So i really like the 400ex. Even more after putting on the yfz 450 shocks. But its a little slow. I have a lexx slip on, open air box and its been jetted. I want a little more hp, but dont want to spend a ton. Otherwise i might as well get a 450 or 700 raptor. I would like to hang(not beat) 450s in a drag if possible. What would a stage 2 hotcam and gear it a little lower put me? what about i high compression piston in a 416? just looking for suggestions. Really dont want to tear into the motor if i dont have to. I know this topic is beat to death. So thanks for reading.

imo 416 and depending on which you like better, low/mid or mid/top stage 1/ 2, 450 carb. that would be a great machine for you and imo keep you happy for a long time still. thats what i would do. then if you want to rebuild it again, it is 200 for a piston and another bore to go to a 426. you will already have everything so it will be easy. steve

416, stg 2 cam, 450r carb, 11:1 piston.

I agree with the other two posters.

416 @ 11:1, stage 1 hotcam (think stock powerband but with a bit more midrange) or stage 2 hotcam (think 450ish powerband) , and 450r carb.

That should let you be able to keep up with stock 450's and maybe even run one down if the other rider isn't that good.

Agreed with the above replies.
I'd add to the suggestions with,
grind the headpipe welds, have it re-jetted again, (on a dyno by a reputable shop).

also, If it was me, I'd probably keep it at 10.5:1 for a few reasons.
1 less heat = more reliable & less chance of blown head gaskets
2- runs straight pump gas
3-less chance of pulling a head stud
4- can safely run a +6 timing key

but either way, you will still have a respectable machine, with whatever you choose to do.

Upgrades will def help but a lot comes down to the rider. My dad who has an 08 yfz 450 and i dragged this weekend after i replaced my carrier bearings. Out of the 4 times we dragged down the yard which is 2 acres.

He beat me once, i took him twice and we ran about even the last time. Thats with both of us getting up to 3rd gear, im sure in the top end he would walk away from me. But for a stock 400ex i have on complaints and plus its just for fun between him and I.

But really alot of it comes down to the launch, and how good of a rider you are. We were talking after and he noted how much quicker my shifts are then his.

Sorry my response doesn't help with the upgrades, but just a different view on the matter
