I was wondering peoples recommendations on jetting I have a 99 400ex full HMF exhaust and a k&n air filter and mod air box lid. I was riding on Wayne today and I couldn't go past half throttle or it started to cut out which sucked Any recommendations will be highly appricaiated:confused:

155 or 158 depending on elevation. probably a 158 would be my guess since you have the lid off. leave the needle, go 3.5 turns out on the f/a and you should be good to go unless it pops on decel really bad. then go up to a 40 or 42 pilot and go 2.5 or so turns out. steve

Depending on the elevation I would start at a 158 and go up or down if needed. Where I live the elevation is around 200ft above sea level and i'm running a 155 main with the airbox lid removed and the stock exhaust. I'm also using a Keihin jet not a dynojet.

Well I live in ohio and right now i have a 48 pilet ande a 158 main jet and it pops like crazy on decel. I read on HMF's website and they recommend a 180-200 with a full hmf exhaust which I have so I was figuring a 180. I live in the hills here in ohio by the way Thanks

you have something wrong if you have a 48 pilot and have popping on decel. that is your pilot circuit and your f/a screw. you probably have to go out 1/4 turn or 1/2 turn on that to get it to go away. popping on decel is not your main. but you can choose to do whatever you would like to do. read some of the plug chop threads, do a plug chop or a few, learn a bit about reading plugs, what the symptoms are, and more. steve

i was figuring it was the main jet and neddle when it cuts out when i try to go over half throttle. it seems like it trys to choke its self out

that is different than popping on decel. try putting the choke on. see how it does. if it runs better you are too lean, even worse too rich. then you know which way to go. if it is over 1/2 then it is probably your main. you wont be needing a 180 thats for sure. steve

i think the choke might be sticking but idk with it on it sucks even worse. So how much on the main jet my buddy thinks my pilot jet is to big but idk and there is a little bit of white smoke coming from the exhaust

i would say that nothing over a 42 is needed without going to around 1-1.5 turns out on the f/a with the 48. what are you actually at right now? steve

http://www.jetsrus.com/FAQ_rejetting.htm

read that and this

http://www.jetsrus.com/FAQ_spark_plugs.htm

once you do that and look at your plug a bit to see how it is doing, then you can start to diagnose which way to go. i cant just shoot in the dark to help you nor can anyone else. you have to see how it runs at each part of the carb not just in one part. they all have to mesh together to run properly. you could go to the 4th clip on the needle that will richen the mid range of the carb. it could solve your issues but without knowing if your main is good then there really is no reason to do anything. steve

also see this chart on this thread

this will help to show you where you are working with, carb placement wise. steve

bummer on the machine. just keep your eye on the prize. it will be great once done. :D both of those tires are great also. razrs are my tire of choice but there are many tires out there that are great too. really depends on what you like the design of lol. steve

well i tore into the carb and my pilot jet isn't a 48 its a 38 and it had a little piece of dirt in it...now my settings are 160 main and 38 pilot and 1 1/2 turns f/a and it just throws white smoke not sure about the needle

honda400ex2003

nice. make sure you go out to around 2.5 to 3 turns out on the f/a that is too lean on the pilot for sure. when is it smoking white? maybe go to a 162 or 165 if you have it on your main and see how it does. steve

also do one change at a time to see if it makes a difference. steve

all the way through the throttle

im a firm believer in that white is moisture since there is no anti freeze in there. anyway some have lean conditions with white smoke also so try out a 165 in there. maybe even a 170 if you have it just for kicks. your pilot is really lean at the moment so you can fix that also FIRST and see how it runs after that. lol steve

ok so u r saying putting a bigger main jet might eliminate it being lean....i just took the f/a screw to 3.5 turns and it wasn't as white if that helps any

def go to a bigger main from the 160. go 165 or 168 and see how it does. keep going up till it goes away. steve

when mine was stock with all the same mods except i had a slip on instead of a full exhaust. i ran a 42 pilot 2 - 2 1/2 turns out and a kehin 165 main. ran great!
