My buddy has a 2010 x model Bill Ballance edition yfz. Its 4 months old and the motor started smoking and has massive amounts of oil in the air box. Is this high tech high priced bike blown up already after 4 months. He babies this bike so I know he takes good care of it and does routine maintenace and oil changes. Any idea on where to start replacing motor parts???

When was the last time he changed the oil? If you over fill it with oil it will blow oil into the air box. My r has oil once in a while in the air box.

About the smoking is it all stock or did he install a exhaust and air filter?

He changed the oil saturday night and it went hay-wire sunday. I couldnt say if he over filled it or not. I wouldnt think so, but you never know. I know it was alot of oil in the air box...it soaked a paper towel to get it all out.
It does have a LRD slip on and uni filter. The muffler pipe does not fit the stock head pipe worth a darn..its way to big...no collar with the muffler to make it fit tight so it does leak at that joint like crazy (would this make it over heat )?

With the exhaust sounds like the bike is running lean cause of the pipe. I fix the exhaust. Does it have a fuel programer? I would check out yfzcentral for more information. the exhaust is most likely your overheating conditions.

No I know he doesnt have any kind of fuel programmer. Im going to call him and tell him to put all the stock parts back on and start from there.

He is in the process of destroying his quad. He put an exhaust on the quad without adding a programmer to add more fuel. That right there is causing him to be lean. Then to add that the pipe he added does not fit correctly, it is probably leaking between the midpipe and the header causing the quad to run even more lean. If he hasn't yet I see him melting some rings or worse.

Also he could change the oil every 30 minutes but if the air filter doesn't get cleaned and re-oiled every ride he is asking for a rebuild....

If it's 4 months old I'd be taking it back to the dealership. It should be under warranty still.

Dealer isn't gonna warranty something that is riders error.

sounds like wrong exhaust for the quad, no programmer, WOW. probably too much oil, IF it has ever been changed. air filter has prolly never been cleaned and oiled.

sounds to me like someone does not know how to take care of their machine and is blaming yamaha.

Dirty air filters are a fast way to a blown motor.....and yes, that WILL void a factory warranty. Also, I have to fully agree with the whole aftermarket pipe / no programmer statement - he has been running his quad LEAN just by failing to buy a programmer - plus, having the exhaust not even fitting up properly and leaking, that makes it even worse. He's cooking his motor. And yeah, it sounds like he overfilled the oil tank and that's why it's showing up in the airbox......for someone who supposedly takes great care of their quad, he managed to do a lot of damage in a small amount of time. Definitely not a piece of crap quad.....Yamaha can't hold everyone's hand and make sure they do their part in maintaining a perfectly good machine.

Yamaha seems to get blamed for a lot of people's foolish mistakes. Look at the Rhino

If you ride your quad/dirtbike for it's intended purpose the filter is going to get dirty. Basically they void the warranty for not cleaning the filter before bringing it to them. If they pull the motor apart and find dirt in the intake and the cylinder is scarred to hell that's evidence why the motor malfunctioned (Proof the warranty should be voided). That's a valid reason to void the warranty. To see his filter isn't clean and determine that's why the motor malfunctioned.... BS!!! The dealer dictates if your warranty is voided or no by what they report back to the manufacturer. I think it's encouraged to void for silly things like the filter being dirty or for them seeing rubber underneath the tail sections on streetbikes and such. These things come from common riding. But like I said before, if you don't clean it before you take it in, more than likely your screwed!

Has he ran it down the road wide open? Running it on the rev limiter will pump oil out of the overflow into the airbox
