01 300ex does not like to start off the starter pop starts fine

ok so i bought a 01 300ex off craigslist for my GF to ride, it will sometimes fire right up no problem with the starter button, other times it will just crank and crank. but if you pop start the quad it fires right up no problem.

honestly im kinda stumped on this one. originally i thought it was a fuel prob, so i cleaned the carb, i did a full tune up on it, new fluid, filter and plug.

does it start better when it's warmed up?

Tight valves will cause this problem.

nope it can be warmed up after riding for like an hour, then i will turn it off and it wont start off the starter. if bump started it will fire right up.


my buddy said maybe a starter clutch? it cranks over like it wants to start and wont. pop start it and it fires right up no prob.
