Blown 400ex rear shock?

How can i tell if my rear shock is blown? It feels pretty mushy for my preload settings. and there appears to be oil all over it. ( could be chain lube.. )

press down on your grab bar and let go. If it comes up really fast compared to normal then your shock is blown. If it is from a 2000 400ex I am sure it is due for freshing anyway though send it to gt thunder

what if it it take forever to come back up?

Oil all over it usually means it blew the seals-thus it is blown.

then it is not blown out. the rebound the screw on the bottom of the shock is cranked up so it is that way.
