i have a 400ex now and its my baby list of mods are fmf powerbomb header with fmf powercore 4 pipe, amr stage 3 rev box, k&n filter, and dyno jet kit. what im looking to possibly do is put a 426 kit in it and a stage 2 hot cam. but i go back and forth and doing that to my 400 or getting a 450r and putting a full exhaust system, filter ( eather k&n or uni) and hrc competition kit in it. So my question is if i put the 426 kit and the cam in my 400 would it be anywhere comparable to the 450r with the mods listed? your input would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Not comparable but I have a 440 with a slip on but no cam or key. Bottem end I can keep up with 450's but once I hit 3rd gear they start to pull on me in drag races...on the track I can keep up until we have a long straight and then they normally pull on me by about 3-4 lenths...

if you had a cam it would be much better. imo the 426 is very comparable to a 450. depending on how it runs, it will def eat a stock type of 450. my 416 would easily beat the 450 i ride with every now and again. I havent lined them up since we were on the trails but after riding both, i would put money on mine winning in just about any situation. although it is a tough decision cause a 450 is cutting edge and can really be made into a much faster machine with the same work done to the 400. if you took the 600 or so it would cost to do a nice 426 and put it in a 450 it would run very good. it can push 50 hp pretty easy where a 400 is maxed out around 40 hp without some major major work. it is possible but man, the $$ would be unreal compared to the same in a 450. it really depends on how much you like your 400. if you would like a race bread ride it like you are racing type machine, the 450 will be for you, if you want a great all around machine, keep your 400 and add some to it. steve

If it was the 426ex vs. a stock 450r then yeah the 426 ex would win, but a 450 with those mods would smoke it. Id still keep the 400ex though. Id much rather have one over a 450 imo.

People are so concerned with power and beating a 450. Personally speaking 400ex is cheaper to maintain, initially buy and mod. It wont beat a done up 450-but how many really have done up 450s?

Drags are cool too, but just cause your friends 450r is faster than your 400ex-so what?

I coulda bought a 450r, it needed a new ignition setup (missing key), rear bearings and a few other things but it ran strong. I coulda had it for 300 bucks but already had a 400 (and I knew it was stolen, dont ask its a long story). Coulda mated it with my 400 tho and had an awesome machine..but im happy with the 416 w/stg 2 hotcam. More than enough power for me.

450r all day. No comparison on the engines really IMO. The 450 engine has 20+ years of technology over the RVFC design.

Also depends on what type of riding you do.

I went from a 03 400ex/416 to an 07r. stock my 416 was just about the same as the 450. 400 bucks into the 450 and now the r will walk all over the 400. Go with the 450 youll be very happy.

Well for me the riding i do is alot of open trails where your in high 4th gear or sometimes even 5th in some spots and alot of motocross tracks where i would like to have the extra power to be able to very confidently clear a long double comming out of a turn, not so much the drag racing for me although my buddy has a raptor 700 and i would like to stay on him a little better than my 400 does but mostly im just looking for the more power for the track and trails

You can run with them if you set the bike up right.
Thing you will need to do, so you can run with them.
1) Get the head p&p
2) Get a stage 2 h/c
3) Get a 450r carb 04-05 will go right on or get the 06 and up.
4) A good pipe
5) Get the 426 or the 440 kit go with 10.5.1 to 11.0.1 comp.
6) now you are ready to run with the 450's and 700 raptors.

My dad picked up a left over 08 yfz 450, don't get me wrong its a great quad and very fast but i wouldn't take it over my 400ex.

I like the feel of the ex better over his 450 plus the amount of heat that kicks off the pipes is enough to have a pig roast.

Like others said i would spend a few hundread on my ex before i spent a few grand on a 450. JMO

which everway you go im sure you'll be happy. i look at it this way, some people can't handle the power and torque of the 450's. it takes alittle getting use to but once you do, you will never go back to a 400. :D

The 450's are not that great stock over a well done 440 or 460.
So how can you say some people cant handel the power and torque ? just asking cuz some one must not know much about a well done atv.

The 400EX was not made to be a race bike.
It was made to be a trail bike with moderate power. It's simple, air cooled low maintenance SOHC engine is what it is.....OLD SCHOOL.

BUT, it is an awesome bike to ride, it's well ballanced, easy to maintain and is easily modified.

450's are designed to be race bikes.
They have high output engines that can be very demanding to maintain.
They get VERY hot. They demand more regular oil changes.
They require engine rebuilds more often.
They quite often have gearbox problems.

If you want a race bike, get a 450. Otherwise do what I do.....

I am sticking to my 400 EX for all the reasons above.
I get beat all the time by DS650's a YZF450 a rappy 700 and a LTZ400 with 440 kit, BUT I DON'T CARE!!!

I like my 400 EX with a few engine mods, it feels good to ride, it's heaps of fun, and anyway, someone has to be last!
