ok, looking for input from owners of Custom Axis shocks and posting this on the other site too...

there are metal collars in the middle of the shocks that can move up and down. is this normal??
at ride height:

lifting up the collars with my fingers:

also on one side the upper collar moves a little bit too (but only on one side):

lastly the shock cushions/bumpers have a different color and shape on left vs right:

that's normal, however they may need serviced I had a set of custom axis that needed serviced every 2-3 rides gt thunder serviced them and he said that's just the way race shocks are. what do you guys think about that? sorry to steal your post but thought is add that in since you were already on the topic.oh and by the way nice looking r. can we see some more pics?

sorry didn't see the last part, but those bumpers should not be different.

Those are your crossovers. As the suspension goes through its travel, they control when the load is transferred to the next spring. The right bumpstop is just folded in on itself. You may be able to pick it out with a screwdriver.

it was 800screws JP hybrid with the DrQ zilla motor, there has been a few pics of it on here...

thanks for the information on the sleeves...
so do these shocks just leak oil like BP or what?? if you notice the two bump stops, they are not the same color. I assume its from oil soaking into the stop thats crushed down. all three shocks have oily residue on the springs. the back shock bumpstop is completely black...

guess I need to yank them off and send them out for fresh oil and seals... is Custom Axis the best place to have them serviced??

Last summer I brought a Walsh 250R with Custom Axis. The rear shock was too long (was for the Laeger CR500 chassis) and I worked with Custom Axis to get it quickly fixed before the next race. They were awesome to work with. Answered all my questions (and there were a ton) in both email and phone conversations.

The guy actually working on my shock called me to discuss options (ended up replacing body, still need to do the shaft) to fit my budget and time limit. Time from sending shock to them and getting it back, around 1 week.

So...yeah I would send them back to Custom Axis and tell them all about your set up so they can make sure they are not only valved correctly, right lengths and spring rates.

I will never have any shock but Custom Axis in my garage, great product and even better customer service. To me...customer service goes a long way.

gt thunder does good work for a good price I think its under $100 for service on two fronts. but from what I understand if you don't absolutely love those shocks I would sell them and go with a different brand because that $100 every couple rides adds up fast trust me. and they are very desirable so you may be able to break even on another set of shocks. maybe peps or something I went with works and I love them even though they are out dated. hope this helps.

Something else was wrong if you need them serviced every couple rides. It was not the shocks.

In my opinion...
Custom Axis and PEP are the two top shocks in my mind...and have been since I started racing in 1999. Everything else is a step below.

Just as I would never send PEP shocks to anyone but Wayne, I would never send Custom Axis shocks to anyone but them.

Unless your a top level racer, you shouldn't need to service your shocks every couple of rides.

ha well that's definatly not the problem. lol

hartwill, my 2 cents, but if GT thunder cant do a Custom Axis rebuild that lasts more than a couple rides, then maybe GT isnt the place to send them too??

From looking around on the Custom Axis website, they are only calling for service once a year.

I know GT does good work on other shocks, not trying to bash GT or anything.

yea your probably right but they are local for me and that's why I went their. do you think maybe hare scrambles/woods riding is tougher on shocks than racing I don't but that's what I do so maybe this could explain it or maybe the were valves wrong for my application. who knows, too may variables..

Hartwill: either you or GT Thunder should check your setup since you're needing service that often. Something is definately wrong.

OP: if the shocks are correct extended and compressed lengths, then Axis shocks are a nice setup.
