the EPA had a part in it, but the consumer had a much bigger part. EPA said something that after 07 or 08 2 strokes only can be for a closed course. This got rid of the 2 stroke atv's. By this time the 4 stroke dirtbikes became so popular and it didn't hurt that they were being pushed by the makers and that is all of what was being raced also. Its kinda like monkey see-monkey do. Its the same thing with 250r's now, for 86-04 they were the only atvs worth racing and almost every variety of them were raced. In 04 yamaha and honda had the 450 quad, 05 the pro production rule came out, not soon after the 250r chassis and motor was banned in every pro class, except one or 2. Now almost everywhere, you don't see a 250r and the new riders(last 5-6 years) don't even know what one is. Same thing with the 2 stroke dirtbikes. 4 strokes being pushed, only racing 4 strokes, 2 strokes disappearing from the showroom and after several years, nobody wants a 2 stroke, so they stop making it. The only place where 2 strokes are still big is with enduro and hare scrambles(gncc included). Ktm and husky are just about the only 2 strokes you see also, yes there are some racers using a yamaha of kawi, but its slim in numbers.

The new 4 strokes must have helped the income in the dealer's shops considering how often they have to be rebuilt.

It's just surprising seeing these 2 stroke tune pipes now a days isn't it? It's become so uncommon.

I saw some numbers a little while back about pollution, and it surprised me a little bit.

A 250cc 2-stroke motor puts out about 10 times the pollution at a modern V8 engine. That's not to scale, that's not per cubic inch or anything, that's the total. 350 cubic inches compared to 15.25 cubic inches (250cc), and the 15 cubic inches puts out ten times as much pollution.

If you DID compare per cubic inch, the 350ci V8 motor is about 23 times bigger in displacement, so per cubic inch, the 2-stroke motor pollutes 230 times as much.

i think diesel lets soot out which falls to the ground so it's not as bad. the other day i went to the honda/yamaha shop and on all of them they had tags that had a scale 1-10 and showed how much it polluted.

so it is all right if it just falls to the ground?
