sunday im heading over to look at a 2005 450r and hopefully buying it. we've settled on $3200, looks to be in pretty good shape, she says it leaks a little bit of oil at the case when its running, doesn't have nerfs, has stock rear tires pretty bald, and same with fronts but they are some kind of mud tire. the headlight was removed along with the tail light. it has full HMF exhaust system

here is the link http://hamilton.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-ATVs-snowmobiles-ATVs-NEW-2005-Honda-TRX-450r-W0QQAdIdZ226410498

is there anything i should check that is known to go wrong on 05's?
i've got a 01 440ex for sale, so i know to check for the carrier bearings, aarms, make sure the engine's cold, oil, filter maybe.

Thanks

Check the oil for metal shavings.

yea i listed that already ;p
thanks anyway. are the 05's known for having any engine problems that would cause metal shavings in the oil??

thanks

Just check the usual stuff, air filters, ball joints, you know. If there arn't metal shavings in the oil, then it shouldn't have any problems

ive seen cleaner bikes for less money, try and find out where the leak is coming from, if its from the case and needs new gaskets that can be expensive to pay someone to tear it down if you cant do it yourself

honestly i would try and find something a little nicer, i bought a bone stock 05 3 years ago for 3900 and it was on its 3rd tank of gas, mint.

That looks like a 2500 dollar bike, especially with a leaky case

You spend 3200 and your gonna need new tires soon, thats 200 bux more or less, then depending on what is leaking it can be 300+ to have someone split the cases and install new gaskets. so now youve spent 3700 and it still might need other parts. You can get ALOT nicer quad for 3700 bux

yea i understand i could find something nicer for a better deal, but the money issue is the problem. i may be able to get a 07 or something for 3900 but i cant spend that much. thats the problem. im 17 and have a part time job with little hours.
and from what i hear, the leak isn't bad at all, she says its still rideable without fixing it.
and no way is that a 2900 dollar bike, around here quads are EXPENSIVE, unless i get a predator, but they're a lot of money to repair and everyone my buddy has know with one have all dropped valves and fried the motor.
but anyway, its the only 450 i can find that i can afford, especially when most 450's here, even stock are going for over 4grand.
this is one time i wish i DID live in the states :ermm:

Go there, then try to talk them down on the price. That is too much $$$$ for a average 2005. :eek2:

Agreed... TOOOOO much for that bike. With it leaking oil from the case I wouldn't pay more than 2 grand for it... That's if the rest of it was MINT and from the sounds of it it isn't... Where are the $1000 dollars in Mods? A pipe and a set of handle bars are not $1000 in mods. Replacing breaks and bushings is common maintenance not upgrades. Also those aren't mud tires on the front, they look like stock Yamaha tires.

And what does "do not have ownership" mean? Does that mean that there's a lean on the bike and they still owe money? That's illegal here... The bank can report it stolen if the original owner stops paying the bill.

PASS PASS PASS!!! Bad deal. Keep looking, you'll find a better one.

alright, thanks guys. emailed em back, im getting it for 3000 now.

i wasn't sure on those fronts, all i knew is that they weren't stock, but they kind of looked like the mudlites some guys put on there quads :/

and i looked around up to 5 hours away from me, and there is no 450r for less then 4000, i found a few 04's for 4000 but like i said, around here, ATV prices are HIGH, pretty much stock 450r 06's or so are around 4500 bucks. i have been looking pretty much daily for quads for the past 3 years or so, ever since i started looking for one, got a 300ex, and kept looking, sold it, got my 440ex and really haven't stopped looking around at whats for sale, and 450s have always been 4000 and higher. and the $4000 450's are usually in rough shape, ridden hard, dirty.....

so as it stands...im going sunday, taking a look at it, riding it, and as long as the case isn't damaged or cracked, or leaking more then i have in mind, im going to try and talk my way down to like 29 or 2950.

I paid 3500 for my 05' over 3 years ago and it was in mint condt at the time. There's no way i'd pay more than 2500 for that. I'd wait for something else to come along if they won't come down on price :o jmo

Quads are expensive here in Ontario. There are tons of 04/05 R's around here that guys are wanting over $4000 for that don't have any thing more than just a pipe and nerf bars. I would make the trip across the border and buy something in the US. Its not really difficult at all if you buy one with a title. As a reference for our US friends dealers still want $8500 for an 09 450R. Our dollar is pretty much a parity. Who do you think is getting screwed!

I would also make sure that you can get an ownership for the 450R. Call the MTO and see if you can get it with a bill of sale from someone else. You might have a few issues there. My $0.02.

100% agree with you there, but all my buddys have gotten a bike across the boarder and everyone of them say they would never do it again.

how would that work?

Go into a licensing office and tell them your situation with buying this quad. The will be able to tell you if you will have issues getting an ownership. I don't think any dealership in Ontario would sell a quad without registering it in the name of the buyer. If it from a dealer in the US or any other province you could have issues. I would be a little cautious about this. Without an ownership you can't get insurance and it will really limit you on where you can ride.

well, around here you can ride pretty much anywhere. i mean there are the spots where most everyone goes to ride, but its just opoen to everyone, no cops, nobuddy in charge.

what about telling if its stolen or not? are they allowed to tell me if i give em the VIN??

dlunn

MTO can do a search of the VIN to see if it was registered. Don't quote me but by law without ownership/insurance you can only ride on land you own.

okay, so MTO cant tell you if it was stolen or not eh? but if u go to register it and it is stolen, it shows them, no?

If it was never registered in Ontario I don't think that they would be able to tell if it was a stolen quad or not. I would see what the guy selling it has for paperwork and give it a day or so to check all the info out. The last thing you want is to purchase the quad and find out it was stolen or you are unable to register it in Ontario. I used the second link when I was buying a used quad in the states. One that i was going to buy came up as a theft, and the seller knew nothing about it. He's in court now trying to get his money back. I just don't want to see you get screwed.

I BOUGHT it, $2900, the leak isn't even there. sounds sick. and i checked the VIN and no records were found
he hadn't started it for 2 or 3 weeks and it only took i think 4 kicks to get it goin.
just need to get rear rims and nerf bars for it now.
