For those of you that have personaly installed a 416 kit, I am thinking of installing a Hot Cam Stage II and JE Piston 10.8:1. Any insight on what I am getting into, things to look for ....ect....would be very helpful. Does the valves and timing need to be adjusted once the install is complete? Jetting? Currently running a 42 pilot, 158 main with no chock, Mod airbox lid, and a WB R4 slip-on. Does this need to change with the kit?

Thanks again for all the help!

 :D

just make sure you take the decompresser ball and spring out of thr head, also you do not use the decompressor on the cam. get a xr head gasket. your jetting is what i am currently running with a full exhaust.

its not that hard. adjust valves to .005 and .006 latter = exhaust. double check at 20 mins.

put it through a few heat cycles.

do not use synthetics for at least 20-30 hours.

have fun. go rich on the main intially, also 4th clip down on needle

get your head flowed and ported while you have it apart

I agree, get your head ported and polished while it is apart. It makes a world of difference.

i have a 416, if i was to do it over,i would go with 426 11:1 its still reliable

Does porting change the compression any?

What do I use to measure the valves? .005 and .006 latter = Exhaust??

Go to an auto parts store and buy a set of feeler gauges. Make sure the ones you need or on it.

Any major tools that I might need?

Do I need to go buy any major tools to install the kit?

you will need a feeler gauge. ike 5-10 at sears hardware. the intake valve is set at .005 and the exhaust is set at .006, the exhaust valve clearance is larger since it is not cooled by the intake charge so it runs hotter and needs more room for expansion.

you will also need a torque wrench to accuratly tighten bolts. dip ALL the bolts inoil before re-assembly, dry bolts will catch on edges in the threads and give false torque readings, plus it helps from seizing bolts. there like 20 for the cheesy ones and 50 for the nice ones that click, i have the 20 dollar one and i have done okay with it.

get a manual and look over the WHOLE thing(engine, valve train...) before digging into it. i number my bolts and bagged things or put them back where the came from when the machine was apart so it would go back where it came from. when you put the piston in the cylinder lube up the cylinder with oil. i poured oil all over my cam before torqueing down the valve cover.

when doing the vlave clearance, just make it semi-snug on the feeler, shouldnt be loose but it shouldn't bind on the feeler gauge, get a angled one if you can, it makes it easier and more accurate.

YZROOSTINYA - Thanks for all the information. This will really help out! I will let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!

i would assume the valve lash you mentioned is for a stock cam tolerances?

get a manual before you begin and read it several times before starting;)

Not sure what you mean?? I am going to install a Hot Cam Stage II.

OK I'm like 10 million othere poeple and doing the 416 thing. I'm installing a JE 10.8 piston and use a 400ex topend rebuild kit with the 400ex head gasket. Now I was starting to think when the piston said it was for both the ex/xr. If But the compression ratio for the to is diffrent because of the head gasket. My ? is do I have to use the Xr head gasket to get the 10.8 compression ration of can I use the 400ex head gasket to get the 10.8. Thanks.

not a 100% sure but i think you should use the xr head gasket because its steel but id call the manuf of the kit to see there rec on witch to use to get the correct comp ratio as advertised:confused:

the cam should have a spec card and also a set of valve lash clearence numbers. it may be the same as stock....but in most cases a different profile cam requires different clearence numbers...just double check:ermm:

An EX head gasket will give you the proper deck hight if you are buying the JE 10.8:1 piston. I just built one myself with that piston and the HCII. I measured it after, and the pin hight of the piston is at the proper hight compared to stock. Therefore you can use a stock gasket.

Not sure where these guys got those valve lash measurements, but my service manual says, .004 for Exhaust, and .005 for the Intake. My HCII did come with a spec sheet, but it did not have any specifications for valve clearances, so I use the stock clearances.

what power output you looking at by doing a 416 or a 426? is it a large addition to the power that is corruently on tap? or is it onlylike 2-3HP and do you need full exhaust?

stock is .004 and .005

hot cam 2 says .006 and .008 but that is for EXTENDED desert running

.005 and .006 will do you fine, you do want a little more clerance than stock bucause yo will bill slighter hotter with more lift and high comp.

you are only adding about 5-6 PEAK hp but in sections of the rpm range you will see as much as 15HP over stock

at 7500 rpm the stock motor is like 12-15, with my setup its like 28 or so. BIG DIFF, its pulls longer and harder

you can run a slip on but i have a full system. it all depends what you wanna spend

Hey John, how much did it cost you to do your 416, including the cam, work and all the parts? I'm just wondering because i think i might want to do one this spring.

YZROOSTINYA

i'll do it for the right price, takes 2 days:D

parts alone are like 400 about. i will do it for 75$ if ya want

Hey Pappy!,The card in my cam has a valve lash of .15mm on intake and .20mm on exhaust. Now i dont know what that comes to but i have heard to stay stock .004-.005 and i have heard go up to .005-.006.Is valve lash and clearance the same thing? Can you tell me what .15mm-.20mm convert to?Thanks.

That sounds good. I start making a lot of cash in the spring when i start landscaping again. I'll do it mid spring.

Thanks!

luvmyex....i havent a clue as how to convert it...and if i could find my feeler gauges it lists both sets of #'s on them(lol...no conversion needed) the best thing is to call a few reputable engine builders and get a few opinions.

.15 = .006 and .20 = .008

Lash and clearance is the same thing.

I was wrong in my earlier post. There is other valve lashes for the hotcam (sorry yzroostinya). YZRoostinonya I set my valve lashes to what is above, but doesn't specify for what kind of riding (ex: desert riding). Good thing I only had about 30 min on this new engine.:o

i run .005 and .006 because i mostly trail ride. unless you constanly run high rpm for EXTENDED time then you will be fine. .006 and .008 is what the spec card says. I spoke with Tony at Hotcam for awhile about my setup and we both agreed my clearance was A O K.

Steve, Not sure if you want me to do it or if your gonna do it yourself, either way, good luck and just let me know.

.004 and .005 are for the stock cam.

these are just my opinions and experiances, take what you read on this board and use it as a guide then make your own decisions.

i am at a 155 main right now and its perfect, the 158 was still to rich, maybe if I open up the airbox more I will go with a 158

You definitley need a shop manual, make sure your read and understand the engine section before you start. Once you have everything back together turn the motor over by hand. That way if you got something back together wrong it want get torn up when you try to start it. You will need metric tools. 10mm, 12mm, 14mm, and 17mm sockets and wrenches. Definitly a torque wrench and feeler gauges. Big WARNING if you get a ROSS piston the rings are sent over sized and you have to gring the ends to get the proper "ring end gap". I used a small file to do this. Also if you do not have a ring compressor you will need to install the piston into the bottom of the cylinder on the bench and then set the whole assembly down onto the connecting rod, insert the wrist pin and clip. Arrow on the piston points to the front of the motor. Good luck, don't be afraid to ask someone that has done this for help. Remember the question that you don't ask is the dumb one!
Hope this helps
Later:)
