welcome to the site. Im not really sure on the reverse and neutral deal. i hate to be the bearer of bad news to a first post cause i am not sure if it is bad news or not. lol ill break you in easy later. maybe a bit of adjustment on the clutch would help, at least that is where i would start. take some slack out of the cable. lol steve

Well... the neutral part... i am not sure.. probably makes me wonder is the tranny is good... no broken gears or mis adjusted clutch.... but reverse... DID NOT come on the 04's... they did that in 05... and afterwards... if you got it and was told it had it.. then the person lied...

i did and then when you go the clutch slips. Ive never messed around to much with this stuff but i work on cars for a living and im pretty good at figureing stuff out but its got me puzzeled. It was really loose when i got it so i talked to a couple people and looked a little online and adjusted the slack out took it it out and it would go but you could tell it was slipping and catching back up. Ive done nothing with the lower adjustment.....i ran the top all the way in and backed it out maybe 1/16th theres about 1/2" of up and down play in the clutch handle and fairly sloppy at the bottom and the clutch grabs and goes im a big guy and it will pull the front wheels off the ground goin into second. but still no reverse and you gotta shut it off turn the key back on kick it down and pull it back up for nuetuel. thanks for the help!!

But sadly... no reverse on the 99 to 04... honda started in 05 for reverse on the 400s... sucks... wish i had it...

The cable for reverse is down by the foot brake. If its adjusted properly shift into first, turn and hold the Knob on the front right fender, and shift down again..its like magic, if you ask me.

Highly doubt the tranny is fubar.. These tranys are pretty stout, to have one break with a tock 400?? Hmmm. Check the adjustment in the clutch..

BTW who the hell needs reverse :D

Alright so one time....at band camp, I was riding my 250r just messing around in first gear and my buddy came up on his 350 rancher and gunned it, so naturally I shifted in to second and gunned it. The second I stabbed the gas it sounded like a gun went off and I had a bad pain in my leg (forgot the riding boots). Long story short Second gear came through the case and hit me in the leg, leaving a pretty heathly bruise. I know its a random story but this thread was headed down hill anyway haha.:D

I don't know what you guys are talking about.
The reverse on my '03 works perfectly,
(as long as, when I stop, I'm facing uphill)
