Well I finally decided on a theme for my Laeger build, I'm going to do a "throw-back" scheme... I came upon this by accident. My frame was "supposed" to be powdered "gun-metal" gray, but ended up textured gray. I was dis-heartened for quite awhile, I spent $270 to get it coated. But as it turns out I think its going to be great for my new "scheme".

"Elsinore" is quite possibly the most famous dirt bike in history. The time was 1973, honda came out with the first production 2-stroke motocross bike. Many of you I'm sure have heard the history, so I thought it would be fitting to do an adaptation of this bike and build the scheme into my new build.

So here is the 74 CR125M, but it had the same color scheme as the 73 CR250M...

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i260/robltc/Project%20Elsinore/1974fullCR125.jpg

Here is the original 1973 Elsinore bike:

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i260/robltc/Project%20Elsinore/73ElsinoreLeftSide.gif

These are 2008 CRF450r's with retro graphics, that will be the baseline for my new graphics scheme:

This is the start of my build. The frame is textured grey powder, the rest of the parts are black, chrome powder, and a little bit of gold thrown in.... I think its going to look great. I plan to run silver fullbores with the yellow Honda wing and green graphics, with oval green number plates. More to come, but wanted you to see what I've got started... Tell me what you think good or bad I can take it :D :D

Very nice T! I told you it would all come together. Silver fullbores with Black and Green graphics? Some gold accent would set it off as well, too cool man! Some Gold Honda Wings would be badarse! I don't know if Fear250r told you yet, there's only 1 submission per member for the calendars. LOL!

BTW - looks like you have some Elisnore themed trashcans too. :D

Thanks Guys!!! I'll be honest and Dan can attest. When I got my frame back I was like "F----!!!" that doesn't look anything like I wanted... It looked like primer gray... LOL!! I was sure disappointed and there was no way I could afford to redo the powder at $275 bucks a pop... anyway so I got to thinking, at the time both the sub and frame was gray and just looked aweful... so I worked with my coater and he showed me some chrome powder stuff that he'd been working on and it looked great. He said he could do my sub frame and it looked awesome when I got it back so I did a bunch of odds and ends in that chrome powder to offset the dull gray look. I think its going to workout great in the end.

My original idea was far from this, but I've always had soft spot for retro bikes and Elsinore was my favorite of all time. The green and gray doesn't "pop" like bright translucent red or something but I think it looks like all "class" if that makes sense, and fitting since truely the CR250 was the basis for the trx motors, in a round about way... Also I like to do things that are different and I haven't seen this done on a 250r... I'm sure it has somewhere, I've just never seen it...

I'll keep this updated as it comes together. I'm at a stopping point right now until I get my motor situation figured out. The motor that was in it was a 310 XC motor, which I'm thinking about keeping in the bike. The short time that I did get to ride I thought the motor ran great... It just needs to be gone through and cases painted, etc...

Suspension-wise, still floating on that a little. The rear is pretty much set and I'm going with all new Ohlins TTX shocks all the way around... sweetest setup I've ever seen... FW Carbon is helping get the suspension figured out. Unless something changes, that is my plan for now.

That's all...

Yep he told me, maybe 2012 calender. I'm not sure my XC bike is calender worthy anyway. Its still not finished... LOL! I want heel guards and black number plates, maybe some Hipers too, PC my wheels black... bikes are never done though are they... LOL!!

Dan, all I want to know is when are you starting on your Laeger build? I know you've been thinking about it!!

this reminds me of the dodge ram trucks they did a few years ago. like the "rumble bee" and others. this is definitly unique and to be represented by the legendary trx250r speaks volumes.

definitely not the theme you see each day. I like it a lot. I still want to build me a full blown bad *** 250r with the 1986 throwback graphics on it. That will be my next project which I am thinking about starting here shortly again. I need a hobby lol

What color are you planning to do the a-arms? The ohlins will tie in nice with your touch's of gold!

I'm planning on going black lowers, chrome uppers... +3.5" in length. I've also got a brand new chromed Hinson clutch cover assembly, that I might make my own cover for with the Elsinore logo on it and powder coat either the green color or go bright gold with it.

Thanks all!

Update been working the the graphics some, (kind a fun!!). I've been designing these myself and they are a work in progress... LOL!!! see what you think good or bad... I've got a better version of this designed already but I was not able to save to a jpg just yet. Its pretty similar to this (this was an older version), but you get the idea. I still need to add the TRX and 250R lettering. Still trying to figure out what font I want to use...

before the Nazi's jump on here and shut my thread down.... DISCLAIMER: NOT FOR SALE :D :D :D :D

Cannot wait to see it finished! I loved that quad, even won my first race on it... I could not be happier it went to a guy like you that puts that much time and effort in to his equipment!

I took second place on your old quad my fist race on it then we had a bad hail storm hit the house and that ended my season for this year... I will send some pics when I am done with my build!
Keep the pics comming!

Update: Finally got the +4 T-pin front end in after the shipping debacle... Waahooo... anyway it is mint near new condition... I installed it this past weekend along with my Precision Pro stabilizer, from a KFX450. The 400ex shocks are just to keep the aarms from sagging down and possibly scratching something. Ohlins TTX's are in the works, unless something changes in the next couple of weeks... Right now I'm hanging onto the PEP rear CR500 shock, but I might be putting that up for sale after I figure out the rear end. most likely a custom Ohlins rear as well.

Also got some OEM decals from Harlan to add that factory "look" to it. I super glued the Laeger decals so those new style will stick... other than that just waiting on my ship to come in so I can pick up some more parts. Decided to build a 302 Nat'l motor inlight of C-Leigh explaining to me that the AMA rules increased displacement to 302 for the 2 strokes...

next on the list is axle, radiator, harness (CR), and a few odds and ends that i can afford right now... haha..

Thats a good idea, A new ESR 310 PV would not have to have the cases bored and be economical on the wallet.

Probably midrange to lowend. I want grunt with this motor. I'm also considering a PV too. 230-240 lbs compression, 116 Octance fuel.

The other option I'm considering is putting my Curtis Sparks motor into my Laeger and buy/build another motor for my XC bike. The Curtis Sparks motor is a 280cc, mid-top ported motor and not ideal for my XC bike anyway. (or sell the top end and pickup another topend for that motor)... I've got a few options.

Replace the TRX with the Fourtrax! This is going to look sick! Would you be doing the Fourtrax in the gold that it says 250R in? I think that would look sweet.

250Renvy
12-02-2010, 02:50 PM
Do you already have a seat cover planned?

I think you should look at the old graphic on page 3 and keep the kick start area green, with the silver frame you want that extra color (depending on plastic color)

I think it's nice and clean with just the lines and color on the front and the honda logo.

Maybe even ditch the fourtrax and 250R on the front part and put the fourtrax or 250R in the seat cover.

If you remember each year of the 250R has only 1 fourtrax and one 250R on each side.
86 - fourtrax up front, 250R on side rear decals
87 - fourtrax in the seat, 250R on side rear decals
88 - fourtrax in seat , 250R up front
89 - fourtrax up front, 250R in seat.

Sure looks sweet, I had a 75 cr125m elsinore. That year they had changed the color from green to red!
Looking at the first set of picture, I have to ask 'with the term elsinore, honda was distinguishing its new 2 stroke line from its normal 4 poke building, why then would anyone put the elsinore name on a honda 4 poke, when honda only put that name on its 2 stroke line?'

I was just looking at your Graphics and I think that you should ditch the TRX and the fourtrax and leave the 250r up front. That would look sick I like your overall design, just make sure that it doesn't get to busy. Looking good man!!! I do like the green by the kickstarter on page 3 better though. The older elsinors were simple and I don't think that you should over do it. Its real close though, just keep tweakin it a little and you have it right where you want it!!

troybilt
12-11-2010, 12:37 PM
1. It was on the bike when I traded for the bike, so I'm not 100% sure...

2. The narrow frame I don't think the standard 250r one will mount, the KFX is a narrow front...

Honest opinion troy, Its a good looking design, but im sorry i dont think of the "Elsinore theme" when i see those aftermarket logos on your last design posted. I really like the one on page 3....BUT it needs to have silver where the white is. Even the number logos and the stickers that go below the seat are DEAD on!
If you added the silver, I really think you would nail the Elsinore theme with the page 3 design!
Whatever design you come up with or decide to use...I know it will look killer in the end!!!

All: Update I bought a set of PEP PB1 shocks, so I'm going all PEP on this build. I tried mounting my Floats and they were just too long at 20".

Nice, Did you get piggybacks or remote rezzies?

If you got piggybacks PB1's, which I think most are, don't get a Walsh radiator like you were thinking of, because they would not clear the shrouds. Although, now that I think about it, it might just be because of the upper shock location on my frame...

Anyway, just keep that in mind, it sucks when you buy stuff that doesn't fit...

Yes they are the piggy backs. Thanks for the heads up. I'll keep that in mind.... I plan to run my FW Carbon shrouds now, vs. Walsh radiator. Probably pick up a PWR or something.

Are you sticking with the PEP rear shock that came with it? Revalve?

Yes, they all need to be revalved though. The PB1's are setup for 190 lbs rider. I haven't weighed 190 since I was a sophomore in high school... LOL... the rear also needs to be freshened up.

About the the KFX damper you are correct the regular 250r one will not fit on the lager frame do to the rails being close together!
What did you ever do with the engine that was in the quad? That was the most well rounded 250r engine I ever road. Had grunt on the low end and had plenty of over rev.... All the porting was done by Mr. Hawk himself!
I am glad I get to see the bit by bit as you build it... I sure do miss the simplicity of that quad!

I sold that motor to help buy the +4 T-Pin for the front end. It was a solid motor. I loved the low end power of that motor...

I can't wait to see how that turns out, that's the biggest reason I don't PC mine because I don't want the etched letters covered.

did you consider having a CNC program written based on what needs exposed? you could put it into CAM software and export it from there. get yourself a test piece confirm all dimensions and hopefully, it will remove all the powder(where needed) and not mess up the nice PC work.

just a thought...and i tend to over-think things that might have simpler solutions.

Most of them are anodized, but that still wears/fades and is a pain to redo.

Has anybody thought about trying to fill the engraved part with high temperature silicone then powdercoating it whatever color then peeling out the silicone? I would think it would act like a barrier like tape and plugs.

Maybe you can send it to someone who ports cylinders? They could probably do a good job, but it wouldn't be 100% uniform.

Maybe you could try a paint marker?

Or have a custom Elsinore cover done! I know their are some people that make their own... I think someone on here has had one done before?

Just a thought, a paint pen would probably work just as well. It would take a fine hand, but if you get a small enough tip, it would just go in nicely.

Or if you didn't want to go even that far, a little paint in a syringe and a wide needle would work as well. Paint it in instead of etch it out.

Just a thought.

I find the inner letters are the most difficult cause with the thicker powder there isn't much of a "track" for the engraver to follow so you have to super steady...

It was like 34 bucks, plus 3 for the diamond cutter... from sears.. I figured if I screwed up I'd just recoat it and forget it, but its working pretty good. Like I mentioned, the BILLET-PROOF lettering is a booger, theres not much of a track after the coating.

yes, let me finish it though... now you've got me nervous.. the small letters you have to be extremely steady... LOL!! I should have left them black.

Here's some close ups... I think i can do a better job, if I was to do it again I'd leave the Billet-Proof Products black or get a finer bit for those... The rest of it looks pretty good, the R in Racing was the first letter I did so its the worst but not too bad.. like I said you need to be extremely patient and have steady hands... well worth it in imo... you guys may not agree, but having one that's black powder coated is FAR better than the anodized stuff that gets scuffs so easily... these are random, I didn't focus on the "best" or anything, just random shots...

Thanks Keith!

Yea I bought the engraver at Sears. Word of advice though, I would leave the inner lettering and not try to mess with those letters... They are hard to do, almost freehand, since they are not very deep the powder almost covers them so there's not a groove to keep the tool in. That and you have to be really steady.. haha!!

Updates: Yes bike is coming along nicely. I'll get some updated pics this weekend.

1. I sent my subframe, headstay and motor mounts off to be show chromed, should dress it up some more.
2. Bought a Pro Per4ormance radiator from Dan and polished it, and installed my FW Carbon White shrouds, looks sick...
3. Ordered a Precision bar clamp, should be in on Monday, can't wait to see that.
4. Ordered some stainless braided radiator hose -12 AN size. Got it in last night, looks awesome. Its not a stainless hose cover, this is the real deal here... also got some chrome hose clamps for it. Still deciding if I want to gold annodize color powder coat the fittings...
5. Speaking of gold annodized powder, I dropped off some parts to get coated last week. Going to do the grab bar, (possibly) bumper, and some other misc odds and ends for accents.
6. Ordered billet CR ignition adaptor from ESR and CR coil mount from Pumashine... That should finish up my ignition and motor stuff for now.
7. I also bought a fresh bottom end to build another motor. Going to take my time on that though, plan to run the Curtis Sparks motor for now, and build a big bore 350 LED motor or similar with my new bottom end.
8. Picked up a new 450r antifade, just need a galfer wave rotor and I can finish up my axle/rear end. Converting to 450r rear calipers... I already have that.
9. Sent all my shocks to Seth at SF Racing to rebuild them for me. Can't wait to get those back, the PB1's and bad-*** haha...

Anyway, that's about it for now on updates, I'll get pics this weekend when I get some of this installed...

Thanks!!!

I could be wrong here but don't those require the correct end on the radiator and head, clutch cover, etc... to work.. at least that's what I was told. They are not a clamp more like a flared fitting, unless I didn't see what your talking about... otherwise, yea I'd rather have that type of fittings too.. I'm just not seeing it..

and I do think they are gel coated if they are the same as the hoods and tank covers, the gel coat gives of a nice deep color and shine, im definatly a member of the Fourwerx fan club lol,

my build is going to have at least a half a dozen of his custom products on it!!!

Yeah I've been talking to Jay! Thats funny I have 4 of his products on my bike now and I'm waiting on a set of shock guards for my Lobo. I like his products alot too!!! It takes a while to get custom parts, but they look sick!! He does a good job on them and doesn't seem to cut corners at all. I've been very pleased with his craftsmenship. He's got a good eye for detail! Making sure that the products turn out like they're suppose too.

Just got my Precision bar clamps into today. Those things are sweet. Can't wait to try them out. Very well made, we will find out how they work!!

I plan to run all FW carbon stuff, hopefully showcase the new hood he's been working on.. just not sure if they will be done in time though...

I know what you mean. My shrouds are awsome and he did a great job making them, but there appear to be for a stock radiator and mine is a PWR. I'm real interested to see the new parts. I have another build comming up and I wouldn't mind some sick new parts!!!

I think the first design looks the best for what you are doing...the one with the logos in the background are to busy and dont represent the bike your trying to model it after

I hear what you're all saying there's just something not clicking for me on the first sets of graphics. Maybe I need to go back to the drawing board literally. I like the more modern style, but you're right it doesn't capture the Elsinore theme as well as it should to be a "true" Elsinore quad... Hmmm... Let me try again. Maybe something more simple...

The other idea I was going to try was flow the graphics down onto the radiator shrouds, to give it more depth and cover.

I would go with the classic don't forget it will look far more busy once its on the quad with other details to look at.

Perhaps you should outline the number graphics with a think black border to make them stand out.

Or combine the two and have a considerably faded logos in the background of the classic, kinda like a watermark. This will grab eyes and make them look closer when its stopped but look classic and un-cluttered at speed, kinda best of both worlds.

Good luck with the decision.

i have to agree that the classic style graphics will capture the nostalgia of the ole CR elsinore bikes.

i think once it is stopped. people will look over it with a fine tooth comb and ask a ton of questions. this will negate the need for sponsor/vendor labels. unless, they will throw some free parts your way for the awesome advertisement you are doing:D

I was planning on doing something like this. The modern graphics with the classic number plates ovals etc... So a little bit of both of these designs was my original plan...

definitely go with the classic style with a black border around the number plates, but i'd ditch the "elsinore" on the sides. too much "elsinore" in such a small area IMO.

Not sure where the cable came from. It was part of that package deal that I traded that 450r roller for. I've got a couple more you can try I don't know what size carb this one or the others is for, I also have the stainless clutch cables too, I'm running a Magura and didn't need it... Thanks guys!

Little update, worked on installing the sub frame, exhaust, and airbox this evening... Picked up some new exhaust springs with covers from Trevor at TLR as well as Pumashines coil mount, from same place. Both look awesome, waiting on my shocks from Seth at SF, hopefully they'll be done in the next few days. Starting to take shape..

Still trying to decide if I should leave the airbox polished or powdercoat it. I'm working with my coater on a "special" bright annodized gold look, very similar to my handlebars.... First attempt didn't work out so well, but we've got another plan. :D

Also interested in the heel guard, peg combo pdxbigfoot is working on with that fabricator he's working with. Getting close, still need plastic, hood, seat foam, wheels, tires, and few odds and ins...

Sorry missed this post. No I haven't checked into clear annodizing. I'm not sure we have anyone local that does annodizing. I was actually going to chrome the airbox, but was told chroming aluminum was a whole nother beast than chroming steel... i.e. MUCH>>> more expensive. I also thought about clear cermic coating, I might check into that a little more.

My coater is working on a "bright gold" for my project. I went with a gold annodized powder, well its turns out that didn't work out too well luckily it was just a test piece. So he's going to try chrome powder as a base coat then gold annodized powder over the top. My goal for color is something close to my ProTaper handlesbars, not for any particular reason, I just love that gold color... really pops...

I'm mechanical, NOT artistic, so don't put a whole lot of stock in my opinion, but I think the airbox would look best powdercoated black. It would really make the chrome subframe pop out at you.

yea, I've thought about that too, going with a wrinkle or flat black to make the chrome sub pop. Then Ithought it would look just like a stock plastic one.... but maybe it wouldn't... I might reconsider.

I'm thinking gloss black would look best (provided it fits with the rest of your theme), and still provide enough contrast to bring out the subframe.

And personally, I wouldn't worry about possibly looking like a stock plastic airbox, because I think your goal at that point is to accentuate the subframe.

It's like a girl with pretty eyes, but fantastic jugs. Why would you wear that ugly sweater just because it matches your eyes? You're hiding your best feature in order to bring out your second-best feature. Wear the low-cut top and show off that fantastic rack, it's going to serve you better in the long run.

I worked for a USAC midget team way back in 92. Everything for the cars was detailed and polished up. For the dirt car we clear annodized all of the polished alum. Radius rods, oil tank etc etc. It held up great and was super easy to wash and maintain.....oh wait there was no maintainance to the shine.haha. It got pelted over time but I think your airbox would really last.

You could always make her feel better and offer a chair in the garage, just put a clause in there that wrenching may be required, or at least fetching tools.

Another option would be to contact Fat Heads, and have them make a full size portrait of her and adhere it to a wall. You could put whatever outfit you wanted on her. Remember that standup they had in the movie Major League? Lol!

Another option would be to contact Fat Heads, and have them make a full size portrait of her and adhere it to a wall. You could put whatever outfit you wanted on her. Remember that standup they had in the movie Major League? Lol!

Dammit Dorn, get it front of the ball!!! :blah:

that's a good idea... "Everytime we win a game we peel a section... "..... hahaha....

I wanted to propose to my wife at the track, but everytime she was suppose to go, something would come up and she couldnt. So my patience wore thin, i had her come to the garage and sit on my R, and thats where i proposed to her. Now she lets me spend whatever i want on it :D ...LOL

Bike is coming together, got the seat cover installed and the tank. Ordered up new hood and tank cover from FWC...

Still trying to decide on wheels, shamrocks, hipers, G2's, etc... or some custom OMF's.

If you are undecided on wheels and want to see what Tech 3's look like, just let me know. You can take them and slap them on so you get an idea.

Also, my buddy who races Nationals back home has complete set of CanAm tires take offs - Razr Cross Fronts and Regular Razr rears for pretty good price. He's sponsored through Hoosier, so these just sit.

Yes actually. Working with FWC on a Carbon fiber airbox for it. I bought a CRF airbox and was going to try and modify that for a mold, but the boot didn't work like I had hoped. I really like the cage style filters, easier to swap filters, gets away from the stupid hose clamps.. But they require more space between the subframe rails...

I also want to get away from the 86 airboot since you can't get them new and are hard to find in good condition. Next step is trying a YFZ airbox and boot, like the hybrid guys use... and work on a mold.

I still need to install my Titanium bolts for the aarms, plus working on gettting full set of Titanium motor mount bolts, and swingarm bolt.

Lastly, I sent the drawings off for a 3.5mm Kevlar/Carbon MX glide plate to be cut for it on the water jet...

Little update:

Just received my Factory 43 nerfs w/integrated heel guards, bought these through Jay at FWC... They look sweet, I'm making some adaptors to mount to the 88/89 style peg mounts. Other than that they should work great. These are originally for 04/05 450r. Steeve at F43 was all about making them specifically for the 250r but he didn't have a 250r frame to use make the jig.

I took a chance on these, and I think its going to pay off. I'm thinking I'll powder coat them black, but kind of torn on that right now. Natural finish looks pretty good too.

Check'em out: (integrated heelguards, stainless wide pegs...)

Those are sweet! I would like a set without the heel guards!Too bad he hasent had a 250R frame to work with,we could have got a group buy going! As for PC black, what are you doing with the bumper & rear grab bar?Black does go good with the green you are using!!!Cant wait to see them mounted up!Keep me entertained, cant do much with this shoulder!:(

I tried getting hold of them about bars for a long time and he never returned one call or email. Figured if you don't want the business I don't want the product, but they do look nice. Glad to see you got some in your hands.

I talked to Steeve a few times, didn't have too much trouble. I thought the same thing about Rath and Houser... I know how you feel...
