steering has slack in it

whenever i try to steer i have some slack before i actually turn the wheels. what do i do to fix that? i have an 02 big bear

Check your tie rod ends. They could be loose or worn out.

how do i know if its them?

You can hold onto them, and wiggle the handlebars back and forth. You will be able to feel if there is any play. Or if it's bad enough, you will be able to visually see the play.

if they are loose then is that an easy fix?

If the nut is loose, it's just a matter of tightening the nut. If the actual tierod end is worn out, you will need to replace it. Which is not hard. A set of wrenches, and about 20-30 minutes.
