Bumper

I have been looking at a the pics thread on this site. (great thread) Something I have noticed is the aftermarket bumpers, which made a question come to mind:

Why did you go with an aftermarket bumper? Was it purely for looks, or does it serve an actual purpose? Sorry if this is an absolute newbie question.

I bought the front bumper and nerf bars for extra protection just incase !! Well for the front bumper it has saved my back when i need to lift the bike and the nerf bars saved me from completely destroying the rear wheel and suspension. I crested over a steep hill was airborn and landed in some trees ,the nerf bar took the full hit of a tree and stopped the bike. I put a huge dent in it but saved everything else.
