Derrick mentioned it being aluminum. I'm sure your correct on not wanting to put a cover on it. The only reason for even keeping that idea going is protection! I had an aluminum tank before on my walsh cannondale. If anything rubs against them it is very easy to wear into the aluminum.

Looks to be a CR500 link rear setup.

hontrx265r

Yea its just a cr500 link. Nothing crazy.

That's one of the reasons the CR500 linkage works so well. The closer the rear shock is to vertical, the better.

Did DASA custom bend that exhaust for your project?

I'm a little curious why you didn't run the exhaust out the left side. Would it be that the angle of the header wrapping around the motor be too much if it were to stay in-frame?

hontrx265r
01-11-2011, 07:37 AM
Yea I didn't do that because there is no room... thats where your intake is.. Also it goes from left to right on the crf dirbike also like a ltz. The exhaust "looks" really cool but I'll be changing it before its complete. I'm not happy with certain area's and feel it could be improved on so it will get tweaked. I'm also going to build a second system with my tc shorty just to keep that hybrid vibe.

hontrx265r
01-27-2011, 03:29 PM
No I don't but I'll take some and post them up maybe later tonight for you. Show the pump fitting etc.. So you can see what all was involved. But basically the sides are smooth. and the bottom is all smooth except where the pump is mounted and where the notch in the back is to clear the cr500 shock gusset. Thanks for the compliment. I've put alot of thought into this bike I know its been slow but when its done.. it will be amazing with no corners cut, and the airbox will be totally "outside the box" from anything thats been used on an atv.

Yea I'll probably get out and race. I haven't been on a bike in a year so it depends on how my knee is (torn acl) Class we'll depend on how I'm feeling. Still not quite 30+ status 28 this yr. haha. I saw you picked up that laeger thats a nice bike definetly be cool to get some hybrids together and do some riding we'll have to work that out forsure. Not sure if Jack (Jumbo) is still riding right now but maybe get him to come up too.

I wish I was still in my 20's haha...

Yeah I'm very happy with the Laeger man. The transition from the YFZ has been smooth and the handling is amazing! Took it out to Grindingstone last weekend and that was fun.

We'll have to get a bunch of hybrids together for sure on the track. Jumbo is still riding. He's doing Quad Wars this weekend and I know he's selling one of his LSR/CRF's that he just rebuilt. I'll post up on AZquads when I get out there again with him. He usually does Motoland because it's close to home, but I know he likes Speedy every now and then also.

I may have to hit up up on mocking up a DASA for my Laeger in the future!

hontrx265r
02-07-2011, 01:04 PM
You can see it a little bit on the pic one page back.. LT500 boot fits perfect (now that I redid the subframe and mounting points... I'll build the box this week hopefully and it should be running very shortly after.

josborn
02-07-2011, 01:34 PM
FYI - I think i have both the LT500 and LTR450 boots, and as long as they are what the seller says they were, they are nearly identical. I have had a 500 boot before, and it is. Never had a ltr450 boot before. I haven't tried measuring each, but at a glance sitting on the table they look the same. Just saying, in case the LT boots get hard to come by.

hontrx265r
02-07-2011, 01:56 PM
They are close, and I'm not sure about the lt boot being hard to come by it may already be discontinued. I bought a new one last year though. The ltr boot is made to go up over a rail though so the radius is tighter I believe and its also not as big around. But really the lt500 boot could not fit better. I wasn't planning on using it at all to begin with but it fit so good I went back to it. The yfz450 boot fit with the stock subframe, but there is no comparison on airflow... Lt wins hands down so I made a new sub.

josborn
02-07-2011, 05:45 PM
They measure about the same, its tough call becuase my lt boot is used, and has been stretch a little. The LTR boot on the right is new. But i mean they can't be very different.

atvmxer79
02-07-2011, 07:26 PM
those are both lt500 air boots NOT LTR450. Ltr air boots are not as wide at the airbox

josborn
02-07-2011, 08:13 PM
I thought that was ironic. Well my luck continues. I was told that I was buying an LTR450 boot (one the right), I was planning on seeing if it had a potential for a new intake on the Walsh. Does anyone know what they are selling??????

hontrx265r
02-07-2011, 08:23 PM
The good news is you would have wasted your money because the ltr450 boot probably has no future on that walsh bike. Your lt500 is what you want, now you have a spare. I pretty much hit this one right on though.LTR= tighter radius smaller diameter.

josborn
02-07-2011, 08:31 PM
I wondered about the little vent hole when I got this one. i had seen one on ebay, well anyway, that is good way to look at it. Spares are good, and it is new.

gtilley45

I wonder if Walsh still makes the intake tubes like the one on the Walsh YZ I just got. It's a pretty nice set up.

Yeah! I've been wondering that myself and been meaning to ask about that. I take it all the Walshs aren't like that? Should I just have that joint welded up when I tear it down for a rebuild?

hontrx265r
02-09-2011, 12:01 AM
I honestly have no idea obviously. I've never noticed it on any other ones. But then again I don't recall really paying attention to it either. The only thing I can think of is its there to allow a little movement maybe flex a bit?

02-12-2011, 08:28 AM
i'm glad to see theres still guys out there buildin there own hybrids, that was my plan with my R, but i found to good of a deal on my hybrid to pass up. awsum work man, love the custom fab work. With regards to that slip joint, my dad builds alot of chassis' and he always says if its designed to be rigid and it flexs then its goin to crack, if its designed to be flexable, and it flexs it dont crack. now with trianlges being the strongest shape out ther, on that subframe there wasn't any room for a diagonal brace so that cross member, would have all the stress on it, and im sure it would end up cracking. well thats my 2 cents on it. rock n roll guys

Very good point there. I had thought about the point you made, but I don't have very much expertise in that area (only a small amount of junior college strength of materials classes) so I kinda just shrugged it off as "ah what the hell do I know?" :D

hontrx265r
02-12-2011, 10:47 AM
The thing about gilly's sub is that I know I've seen others welded and you wouldn't expect that kind of flex to be an issue. But either way its fine.. The intake is coming along. Due to space restrictions Building a plenum style airbox like I had wanted is becoming much more difficult then I thought. The lt500 boot fits great though with no adapter. So for now I'm going to build a traditional airbox, which should be done next week and I should at least be ripping this thing down the road and getting it ready to put on the dyno..

well if u mentioned that b4 i would of saved my breath, n i can't tell if u bustin my balls or not? so since ur the expert does that make sence? or am i retarted.n if i am retarted what do u think the deal is with that unwelded cross member?

Had a small delay. Should have that flange done by Tuesday and start welding up the box. I went through it and tightened everything. put brakes on etc... so it will be ready to run. Gonna ride it a little, dyno test a couple exhausts, and intake. then ill pull it down and powder the frame once I know nothing needs to change. Also worked on a sweet billet brake disk guard this weekend.

02-22-2011, 08:23 PM
hey mike what did u think about how rath welded the 1 1/8 bigger tube on to the front part of the nerf so they slide on to the front pro peg mount? they did the same thing on my nerfs for my propeg yfz frame that has 1 1/8 diameter pro peg tubes. i thought it was kinda cheesy but it doesnt hurt anything i guess. it just seems like they could have used 1 1/8 tubing for the entire nerf instead of using 1 inch tubing and then adding a small 1 1/8 inch peice to the end.

hontrx265r

Well? How'd it go?

hontrx265r
02-27-2011, 07:47 PM
Went really good. I didn't get to mess with it as much as I was hoping. Had to help the father do a water pump on his jeep. Its definetly lean. Having a huge open intake, and exhaust I'm sure has changed the need for fuel. At the moment it just has whatever map on it came on the pcv (still runs pretty damn good) super crisp as expected. I'll at least load up a richer one for now. Should have it on the dyno this week. Maybe even track ride it on wednesday. Actually see how it really does. I'm waiting on a rear caliper rebuild, and still my intake flange so I can built the box. So couple loose ends and this thing will be coming to a close... Its almost sad. Its kept me busy so long I forgot how to ride..haha.

hontrx265r
02-27-2011, 07:53 PM
Here is a pic from last night. Couldn't get it to fire at first. Knew I had spark. Knew I had fuel pressure..which led me to the pcv. I had to change the wiring harness alot initially to put stuff where it needed to be.. Well needless to say it was a sunny afternoon that day and we dipped in to the rum a little hard. Had the t.p.s. and i.a.p. sensor crossed. I knew right when I hooked up the computer and had no t.p.s. reading what was up.. So note to self and everyone else. No bottles of rum while doing electrical..

hontrx265r
02-27-2011, 08:02 PM
Just a little more explanation on my thought process when laying the bike out. If you look at the front where the power commander is you can see I made a boot for it, and tab'd it. Well its hard to see but all the electrical is mounted right up front CDI, Regulator, Capacitor, Pcv, and hour meter all have a specifc tab and holder. Made for really clean easy to work on bike. 2 screws the plastic is off. 3 more the tank. 6 more the motor is out. Also pretty stoked on my x link mount. I took 2 billet eca clamps and went through the holes in the shock tower worked perfect

gtilley45
02-27-2011, 08:09 PM
Very nice man. I wish I had more fab skills like that. I have thought of a couple things I want to do when I tear my Walsh down, but it's stuff I'll have to get help with because my welding sucks and I don't have the tools needed to do nice fabrication work.

One of the main things I want to do is make something to keep the exhaust from burning the rear fender. My subframe has a threaded hole welded on that I think I can use. I was thinking of running a piece of round bar up from there, and bending it so that it holds the fender up off the pipe.

hontrx265r
02-27-2011, 08:41 PM
Thanks.. yea on the exhaust you just have to have one built because it will never be right if its not specific to the bike.

Well, you've got a lot of smaller parts that are gold. I just don't think black would look right, plus the nerfs are black. The plastic is white, so a white frame might be too much white. So I guess red would get my vote. But as you can tell from the pic of my old YFZ, I'm partial to a red frame.....if it's the translucent red like that.

Overall, I'd say either red (if it's the right kind of red) or white. I've got a buddy that had a white frame/white plastic TRX with a lot of black accent pieces and it looked pretty damn good!

I think if I went red I'd go this color which is fire red.

gtilley45
02-27-2011, 09:59 PM
Yep, that's the kind of red I was thinking of. That looks kind of like a trans red. I just don't think the plain red (kinda like the stock '89 250R frame) looks too good. But that color gets my vote for your bike.

White frame:o

White would be clean, Red would be bold. It just depends on what you want.

I vote White. Put the red in the grapics.

def. trans or fire red 4 the chassis

I think a black frame would accent everything including the chrome really well. My 2nd option would probably be that candy Fire red you posted. Overall it looks great man.

Would you be willing to fab up a DASA exhaust on another hybrid ?

Yea I can do a dasa for you. Just have to bite the bullet and buy one to cut up.. haha. They always turn out great though. I'd do it for a walsh yz too, but he's local..

Oh yeah, I completely understand. I don't know what I'm gonna do. I don't know anybody right off the top of my head that I think could easily could do that. How did you do yours, do you have a pipe bender or what? I wonder if I could just get the can to mount up how I need it to, then just go to a muffler shop and see if they could run the pipe for me.

hontrx265r- As soon as I'm ready to replace the Sparks on my Laeger, I'll have to get in touch with you about getting it done. For what model quad would I have to get the system for?

Gtilley- I put that YFZ DASA we talked about in the mail for you today. Hopefully you can make something work out to mount up a GYTR on the Walsh/YZ...I put a bunch of Walsh stickers in there for you also!!

I vote gold frame, with red accents in the graphics... motor mounts, etc... with a bit of chrome mixed in to give it some shine.

Thanks dude!! I hope I can make the GYTR work. I loved the one I had on my YFZ. The fit and quality of that thing was the best I've ever had my hands on, and it ran as good or better than anything else I've seen for a YFZ. Plus I just think it'd be cool to have one of those on a Walsh YZ. :D

Also, me and Mary have been kicking around some ideas for my graphics.

I got it out and rode it around a little again today. I remapped it a couple different ways. Got it running pretty good. Rips good for a stock motor. We're going to put it on the dyno next week, to dial it in and try out a few different things. Still waiting on a couple parts for my rear caliper, get my bumpers back and decide what color to do the frame..

Awsome!! Can't wait to see some videos of it!! In my opinion it looks much better than the new Walsh CFR, nothing against the Walsh build, I just think a Honda hybrid should have Honda plastic.

Not trying to be a smartass or anything but I thought that the new Walsh/CRF hybrid is actually based off of the LTR geometry which Mike Walsh says he thinks it's superior then others in his opinion. I thinkm that's why it may have LTR plastics as well... I think I heard that in a interview of him on video, could be wrong though.

Hontrx265r that machine is looking sweet! Can't wait to see it in person this season. Are you gonna do any of the rounds of the Beat The Heat series at Speedworld ?

hontrx265r
03-03-2011, 11:13 AM
cadwell.. thats what he was saying is that the walsh is all suzuki with a honda motor but thinks they should have used honda plastic.. I would have actually like to see a hybrid with 450r plastic with this motor but either way.. its all good. walsh's build is awesome of course but i'm extremely happy with the way this bike turned out. I've put a lot of thought into this build. As far as I'm concerned it couldn't be done better. Very nice 4130 chassis with good suspension geometry, protrax front end which I love, super light weight fuel inj. motor, extremely easy to work on!! Pull the motor from an Ltr then come pull the motor out of my bike and you would be amazed at the difference. Actually when I take it apart to powder the frame I'm going to time myself. I bet I have it to the bare frame in under an hour. That is how a race quad should be.

K gotta fill everybody in with an update. Rode the crf three days solid at glamis this weekend. Thing rips. At first when I rode it up and down the street it didn't seem any different then my yamaha really, but opened up.. it flat hauls the mail.. Bike was super crisp, handled awesome. Over all no complaints. I did get bucked into an endo 4th wide that sent me into a cartwheel ending in some seriously sore body parts.. but no harm to the bike.

hontrx265r
03-07-2011, 08:01 PM
Actually I still haven't started it because, I made two different intakes to try out. After I get it on the dyno and test the two I'll build the box.

atvmxer79
03-07-2011, 08:06 PM
Wouldn't the the airbox change the jetting

hontrx265r
03-07-2011, 08:59 PM
Well there are no jets..haha. Yea it will probably change some, which can be fixed again when its done. What I'm really after is basically how big of a filter does it take before you aren't gaining any more power? I want the most flow while keeping the filter down in size if possible. This way I can build a cleaner airbox.

gold frame dude.

hontrx265r
03-12-2011, 09:39 AM
I think I am going to do it gold, a couple other things may change. Basically what happened is the gold thats on all of it now, which has been on my one dune trip. The clear coat is just breaking and falling off like the crap that it is. Now since two different guys actually did that same color gold and both are doing the same thing. I'll believe them when they say its the powder. So I've changed powder brands and the color is slightly different. Once I see the sample I'll decide what to do.

Lasher
03-12-2011, 11:40 AM
My old 89 250R frame I had a dark blue powder coat with a blue metallic clear coat. Looked awesome and gave the color a "depth" look, maybe gold base and gold metallic clear coat.

Any event, the clear coat never peeled or cracked.

I have motor parts that have been sprayed with clear coat but I wonder if the powder coat place I had do my frame used a powdercoat clear, not spray?

I think it was just over 45min, with all hand tools. I didn't even get out the air. I did put this bike up forsale if you want to test ride it, it will just cost ya.. Stuff should be back from powder soon. I went with
Frame-gold
Wheels-gold/black beads
Bumpers/nerfs-white
Bunch of gold/black anodizing
I traded some stuff and got some RPM hubs that will be black/ white caps in the gold wheel
I'm also actually going to put a different cover on the seat even though its brandnew.
Switching to Gold Protapers/ Precision clamp.
Should be original and pretty nice when done, I'm doing custom graphics at the moments but have alot of work to do on that.

Wait your trying to sell it now?

hontrx265r
03-27-2011, 10:11 AM
Yes and no, if it doesn't sell I'm not going to be heart broken. But after taking this last trip out to the dunes with my new family. After being able to run solo for so many years. I've decided I think I want to build a badass sxs. I'm just not as serious about mx as I used to be. When I started this I was still all out riding at the track 2 or more times a week and I also didn't have the torn acl I do now. I have so much into it though I wanted to finish, and I still wanted to say it was the FIRST fuel inj. crf. hybrid, and I'd say I succeeded, Not to mention I topped all my expectations, and I'm very very happy with the bike.

No, I haven't put it together for the final time. I've just been really busy and there was a couple things I was still making, and I reworked the shocks to piggybacks rather then the x-link. (Just don't like dealing with the shocks being strapped together its a pain) Probably next week.

Who made the seat cover?

and

Did you have to move the lower mount for the motor at all?

I can't remember the exact name of the gold, but I can find out.

Jettrim made the seat cover, best covers around.

Yes the lower mount was moved, Also made two fronts, and two head stay mounts, moved the ignition coil, and put tabs up front for the cap, electronics, hr meter etc..
