thats alot of metal. i wouldnt want to put it back together til i knew i got all of that metal out. so for me that would mean splitting the cases. it would be hard to get all that metal out of the bottom end without doing it.

a little side to side is ok but no up and down. if you spin the bearings and they catch or drag at all replace them . and if you got the $ just replace them anyway. have the cylinder checked .

The crank is pressed together. If the big end bearing is bad you pretty much need a machine shop to handle rebuilding the crank.

Crank work can be expensive. Get an estimate on rebuilding your existing crank and then look around for serviceable used cranks. Then weigh the risk/benefit and make a choice. A used crank may have unknown life left in it. But if you're just trying to get it running, a used crank from a running engine might be a good call.

for the money of rebuilding a crank you might be better off buying a new one and you dont take the risk of someone not getting it right

I have the same problem on the rod bearings on a Scam400 I just bought. I can get the whole crank assembly from my local dealer for $250. Thats the route I'm going.
