I'm having some problems with my fan. whenever it comes on it only comes on to about half speed, or it just flickers. it may be at just the right temp to do that, but could it be going out? is that a common thing to flicker? also how do you test it? thanks

well to test the fan, since you have 04-05 bikes, just take the wire that goes to the temp sensor on the head and ground it, this will run the fan all the time. You can leave it that way if you want to. i have my fan running full time

Yes, motor needs to be running. Your fan is probably going out. That's normally what they do before going completely out.

so your saying the sensor usually goes out and then the fan goes

no he was referring to the original poster who said his wasnt running full speed and cutting out. On your fan, my guess is thats its fine and it just wasnt hot enough to turn on, or you didnt notice it turn on.

pull out the sending unit and clean up the threads and sensor real good, there might be just enough oxidation on it, to not allow a good ground

does anyone have a picture of where it is, i have an idea. but like i said, got the quad sunday, and its the first one i have owned thats liquid cooled.
is it located at the front of the head?
and once i get that off, all i have to do is round it to see if the fan works?

also i just got an 08 left over and i haven't notice the fan turn on even if i let it idle for like 5-10 minutes

Yes, it's the only wire that goes to the front of the head. The cooling systems on these machines are very efficient. It's very rare for the fan to come on, even when idling.

hey i know this sounds crazy but check the cdi box. my fan was acting really weird and im not kiddin it was the cdi that was causing the issue.

well i just grounded the wire an the fan is still good. but everythime i ground the wire the oil light comes on. is it supposed to do that? i'm jw becasue i'm not going to run the fan at all times anyways. but could something else be bad an cause it just to flicker? i'm going to try an change the coolant an see if the fan will come on all of the way.

i also just checked mine when i was out riding, and the fan came on. so i guess the sensor is bad and the connection is loose too.
so do i need a new sensor, or just a cleaner connection?

thanks

Thats not the oil light, it is the Temp light and it came on because the wire is grounded. What the temp sensor does, is when the coolant hits a certain temp, it grounds the circuit, which turns the fan on and puts the temp light on, to let you know that your getting hot.

and 440ex. im not sure if your understanding this correctly, your fan is working, are you sure your coolant just isnt hot enough for it to turn on without manually grounding it? it needs to be pretty hot before it turns on normally. I would clean all the connections first, then try a sensor if it still isnt working. Everything else in your system is working if it turned on when you grounded the wire

oh sorry, i meant to say also that once i grounded it and then hooked it back up to the sensor it would **** off and then kick in again, and it did it continuously for a minute or so and then stopped.
