Right now I'm at a loss, I've read about ppl on here that are running 18x10x8 on stock wheels, a stock tire size is 20x10x9 how are they running a smaller all around tire on the same sized wheel?

They aren't. The diameter of the wheel has to match the inner diameter of the tire (signified by the last number). You can run a different height tire, and a different width tire to some degree, but the mounting diameter must be the same.

20x10x9, 21x10x9, 22x11x9 and so forth. 9 is the wheel/rim size.

18" tall tires are readily available for the stock 9" wheel.

Your tire size choice really depends on what type of riding you do. Trails, mx, fire roads etc.....

I actually ride more trails than anything else but i still have 18s in the rear. I never really have problems with tire size or clearance. But then again down here in fl its mostly sand.

Just know that when you are selecting your rear tire size it will greatly affect the gearing of your quad and how it handles when trying to throw the back end out around a turn.

@OP. Are you looking for smaller tires,I ? bought a 400ex, and the rears are Maxxis Razr MX 18x10x9, with more then 85% of thread left.
i have to get the size of the fronts to be 100%. the guy who bought the quad before me, mostly ran on dirt and tracks, I am in the mud mostly and need a bigger tire to get through some of the tougher stuff. As well need ground clearance.
I am currently looking to buy bigger tires. I would be willing to see you the set that i have now.
Just pm me or let me know, i can send pictures and specs if you would like.

I mostly ride trails and I'm constantly crossing railroad tracks so the smaller tire wouldn't help me I was just confused when ppl wrote about havin smaller tires (18x10x8) on stock wheels

If anything I feel 20 inch tires are the best overall size unless your racing mx. They are tall enough for trails, handle well when sliding and dont tend to balloon.

My friend scored a set of razrs for 50 bucks (yes 50 for both) in 22s and they are like balloons and the rear tends to slide WAY to much imho.

20's are a decent trail tire, IMO.
I ride in constant rocks on the trails, and I had thought about going to 22's and dropping 1 tooth on the primary.

But after riding my wifes 250EX (which come stock with 22's), I don't think I'll be putting them on mine.
Way too much Balloon / Slide / and sidewall flex, causing a "Tippy" feeling in the turns.

This FORCES you to do one of two things...

Either hang yout butt off the inside of the seat, roll into the throttle, and start "Flat Tracking" it,....
or,
SLOW DOWN, so as not to flip it.

She always chooses the slow down choice, so 22's are fine for her. She does not ride aggresively at all.
She is just a putt-putt trail rider, and never wants to slide the tail end out, shoot roosts, do Donuts, or anything like that.
Counter steering is far beyond her concept, ability, or desire, when riding.

i am looking to get trail tires for my quad, and by reading it seems that 20x is the way to go so far,

but as for the front, is 22x to big ? or should i want that extra clearance up front. I saw some people riding on 21x, i know its only 1 inch different but who knows..

I have 22" razr 1's in front.
They handle pretty dang good.
I like having a taller tire in the front so its a little easier to hop the front end over logs & such.
A 21 or 23 inch tire might give your bike a slight rake because they are not the stock size (I think 22 in front is stock but correct me if I'm wrong)
Its all opinion though.

22's in the front are fine.

maxxis razr seem to only have 20x11x9 for the Honda 400ex, does the extra 1 inch of width throw anything off? or will it just be 1 inch wider?

shouldnt matter to much at all.

Personally everyone loves razrs so much, but I much prefer kenda kutter or klaw tires. I run klaw xcs and never had an issue on any terrain including sand.

Whatever you get tho-make sure its 6 ply rating, the 4ply ratings are to soft and will puncture easily for trail use.

yea i was just checking out the Kenda Klaw, people on here have definitely said great things about them. Also they are cheaper then the Razr2.
i will def check them out thanks!

No problem.

Whatver tire you choose its beter than the stockers. I found they didnt have hook up anywhere but hard packed dirt, slid on everything else.
