View Full Version : My TRX90 KOQ build

airmobile101

I'm slowly putting this thing together. Not in a super hurry since we have until Feb. when our series kicks off again. Nothing flashly, Brand new 2009 TRX90X getting a KOQ LT suspension. I decided to go with Tom's stuff mainly for what we race. My son and myself race harescrambles/XC. I'll leave a review of this once the bike is complete.

Ok..... One of the reasons I at least wanted to tackle this now is because the front end requires 14" front shocks, but I have some Float 14.5" shocks I'm gonna try. If it doesn't work, they will be sent down to Dirtworks Motosports to be shortened. All the components I'm gonna use is from a 2007 TRX450ER. I do have a 400EX parts bike on back-up if something doesn't work out.

Ok, 450r spindles don't work. Well..... It does, but it really limits the travel. I had a Z400 spindle laying around and tried that. Much better! Needless to say, one thing I don't have is 400ex spindles........ To be continued.....

airmobile101
09-06-2010, 11:47 PM
Ok, this isn't going according to plan. My back 400ex ended up being fixed, then I though I might have another off craigslist, but the guy bailed on me. geeaazzzzzzz............

grrrrr........ Ok, I got the 400ex entire frontend in the mail today. The 400ex spindles bind up the balljoints also. Maybe its just me????? I didn't spend much time with it since I have a race in the morning. I'll tinker with it on Monday when I'm off work. I'll also post a pic to give everyone an idea what I'm talking about. I also have some Z400 hubs coming also. So if I can't get the travel I want without the bind, then Ill toss on the Z400 front end.

I'm sure it is Tom. It just appears that way. I will know for sure once I get the wheels installed.

airmobile101
09-13-2010, 06:16 PM
Ok, wheels are installed. Everything is fitted loose, so naturally the camber, and toe is out of wack. Plus the brakes and tie rods are not installed. What your looking at is the 450r front end on this. The 400ex spindles and stuff I might try tomorrow. I will also give a shot at the Z400 frontend once the front hubs arrive.

For sure.
You shouldn't use those heims to achieve your desired camber settings. Use those for the caster and if possible use your ball joints for the proper camber settings. But with this style of upper A arm. That is not possible.
Just keep an eye on the heim joint for bending. The upper A arm doesn't produce much load, but it is possible to have those heims fail because they are sticcking out that far.

That's what I was thinking too. Looks like bringing them in would fix that problem and take some tension off of them as well.

Guys, its just slapped together at this point. Nothing is even tightened down yet. Thats why the helms are sticking way out on top. I barely have them threaded in.

I'm gonna stick with the 450r frontend. I did some tweeking last night and got everything looking good. No more binding.

airmobile101
09-14-2010, 11:13 AM
Frontend is pretty much done with the exception of me notching out the area for the tie rod ends to clear and these bad boys:D

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm242/TimmyRuark/001-3.jpg

airmobile101
09-14-2010, 01:58 PM
Ok, had to do a little grinding instead of the notching. The tie rod end was catching the frame. Simple fix. Took my Dremel to it and maybe removed 1/16 of material off.

I was under the assumption that I had 450r brake pads. Well I don't !!!!!!! Had to order some, so I'm done for the day. Beer time!

I also ordered his numbers today from BRM Offroad. Should look pretty sweet when this all comes together.

We just used a washer under the inner tie rod end to shim it up so it doesnt rub. Looking good!

Ok, I'm a night bird and I work nights. So I got bored @ 3AM and I decided to throw on the 450r calipers. The brake pads are shot, but I needed to swap the steel braided lines around and re-bleed it. This thing is gonna be bad ***!

Swamp, This thing is running me in cost every bit as much as my DVX400 and my 450R to build. As of right now, I am a tad bit over $5000.00 including the bikes price. So if I keep this under $6000.00(which I should), then I will be happy!

I got some No-Toil stock filter laying around. So I plan on opening up the asre end of this thing, but leave enough on the cage to were I can still use the clamp system.

Yea, its been kinda a last minute hustle with this thing. Everything is getting tossed on for fit. If you noticed, that lovely LSR carrier has a lovely rusted grease zirk.......... Something I need to attend too. Axle is dirty, aluminum needs cleaned, etc.....

Still waiting on a few things at the moment. 400EX swing chain guide, UPP Banshee rear chain guide, 400EX/450R brass bushing. Rebel Gears rear sprocket(50T) DG nerfs. And a big bore kit from a certain person.Damn Ohio people slacking! roflmao!

Things I got today, Rath bumper, D.I.D. STANDARD NON- ORING CHAIN, and a LSR Parking brake blockoff plate.

Tom, I will call you tomorrow. I have zero freaking clue to how this master cylinder brackets are suppose to mount up???? Granted, I was gonna try a 450r master cylinder, but hell........... I have no idea just how to install the brackets!

Tomorrows game plan, gonna try powdercoating the rear hubs and the bumper. I might hold off on that until I get the quad totally built.

Ok, I just got done putting the front bumper on and all I can say was that was a biatch!!!!! We went with the Rath bumper mainly because thats what my son wanted to use again, but it sucked installing. After spending a few hours jacking with it and still not able to line up the holes of the frame, upper a-arm bracket, and the bumper, I decided to cut a piece of 2x4 and wedge the damn thing into the bumper to widen the mounts on it. Simply amazing, it all lined up once I did that. Make sure you loosen the u-bolt clamps also, that also helped.

Ok, I mounted the rear 450r brake caliper, but I'm still waiting on the CR125 slave cylinder. Also, Im having an issue with the chain lining up with the front and rear sprocket. I have some spacers that I tried and they will work and lines it up nicely, but my bolts wont clear the LSR carrier, so I have to wait until the OEM sprocket bolts arrive.

Don't know if you can see it in the pic or not, but I shot a laser directly down the center of the chain starting with the front sprocket. It was off by over a 1/4". Granted, maybe its something that I did wrong with the swinger install, or the LSR carrier doesn't like a stock 400ex axle..............lol

With the spacers installed. Need to get a 50mm bolt so I can install the sprocket guard. And I also need to find a steel rear sprocket. One hour of non-stop racing will destroy that aluminum sprocket in a heartbeat.

Hi did you say you used a 450 brake and carrier? with a 400ex axle? there is a 1/8 inch difference between them, one is 6 1/4, and one is 6 1/8 check to see if this is correct for chain alignment, also you need to put your front slide on, and level the swing arm to check the adjustment. if you have a question on anything give me a call

Good news the nerfs came in along with all the other stuff minus the rear CR125 master cylinder. The bad news......... I need 2005 and earlier footpegs...... Still waiting....... Oh, positive note, the exhaust header clears the nerfs, so no modding the nerfs to make them fit:D

Well...... after jacking with this rear brake cylinder mount for over two hours today, I decided we are just gonna run a hand brake for the rear brakes. Can't get the brackets to line up for crap. I tried a 05 450, 03 cr125, and a 2004 cr125 rear master cylinder.

The end result is the same with all of them. Either the top bracket isnt long enough or the bottom bracket drops the pedal wayyyyy to low. I cant even get both brackets mounted with the cylinder at the same time.

Maybe the 2006 and newer have a higher mounting point for the rear plastic were the top bracket is suppose to mount???????

Take it everything worked. I have a new one of those vents to get rid of too. Forgot the Outlaw side cover is vented to airbox when I ordered everything. Don't cut that too short. Dan says his pukes some oil.

airmobile101
12-01-2010, 08:29 AM
Its suppose to puke oil. Its gonna get ran to the chain for extra lube:D Well.... I had to use that piston from you. I tried the DRATV 54MM HC piston, but I wasn't able to get the damn cam chain back on with a stock head and all the extra base gaskets.
So I ran the TB piston and I think I could have gotten away with running no base gaskets on it at all. I ran a 2mm piece of solder in the spark plug hole and manually turned the engine over with no clearance issues. Ohhh well.........

We ran DG nerfs. We had to run older style foot pegs for them to work. The newer models have the footpegs installed on the floor boards. And that doesn't work.

fyi......... we have been very pleased with Tom's LT setup. This is by far the best bang for the buck since its narrower than any other LT TRX90 kit on the market. Does it need tweaking??? Yes,but thats with any aftermarket part for the most part.

so you ordered dg nerfs for a 04 and older trx90? I like the way they look..I ordered a set of dg's but they dont come around the back side of the foot peg like that..And the foot pegs were off a 04 and older?

They are built exactly like an adult pro peg, and not like other mini nerfs out there, that don't fit the bigger kids, at a much lower cost, then the adult prices.
