Im guessing this is bad. :eek2:

I don't use antifreeze. It has glycol in it and this will cause your engine to run hotter.

I use water and Red Line Water Wetter.

i use engine ice. works very good.

how does your plug look? you might be running really lean which makes it run way hotter. x2 on the engine ice good stuff. hope this helps.

I havent checked the plug but I suspect it is my fuel mixture I started running 20 to 1 and I think Im going to try 32 to 1. I thoght running 20 to 1 as stated on the tank would be a good thing but I dont think it is necesary

yeah man i always thought that was a joke ive never run lower then 32:1

I don't think that would make it run hot if anything you would just foul plugs. that 20:1 was for old oil tech it is much better now you can usually go by whats on the bottle. I run klotz benol @ 32:1 with great results. I still think you are way lean.

Fuel mixture has alot to do with jetting.

And jetting has alot to do with engine temps,

All I know is I ran 32 to 1 and jetting was spot on, 20 to 1 and know Im boiling. However I guess Im going to have to get a temp on there to see how hot it is getting, might be running a little lean. We will see. Dont want to do that again.

what made you go down to 20:1 from 32:1 just curious

TRUE!!

I was involved in a project designing a liquid-cooling system for computers, and I did a lot of research on cooling properties.

Glycol (whether ethylene glycol or propolyene glycol) protects against freezing, but it also REALLY kills the thermal efficiency of a cooling system. Just getting rid of the glycol in antifreeze will drop your engine temps by 10 degrees or so.

However, it's not just as simple as "get rid of the antifreeze". Along with the glycol, antifreeze also has corrosion inhibitors in it. If you run straight water, you'll corrode your system and turn it into scrap metal.

This is the beauty of products like Water Wetter. It has all the corrosion inhibitors necessary to your system, but doesn't have the glycol. It also has a component to reduce surface friction, which will improve the efficiency of your system even more.

Running water and Water Wetter, you'll probably see your coolant temps drop 15 degrees or so.

*Note: Water Wetter protects against corriosion, but it does NOT protect against freezing. If your quad is exposed to freezing tempurature, you MUST run antifreeze.

Watter Wetter (Tolytriazole PolySiloxane Polymer) has tendency to leave “slime” on the inside of rubber tubing. Siloxane polymer (the base of WW) is a SILICONE polymer which will permanently bond with most rubbers, like rubber hoses.

I don’t know if WW really works unless you are overheating; Water Wetter and similar products work by reducing or lowering the surface tension of the coolant, therefore; helping to keep air bubbles from forming and clinging to the inside of the radiator…giving you better coolant contact and increased cooling ability.

A product called “no-corrosion” mixed with distilled water or distilled water and an anti corrosive/rust inhibitor/water pump lube available at any auto parts and seem to work just as good…

Ok well the reason I decided to give 20 to 1 a shot was if 32 to 1 works good 20 to 1 should add more oil thus saving engine parts more, It was just a thought. I never tried 20 to 1 I noticed it on my tank and thought hey why not give it a shot. Im not doing that again.

My tank says 32:1 and is an 87. What year is yours. I've never heard of any bike manufacturer running this lean.

thats pretty crazy speedfreak cause all the 250r's ive ever seen had 20:1 stamped right on the gas tank so they must have used different ratios for different years?

My 86/87 and 89 say 20:1

Probably a few things happened, first a carb jetted for 32-1 will be ever so slightly leaner when you switch to 20-1.
The same amount of liquid passes thru the jets and you basically replaced fuel with oil thus leaning the motor.

Second if the weather was cooler and/or dryer than previous outings than you where leaner because of more oxygen in the air.
Warm air is thinner and high humidity displaces air.

by changing your mix, your now running less gas in it. more fuel = cooler

I'd go back to 32:1 ..or even jet it for 40:1
