Anybody ever SEEN a Ranger with a 302 stuffed in it? Ive heard it can be done but never actually seen it. Ive got the 2.3L 4 banger right now and I've heard the 5.0's fit but i'm a bit skeptical haha. Also, if it fits, how much you think the whole swap would cost if I did most of the work by myself and a few buddy's. I can't even imagine how bad@$$ it would be!!!

Thanks.

They make kits for it. I dont know much about it except its a lot of time and a lot of money. Some guy at my work was looking into doing it.

I saw it one time. Right out of high school and into college I did a 355 SBC in an S10 and it was way fun.

Powerblock put a 4.6 in a Ranger. They're upgrading it to basically the same motor in the 03/04 Cobra.

Sure it can be done, rather easy since they make kits for it.

You want to look up advanced adapters website, they willsell the adapter plate you need so the 302 bolts to the transmission in your truck. Painless performance should have all the wiring parts you need.

Just google it, its a common swap.

Its not a bad swap to do at all. Heres a link to my 302 ranger. http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=444779&highlight=ranger

Years ago Summit Racing built a blown 454 tubbed S-10. It sat in their store in Tallmadge, OH for quite a while.

Wow guys thanks for all the info. jrspawn thats a pretty slick lookin truck. bagged trucks aren't really my cup of tea but I can tell you did a good job on that one. So including engine, adapter, wiring and everything, about how much would i be looking to spend? I'm probably going to sell my 400ex to help fund this. I just dont get to ride it ever anymore and it's not doing me any good sitting in the garage.

Expect to spend at least 3-5k between buying the engine and getting everything done unless you can do all the work yourself.

Check out the rangerstation.com. Lots of good info over there.

if it was me i would probably find a foxbody mustang and convert everything over to your truck. if your putting out much power you will need to replace your transmission too.

this is a good idea. Use the rearend, tranny, and motor out of donor fox and you will be good to go.

If your truck is an auto, you should grab a c-4/6. If it's a stick, you can use the t-5 out of a stang. The stock tranny will not hold up and you have to use something else.
Then there's your t-case. I can't remember if you have a 2 or 4 wheel drive, but you'll either need an adapter to run the stock t-case or you can use a dana 20. With the dana 20 however, you'll need new driveshafts.

Since you've got a lil 4 cylinder now, you've probably got a junk rear end that won't hold up too long. The rear end out of the stang isn't going to work. Your best bet is to grab an 8.8 out of a ranger that came with a 4.0, easy, bolt in swap. If you're looking for extra work, you can get one out of an explorer, little bit stronger axles and later ones came with disc brakes, but like I said, if you just use one out of the ranger, it's easier to swap in.

Never seen one in a ranger but seen plenty of 350 and 327 s10's

Wow guys, I never expected this was such a common swap with so much information on it! Hondanator, that's sort of what i was thinking. Just find a donor vehicle with the engine i want and swap everything over to my truck. Fear250r, it's a stick so i could just use the fox body transmission along with everything else? && it's a 2-wheel drive.

So basically, I'll need a stang donor vehicle and i could use everything out of that except the rear end, which i could get from a 4.0 ranger(direct bolt-in) or an explorer? Sorry for all the questions.

You'll have to check on the tranny to use. My truck is an auto, so I planned on using a c4. Also keep in mind you'll probably need stronger springs up front to take the extra weight of the motor, especially putting that into a 4 Banger 2 wheel drive.

The 4.0 is also a common swap into the 4 bangers. Alot less work, but I don't want to sway you away, just throwing it out there.

You'll also need motor mounts, headers and oil filter relocation kit. Possibly a driveshaft, but don't quote me on that one.

Swapping in a 5.0 is much easier in 98-up Rangers. Here's some good info.

i know back in the day the swap was a bit difficult on the older years of ranger as the sump area for the oil pan was all wrong and the v8 chevy engine was a better choice but i've been away from things for too long and aint sure about the newer generation rangers?

my fave hybrid builds were the s10's ..... infact i still have the last 89 X-cab 4x4 that i purchased to build but never did due to the fact that my interests went to 250R's shortly after i purchased the truck. i still want to build it some day.

How about one with a 351 in it? 302 isn't a bad swap, but IMO still underpowered. If I was keeping my ranger it'd get one of the 302's I have laying around for it, but I'm going back to the street world and getting out of dirt.

This is in my brother's ranger and probably soon to be swapped out for a 460 when the time comes...
