This is the stock fittings, like i said before you have to grind the clamps to seperate these from the stock rubber hose, pretty simple to do just wear your goggles

These particular two come from the hose that runs from the bottom end of the motor to the bottom of the oil tank

A 8AN SS Braided hose fits pretty snug over these two fittings, rubber ones more snug than teflon ones

you will need 1/2" worm clamps to seel them on, or atleast that is what i used

im going to be uploading alot of pics on this thread, so they will keep coming

This is the same two stock fittings with 8AN SS rubber hose on it

There is 2 Worm Clamps sealing each fitting

This is what i used to cut my hoses to my desired length

keep in mind guys whenever you are building custom hoses, you need to do a mock up

i put the stock fittings in there spots, then laid the hose across them to see what length i needed, dont just go cuttin ****, cuz you might cut it to short then you will have to get another hose!

This is the line that goes from the bottom end of the motor to your right side of the oil cooler

the picture is color coded to show you the different pieces

this line ues a stock fitting that goes to the motor, a 6AN line fits snugly over it and clamped with two worm clamps

I used a 6AN line from siliconeintakes.com on this one, the inside is made of teflon equivelant material

the 8AN to 6AN reducer connects the 8AN Female 2 Female to the 6AN adaptor

The female to female connects to the 8AN outlet on the cooler

This is the line that goes from the top of the oil tank(obviously) to your left side of the oil cooler

it utilizes the stock fitting that goes to the top of the tank, and a 8AN SS braided line fits over it snugly with 2 worm clamps

the line runs to the 8AN adaptor that connects to the oil cooler

This black piece is the bracket i made to connect it to the stock mounting points, i just used some cheap sheet metal and cut it to fit, i still need to make brackets to secure it from the bottom

The pink circles is where it is bolted to the cooler

The yellow circles is where it bolts to the stock points on the frame

The white circles are the mounting tabs that hold the spal fan onto the cooler

I might make another bracket the same shape again outta better metal tom.

This is my entire cooling system, the black hose is a stock hose that runs from the top of the tank to the valve cover

+1 Quart CFM aluminum oil tank

8AN and 6AN SS braided hoses

CXRacing Oil Cooler---Core size is 9.75x5x2 inch

5.2" SPAL Puller fan

This is the cooler mounted to the frame

the white circles show where it is bolted up, i also have a rubber grommet inbetween the frame and the bracket

ya no problem man, just send the address to me and i will send the trace in the mail

for the cooler go to ebay and look up the CXRacing store, they have all kinds of coolers, but i say you get mine, look at the specs on the 10 Row aluminum coolers because they are all different

get the one with a core size of 9.75x5x2 inch it fits perfect in the spot, and you can put the bigger fan on it

for the fan go to ebay and look up 5.2" spal fan, make sure you get the puller

I actually spent about $300 dollars on everything, give or take

i played hit and miss on some of the hoses and adaptors so that cost more

so in reality i spent about $350, but you wouldnt have to because i did the dirty work and figured out what stuff works

ok how much bigger is this cooler over the stock unit? doing my 440 build and the cooler the better. have you had any issues with leaking from the hose clamps?

Awsome project! Can you send a 'trace' of your bracket to me, as well?
Final thickness would help as well!

So is my bike, Bud.
You tell'in everyone on here 400EX's are not a popular machine? Or, parts are not available?

I think he's trying to say that the OP isn't going to reply very fast if he even does at all.

Exactly... relax. no need for the attitude

I would also like to see a trace or pattern for this bracket.
I have sent a PM to the OP asking if he might be able to come back to this thread and provide one.
Many old threads are worth bringing back to the top of the list occaisionally.
There is often lost threads, great idea's, experience, and mods, that other new comers have not seen, read, or are aware of, and can benefit from.

Hopefully, the OP will see my PM, and return to provide the details, as well as his report of how this has been working for him.

Another thing I'd like to see on this forum, is for us to have a way to save a "favorites list" of threads/links, that we each find to be informative and useful.

A favorites list is definitely a good idea. I subscribe to threads I like, but I get a ton of emails every time there is another post in the thread. I don't necessarily want to know when there is a reply, just an easy way to keep track of what I would like to look at in the future.

I had the same problem i would get like 40 emails a day but now for some reason i don't get any emails so idk what went wrong.

You should do it :)

So, this cooling system is actually still untested.. I was in the progress of the build 4-5 years ago, but wasn't able to finish it.. I've since picked the project back up and plan on finishing the bike withing a few months. My guess is, this will be the gnarliest air cooled system ever installed on a 400EX.

05-08-2015, 11:37 AM
I like this setup a lot. Always wondered why the 400EX didn't just have a radiator sized oil cooler in the first place?

I like the way you did the bigger tank and larger cooler with good sized fan.
