Well I am officially a owner of my second R. It is an 86 and don't know much about it. Does not run yet. Needs petcock ( sorry if not spelled correctly ) put on and need to go over everything. 1000 paid for quad and parts. What do you guys think did I get a deal or no?

Not sure if these are stock or not but they have adjustments oto move shock in and out and attachments for roll bar or stabilizer or whatever its called lol

CODY_M11
09-18-2010, 08:47 PM
The attachments on bottom arms are for this thing lol. By the way this was a flat tracker. Also the guy I bought it off of said he swing arm wasn't stock so tomorrow more detailed pics of quad and swing ARM.

Here is quick pic of swing ARM. Sorry for glare its dark and flash caused it. Just interested in seeing if this is stock or not. Also the PIpe that is on motor is a pt and stamped on it it says 89 try race. Any one know about this PIpe?

Well that's all the pictures I have right now. More tomorrow and sorry for quality I took and posted pictures with my android. I hope I got a good deal. I am proud of It. Guy I bought it off of raced and this was there practice bike. I plan on tearing it down and restoring It to tip top shape and hopefully get into some racing again or have a screaming woods bike. If anyone is interested in any parts let me know I might do some trading.

Even though that pic is really messed up, I'd say that swinger is the stock unit fron an '85 ATC250R, same with the caliper. The 89 race pipe is one of Paul Turner's most popular. It's a mid-range pipe.

Your frame is an 87 Model

Here is a pic of bottom. Working on getting pictures of quad for everyone. Just got it up on stand. Does the white a arms look stock to you guys? What's stock length so I can measure them?

Thanks everyone

is it me or does the frame look tweaked? Either way good buy IMO. I would have picked it up.

I have the same arms as those white ones hanging in my shed and they look stock to me but they might not be. Mine just looks like it has the adjustable parts welded on to stock bottoms

i was just gonna say i might be high but that frame looks bent to me. look at where front bumper mounts if you look at the tube that spans the frame rails it looks crooked as hell and the whole quad seems to be pointed right

good buy but.......you will be very suprised how fast non running ex raced bikes eat money.

i agree with the other guys that the frame looks tweaked.

if you are looking for any R parts i'm in cleveland. pm me if you want/looking for anything.

I also thought frame was bent when I looked at the pic. Anyone have a frame? This one needs a lot of attention to motor area. Either way if frame is bent I think I got a good deal for all the parts. Ripped the motor out and going to go through it. I like these white arms lol.

CODY_M11
09-19-2010, 04:16 PM
Ok guys I got some pics to post and since my computer is crashed I have to post pics off my phone so it will take a while. Also I think I confirmed that the frame is bent. The shifter side nerf bar is closer to the rear tire than the right nerf. Again anyone with a frame please get in contact with me.

And again thank you all for your information and comments. R owners truly are a special group of people.

i think you mentioned that it was used for TT/flattrack right? If so thats what those arms are made for obviously. Definitely put the front of the bike down a good bit

CODY_M11
09-19-2010, 10:58 PM
Ya it lowered it a lot. I don't know if I want a trail xc bike or a tt flat bike. Would my 89 310 cylinder work on this motor?

THAT IS AN ATC REAR BRAKE SET UP, ON THE ATC IT IS ATTACHED TO THE SWINGARM INSTEAD OF THAT PURPLE BRACKET.

sure will

also dont worry about being a rookie. Any questions are always answered correctly on this site. Great group of guys. I learned everything I know from all of them

Ya everyone on here has been amazing and I can't thank you guys enough. So if I used the 310 do I just not use the spacer plate?

mineralgrey01gt
09-19-2010, 11:47 PM
is that a long rod or short rod engine? If its a long rod you use the plate, short rod you dont i believe is how that works. I only ran short rod engines so I never had to worry about plates.

CODY_M11
09-19-2010, 11:55 PM
Well I'm not sure. Any easy way to find out if it is short or long?

89trx250r
09-20-2010, 12:55 AM
a long rod will have a spacer plate between the top and bottom end usually 5mm's if it has no spacer its short rod

CODY_M11
09-20-2010, 08:04 AM
Wow I guess that was a pretty dumb question of me to ask lol.

SilverLake250R
09-20-2010, 08:11 AM
No it wasn't a dumb question...it may or may not have a spacer even if it has a long rod depending on if an '86 or '87-'89 piston was used. If it has an '86 piston (half-moon shape on intake side), it must have a spacer plate if it is a long rod, otherwise it is a short rod. If it has an '87-'89 piston (square window on intake side), then it will be a long rod...no spacer plate required. However, there are so many other engine modifications out there that might mislead you, but this will be correct 99% of the time.

Cool thanks for my R lesson today.

89trx250r
09-20-2010, 12:08 PM
i dont think any question is ever stupid cody especially if someone has something to gain from it see even i was only about 50% correct and i have a spacer plate motor but then a guy like silverlake comes along and clarifies even better

CODY_M11

Well I got the motor put back in and was planning on firing it up but ran out of time and had to go to work. Buddy was helping me and he broke the choke off of the carb so I had to steal the choke off a spare carb. Got the petcock on fuel tank and tried to put my pt high rev on and I'm not sure if its me but this pipe fits up weird. Is the high revs kind of a pain or just mine?

Another pic of silencer

mineralgrey01gt
09-20-2010, 11:13 PM
not all head pipes will work with the stock exhaust mounts or mounting points. My LRD pipe didnt and my bros ESR trx5 doesnt either.

That silencer kinda looks like an old Answer silencer to me? Or an older ESR silencer

CODY_M11
09-20-2010, 11:17 PM
WEll I made a bracket tonight for head pipe and trying it tomorrow. My girlfriend some how got a flat tire with brand new tires today so I have to take that down to my dads shop tomorrow and if I have enough time am going to try and fire the engine up. Hope everything works out for me tomorrow lol.

09-20-2010, 11:29 PM
lol good luck and post back and let us know how it went, this is seriously giving me the fever again to build me another R

CODY_M11
09-20-2010, 11:42 PM
Ya my plan is to completely tear down and rebuild/powder everything. I'm not sure on colors yet. I like the white and purple look the previous owners had going. Also thinking red and white. And seen a old wiseco sticker I have that's black and white and that got me thinking of those colors. Either way I want to keep white plastics and go to a white frame. What color scheme you guys like? Purple white black white or red white?

89trx250r
09-20-2010, 11:55 PM
dude black and white is classy but you have to make it not to much of one color cause black is hard to pull off without the right accents if that makes sense black is best friends with chrome and white imo

CODY_M11
09-21-2010, 12:02 AM
WEll I was thinking no matter what color I go with the engine is getting polished and all small parts that can be chromed will be. I don't know bout the red and white cause that scheme seems pretty common.

Well didn't get it running today. Put gas in it and tank leaks. DIdn't check if I had spark but didn't sound like I did. ALso saw I'm leaking trans oil. DIdn't look to see where from. AND leaking anti freeze. CAn anyone tell me what this hole in my head pipe Is for? O2 sensor maybe?

J.B.
09-21-2010, 01:48 PM
Um, don't think the R has an o2 sensor. Not sure what that is...

CODY_M11
09-21-2010, 02:21 PM
Well I know it sounds stupid but I swear I read on here somewhere about people putting some kind of o2 sensors in there pipes to help with jetting. Maybe I didn't I don't know lol.

89trx250r
09-21-2010, 03:23 PM
i think ive seen one o2 sensor but it was on a 4 stroke headpipe and it was like where the expansion chamber is on a 2 stroke pipe so idk what that hole would be doing there

CODY_M11
09-21-2010, 03:26 PM
I have no clue and neither did previous owner. He said the guys he got it off of used this pipe for tt and he took it off and never used it.

It's a bung for a temp sensor.....To dial in a two stroke (mostly the top end)and get all you can from the motor just install a temp sensor at the begining of the header pipe to jet your engine just below the point of melting aluminum...Which would be your piston! Much more accurate than a plug chop and you can locate the cool (rich) or hot (lean) spots in your jetting range!

X2 I got one on my 89.

CODY_M11
09-21-2010, 07:28 PM
Ok well I like the idea of a temp sensor. Can you guys give me a sort of parts list of what all I would need to buy to have a temp sensor system or what ever you want to call it?

hondamancbr03
09-22-2010, 12:10 PM
Just google EGT probe...Many models out there and I believe FTZ might have them as well. Jetting by EGT is not for beginers, I warn you to do your homework when using one. Not all bikes run at the same EGT.

CODY_M11
09-22-2010, 03:53 PM
Can some one explain to me the process of how you jet your quad from this?

cdrookie
09-22-2010, 03:54 PM
personally, i'd forget about the EGT sensor, and put the 89 race pipe back on, fits better and since it came on the quad it's probably jetted for it. it's an excellent pipe also.

if your still looking for a frame i have a stock 86 frame, swinger, stem, and arms. no damage or repairs. i'm a few hours away though.

CODY_M11
09-22-2010, 04:48 PM
Well the 89 pipe has been beat to crap and don't look like you can kick start it without smashing the pipe ( big dent already from kicker ) and the hi rev looks better. Send me a pm and if the price is right I might take a trip to pa and get that set up off from you.
