I have an 02' 400EX, Had it out yesterday and was running great. I went off trail slightly and jumped off to push it back out onto the trail, when i got back on and shifted into 1st nothing happened! Its like the bike is stuck in neutral almost or the clutch is stuck. it still starting and sounding great. It simply wont lock into any gears! I can feel the shifter clicking through the gears and can hear them as well, the light even shows when in neutral and goes off when i shift to 1st or 2nd. When started i can shift through the gears freely without using the clutch but nothing happens, no locking into gear or anything! Please advise if anyone can help with figuring this one out or may have had same problem. Thanks!!

Is there any tension on the clutch lever when pulling? If you look down to your right foot where the clutch cable attaches to the arm is it moving when you pull in or let out?

The clutch lever has good tension, and it is moving the arm when pulled!?

I'd try something easy like hitting the clutch case with a dead blow hammer just to see if by chance it will free it up. NOT hard enough to dent or break anything but enough to see if it will jar something loose. Probably won't work but it's worth a shot. Short of that, it's probably time to take the cover off and see what's doin'.

I have it in a friends garage i will check what the oil smells like tomorrow! I was ridding the clutch pretty hard in 1st and 2nd gear right before it happened, i will admit that! It also seemed alot hotter than usual. Do you think i just need to replace the clutch plates and such? How can i tell if i do?

Well,
I got the right crankcase cover off, now with it off and the clutch disengaged from the clutch cable it now locks into gear like normal!! So i am suspecting it is something to do with the clutch lever or maybe the clutch plates? Any suggestions!>?
