Just my .02 but after owning my CBR600 and now owning a cruiser..... I will never buy another sport bike. Cruisers take the cake for me.

nice bike dude:)
that was a good deal...
why do you dislike sportbikes now.?
i was looking more into the cbr125 or kawi 250

I don't dislike sport bikes, I just prefer a cruiser. They're a ton more comfortable and in my opinion are 20 times better for city driving. I do plan on buying another sport bike but it will be track only. From riding both types I much prefer a cruiser around the city and on highway.

have you thought about a supermoto? They handle the twisties way better and their seating position is alot more comfortable.

i like my cbr600f4. not a total lay down type of bike but still has 100 hp. fun bike for the day stuff. I wouldnt go over 100 miles on it at a time though. after a couple of hours that cool seat isnt so cool anymore on any sport bike. lol the older bikes will be the best starters since the insurance will be less and if you tip it over or something it is pretty harmless. you wont be wrecking a 3000-9000 bike. steve

is it possible to get an oldschoolkawai and put the new 08 or 09 plastics on it.?

If we're talking about the supermoto's that are essentially street legal dirtbikes with street tires, I'd say they'd handle better. If we're talking about something like a Superduke, probably not hahah.

i promise you no street legal dirtbikes are taking the 90 degree turns at 70+ that i do. maybe the crazy sharp 15mph ones

but at 5:07 thats the only weakness to a supermoto. sure a very good rider can hang in the switchbacks but give a rocket one decent straight and you will be wishing you had one. and to the starter bike get you a ninja you wont regret it. heres my old bike but i sold her to get back on a quad. after i watched two buddys hit the guard rail while dragging knee's up 181 the same road the steele creek gncc is on.

or would a 250 be better.?

Any older bike you should be able to grab around the 3-3500. Maybe a 1st gen R6, older cbr or gsxr

Saw an 05 R6 with 21k he was asking 3500 i believe, but was looking to unload it pretty quick so imagine it didn't last long.

Just give whatever you go look at a good going over and take it for a quick spin to make sure the motor runs good and the transmission shifts smoothly.

Whatever you buy, please take the MSF course.
Kawasaki Ninja 250...the king of starter sportbikes. The new ones finally have the cool plastics!!!!
After that,I would look for an older CBR 600 F2 or F3.Pretty comfy, for a 'rocket' Not as peppy as the new stuff, but fast enough to...well you know :(
And advance up from there.
Ride smart,ATGATT!!! and watch the cagers...I've always said if you want to see how stupid people are behind the wheel....buy a bike.
Anyhow...here's my 900 ('94)

how do you get your knee down like that. i've been working on my cornering so much lately, my tires are worn down completely to the edges and i can pretty mych keep up with guys dragging knees but mines not even close  i try doing everything i read, weight front, look ahead through the turn, weight the inside peg

you get your knee down like that by going into that corner about 5x faster than what feels right for a normal human to take that corner. you gotta have a big set to take your knee away from a bike and trust that there is no gravel in the corner to slide on as is what happens on almost every road in northern wisconsin or michigan. lol the rocks and the deer keep me from even thinking about going fast enough to do something like that. steve:eek2:

it really just comes with seat time as well. as soon as you get reaaly comfortable cornering at high speeds you can do it fairly easy. but ive watched too many friends slide into a guard rail so i quit doin it on the streets.

If you've ridden other things with gears and a clutch (especially dirt bikes), then I would probably say to start out on a 500cc or larger bike or you will get terribly bored in a hurry. If you aren't that comfortable on 2 wheels, or with a clutch then a 250 might not be a bad choice, but I think still even a tame 500 would be fine.

Really, when it comes to modern 600 class pure sportbikes, there isn't a ton of difference as far as 'difficulty' when you compare them to riding a 1000. Meaning, somebody riding a CBR 600rr confidently shouldn't have any trouble riding a CBR 1000rr with close to the same confidence.

If I were you, I'd start out by buying something that you find a good deal on. Whether it's a newer 500 or 250, or an older mid to late 90's 600 sportbike, or whatever else you come acrossed that's cheap and you can resell for either what you paid, or even a little bit more.

That will give you the seat time you need to get pretty comfortable on one, and it will also give you time to kind of figure out what you are looking for in a bike. Then go out and buy something in nice shape, that's more of what you are looking for.

Just my thoughts.

BTW I have a GSXR-1000 and a Yamaha R1.

BODY POSITION

First get yourself a suit, some boots, guantlet gloves (assume you already have a lid)
Second get to the track, learn how to properly ride at fast speeds (Nesba, Sport bike track time, are two good orgs)
Third get a second job to support you track addict ways

Honestly body position is the biggest thing, if you are not off the bike enough you won't touch knee and you will run out of tire and low side. Just becuase your are on the edge of the tire doesn't mean you should be draggin knee.

Agree speed is a factor along with some other things, but body position is #1. Don't worry about that weight the front and peg garbage thats later on after you get the basics. You always have to look through the turn though ha ha.

Don't do this on the street, the one corner you love to try to drag on and the drunk @$$hole who ran up on the banking last night on the way home and put a bunch of garage on the corner will make your day ****ty real quick.

Only place to do this is on the track, where instrcutors are there to help and EMS is on site just in case.

If I was buying a starter street bike (which I may be in a few years, not yet, or else my parents will kill me) I'd get an early 90's CBR250. Those things are sweet. You have to get them imported from Japan (not sure how hard it is in the US, but there are plenty for sale up here in Canada).

The thing I like about them is that they rev up to 20,000 RPM! They sound exactly like an F1 car at that RPM, it's awesome. Plus they're cheap!

Whatever your most comfortable on, i been on a couple different bikes but keep coming back to the R6. Just what i feel the most comfortable on, and comfort will translate into trusting the bike.

Honestly if your just starting out a lot of people say a ninja 250 but prob your best bet if you want to get into track riding is an SV 650.

They are cheap have more power then a 250, tons of aftermarket parts for them. You can do a front end swap with a gsxr 600, to upgrade the forks and brakes.

If you don't do the front end swap atleast put new fork springs in for your weight and swap the rear shock with a zx-10. If you check out svrider all that info is over there.

If you want a 600 sport bike then just find what you feel best on. I started out on a R6, just respect the bike and the power and it will treat you good.

I have had lots of bikes over the years including 03 CBR F4i, 98 Ninja 250, 02 SV650, and misc cruisers too. IMO the SV is the best overall bike of them all. It is the only one I have kept and not sold.

Up to 2002 is regular carb, 2003 and up is FI.

There are 3 versions:
* SV650 = regular std handlebars, no fairing
* SV650S = clipons, half fairing
* SV650F = clipons, full fairing

Mine brand new was around $5k or so ...

I don't know that I agree. Numbers wise it should be able to take just about any vehicle on the road under 90mph. It might not feel like it driving it, but it can easily overtake any typical car on the road minus mustangs, corvettes, porsche, etc.

I would feel safer on a dual sport.........I have owned more bikes than some bike shops.............and the Ninja 250 is a death trap in my honest and experienced opinion. Period.

just get something cheap to start on and something that wont go down in value too much so you can sell it and get a 600 when you're ready. or just dont get into it at all and go find another toy. so much fun but its way too dangerous and its addictive, it scares me so much but i couldnt sell my bike. a 17 year old kid just crashed about 4 or 5 miles from my house last week and didnt make it :(

thats not good
ihave the mindset that a voring bike is better because you can improve since youalreay mastered it,and an xciting bikewill get you allcrazied up if you dont have the maturity and will end uptaking you for a ride.

You'll be amazed at how much you'll learn... I don't care if you've been on a quad/dirtbike your whole life, you will still learn...

On a side note I just picked up my first ever streetbike, and i'm 20. I got a 600 because I know that I can control myself not to be stupid, and that I know I won't find myself under-powered in a year or so.

I bet that black/grey looks pretty sexy... Do you have anything done to your R6?

I like the 600 as of now, I can see myself eventually moving up to a 750; but I doubt i'd ever go for anything higher. I like the maneuverability of the 600, and I hear the 750's are very similar.

I picked up an 02 CBR954rr last spring. Its been a blast to ride so far, feels a little smaller than my old CBR600f4 but with 30+ more rwhp. If you've never been on a bike before, get something small to start with, you can always upgrade later. Check out the Ninja 500 or Suzuki gs500, they would be a good starting point and pretty cheap too.

yea a gixxer 750 will be my next bike for sure. ive actually never rode one but i hear they are the handling of a 600 with 750 power.

and not really that much done to it, ASV flip levers, brand new front and rear conti attacks they're such a nasty tire, -1+2 vortex sprockets and 520 chain, hotbodies tinted windscreen.

i plan on getting a pipe and power commander this winter so i can hopefully get it down into the 10s, i ran 11.3 @ 127 last time with a pretty bad start

My bro went from a GSXR 600 to a 750 and loves it, says pretty much the same thing about a 600 with 750's power.

I need to look into a tinted windscreen, mine is lookin pretty fugly right now... But a 11.3 is better than I could probably do lol. How do you like your gearing now? I'm thinking of going down 1 in the front and seeing how I like it... Not sure if I will notice enough or not though.

yea im glad i did it, it doesnt make that big of a difference but the r6's have so much top end and not much bottom so it makes it a lot easier to wheelie
