View Full Version : 2005 wont stay running

Hi all new to the forum- well here is my situation Ive got a 2005 with no air lid, k&n with outerwears, HMF slip, and 152 main with a 42 pilot. I cannot get this piece to start, everyonce in a while it will hit run for about 1 second then die, will start if i stab the throttle about ten times before cranking but will just die after a second. Eventually after about ten minutes of doing this the plug fouls out. It ran ok about a week ago I had the same setup with stock exhaust it was hard to start but now it wont at all. I did not shim the needle clip (2005) and i dont have the special tool to adjust the air screw. I did not think that would be a huge issue if I did not adjust it but I am new to these machines so I dont know. THis jetting is what HMF reccomends for the 05 and up so I dont know why it isnt working for me sorry for the long rant been a long day and Im psst off any Ideas guys and girls? oh and why is the jetting reccomendations different for the 05s and up?

u said its always been hard to start soo maybe your valves need adjusted......or your carb could be dirty....just some ideas

Just adjusted the valves when i had the plastics off to rejet, Im starting to think that 42 pilot is too rich

most likely is... check your air fuel screw... that is a big decider in how easy it is to start...

thanks for the replies- would i be alright running the stock 38 pilot jet with the mods i have until my 40 arrives in the mail?

I've got the same mods as you (fmf instead on hmf) and I run a 152 main with a 40 slow and 2.5-2.75 turns out on the a/f and thats pretty darn close to perfect. You really need to get the D shaped tool to adjust your a/f screw for it to be correct. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think on 05 up the needle is non-ajustable.

yea your right, the only way for us to adjust the needle is to shim it. Is stock 2.5 turns out? and Where did you get your tool at? I wonder why the 05s and up respond so different to jetting.

I'm not 100% on the stock setting...2.25 maybe? I got mine with my fmf jet kit I've never seen one for sale by itself.

there we go crappy cameraphone shot but thats my new pipe just put on tonight after work. Bike will be murdered out eventually just sucks that i cant beat on it yet

yea its black too i forget who makes it the guy i bought it off of had it on there already. My buddy wants your bike bad but im trying to talk him out of it because he whip me so bad it wouldnt even be fun:) all we do out here in the country is race out in open fields so i would be sol

i think its ac racing cant remember i repainted it black with tons of clear (because of the chips) the first day i got it

well for anyone that is curious i switched the petcock to reserve and after playing with it, starting it runs for a sec start runs for a sec die- for about 10 mins it finally held an idle and now starts up easily and runs pretty decent will pull plug later to see how close i am to the correct jetting. who knows what caused it, Im thinking either the petcock needs to be cleaned or i was running so rich b4 i did the pipe that it took awhile for all the gas to get out of the motor
