Hetrick has the engine now doing their stuff. Hopefully we can get it back before snow flies. It just has a stock KX65 in it now.

It's a turd compared to out Hot Quad CVT 70 engine.

But my son would rather run this vs the cvt, even though it's slower.
He's still struggling with the shifting thing but he's getting better.

I know I'd rather have him run this. WAY easier on me.... Gas n go.

Those are some sick quads! I really like the pitster Tom, my question is why the kx65? Is there some reason you would choose that motor over another 65 motor?

Reason Im asking, is talking to all my dirtbike friends, they tell me that the ktm 65 is the best motor in that class. I picked up a ktm 65 the other day cheap, and Im thinking about putting that motor in our cobra. Just wondering why you chose the kx over others.
Thanks bryan

Thanks, we like it too.
I went with that because I had a KX65 dirt bike my kid played around on. In the begining I wanted the KTM. But I read on alot on mini dirt bike forums and alot of people said the KX w a little bit of work was a great engine. Plus a lot cheaper to maintain.
Hetrick has the engine now and he said when he's done it will be a runner. Looking forward to that.
We're talking to a few guys that are on the fence. They are looking at using the KTM85 because they seem to really like those.
If I could get a KTM cheap I would like to try on of those too.

Thanks again,
Tom

Stock VS stock the KTM engine is the fastest, about 2-3 moore crank hp in the KTM.We usually see the same diffrence with the 85cc.I think from 09 the 65cc KTM got better low end torque. But!if you are going to have your engine built anyway the Kx engine is as god a starting point as anything else.

My biggest concern is the pipe. Should i just take the afmkt pipe from the ktm, cut it to fit then weld it back up. Or have someone build a pipe for me?

Ive already got the motor and it was just built for national mx, it really rips. I was thinking of selling it and just doing the rm85 conversion, but with Ben being 9 im not sure i want to race 90mod just yet. Thats when i started thinking about the ktm.....
Since I have it and it could run 70mod at Nat's.....

Im pulling my hair out trying to get out of CVT's

09 and up ktm 65s have power valves and a real broad power band, that with the O.E.M hydraulic clutch may make the transition to shifting easier.. But pull out your wallet because they are pricey.

I got a 70 mod with a KX 65 for my son as well. Will post pics soon. The CVT's are frrrrruuuuusssstrating!!! I realized that even if we finished last, I wanted to be running at the end of every moto. Tired of stuff breaking. I think you're going to start to see a ground swell of people migrating to the shifters & mod classes. Your already seeing guys selling their stuff cheap to just get out from under it. Including me. The CVT's nickle & dime you to death.

The mods may cost more initially but I do not think in the long run they will nickel & dime you to death!

Cost per HP is cheaper as well. If a CVT 2 fast kit, with pipe, clutch, PVL, new is in the area of $3000 - $3500 complete, that same $3000 will buy you a real nice CR 85 set up for sure and would crush that 2 fast set up dollar for dollar and the reliability factor is far superior as well!!!!

Just my 2 cents.

I have been telling people this for years, and I can tell you first hand they will not cost more in a 3 year run as a cvt, you will save money.
(of course Im talking a full blown cvt)

A mod is not for everyone though so the cvt has its place in the racing world.

Hetrick is spot on. More upfront cost, less nickle & diming!! lets see.....tranny breakage issues, DRR frame cracks unless well gussetted & that's no guarantee, new torque springs often, roller flat spotting.....and the list goes on and on. For what you spend in a CVT race motor you can build a good dependable Japanese two stroker with plenty of power.

LOL Or two or three, depending on how wild your cvt build is!

I read a comment the other day that made me laugh. I think it was Mr. Havert that said "4-5 laps on the track equals 4-5 hrs. in the trailer working on the cvt" Wow, couldnt have said it better myself!

Bryan/Ben:

That thing is looking sweet !! Are you guys completely out of the CVT business? I know Ben will have that thing ripping around the track.

Zach says he wants to join you guys at Aonia versus getting ready for the GNCC FL race. So if we have the Apex 85 shifter ready we'll be running that with the big boys at the MX Nats. The storm out West has all our stuff sitting at a Texas UPS warehouse for the last several days. No telling when we'll get it. Got the Motowoz shocks though.....hope those babies are as good as they look.

We are waiting on our shock from Baldwin motosports for the mod. As soon as it gets here we are going riding. We have been riding with another kid thats 12 on a Cobra rm85. Its really helped Ben riding with another shifter. See yall soon.

I must be the lucky one, I got a 2-fast we have raced it for 1.5 years now and had not one failure, its extremly fast and onnly pd 1900 including the PVL . You guys are making me worry now , but i got my fingrers crossed for another trouble free season . WhAT KIND OF COSTLY REPAIRS ARE YOU DOING TO YOUR CVT MOTORS? what should i be looking for ?

edwardsp&b

I had a problem with the black ring between the springs. Now I am not at all bashing motowoz, let me get that straight right off. I just ran into a little problem, and found a quick fix for it.

I just installed the new motowoz setup on drr's at Lorretta's. We dont ride our National DRR at locals so we only had 2 rides on the rear end. I noticed after putting it together that it made a little spring noise when compressed down, but didnt think it was major. After riding that day somebody came over and was admiring the rear shock setup. He pushed down on the rear and the shock wasnt compressing just the springs. So I took it off when we got home (luckily we have been riding with a friend that is really good on rebuidling shocks) so we took it apart and found that the black ring between the springs would bind easily going up and down the shaft. I also found where the smaller spring wouldnt let the black ring fit in properly. I ground off just a little so the ring would fit in the spring, and I beveled the edges of the ring so it would slide better up and down the shaft. After putting it back together it works perfect. Im not a shock guy by no means, but I figured what I did was alright.

Kevin, you know more about the shocks than I, what do you think?

Also now after doing that the shock is better than ever! I cant believe the travel this shock has. I hate the rear of the chassis on a DRR, its just not made right. But the motowoz shock makes it as good as it could be. Just wish I had the money to change out the fronts to Motowoz. They are a great product in my opinion.

For a little history on this. This is one of the first mod's built by Fischer, which is the actual building block that JB racing uses for their mods. This uses 250r geometry and allot of 250r parts. Changed brakes and updated spindles and hubs to 04/05 TRX450r. Motowox custom built shocks for this build. This originally was built for Matt Bartosek and we purchased off of Wayne Haggerty so there has been allot of history with this atv which has seen allot of championships titles etc. This winter we changed allot of the outdated braking, spindles, hubs and other items on it. The Atv was completely torn down, repowdercoated and updated with allot of new items for this atv. We are using a cr85 motor with DEP Exhaust.
