Hey I'm just seeing if there is any interest in a Carbon Fiber MX Skid/Glide plate for Laeger Narrow and Stock-style frames. If I can get enough that are interested I think we can get FW to make us a few of them. Let me know if you'd be interested in one...

3.5mm thick carbon fiber

Looks similar to the attached:

I may be interested in one of each. What riding would it be useful for though? I think woods/XC would bust it up pretty quick.

Its and MX skid plate, similar to the one Quadtech used to make. Protects the motor from when you case it off a jump and also gravel/rocks kick ups. Not intended for XC, however, maybe working on that design too.

I would be interested in a mx or xc one!

Any idea on price? I'd be most interested in the narrow frame one.

He's working on it, should know more next week. Basically, needs to figure out what hardware is needed, etc...

I would be interested in two but only if they were full skid and could get them in red and blue for stock style frame:D

Just checking in... The price will depend on the final material cost and also the hardware cost.

The glide plate is a "mx" style engine skid, not a full chassis skid. The only difference is the front of the frame rails will not be covered.

I am working on a couple variations of the plate as far as materials go, but right now 3.5 mm carbon fiber seems to be what we're going with. I've done quite a bit of testing on these plates for 450R's and YFZ's with great results.

More info soon...

Thanks, Jay

Made a little progress on this, it was on the back burner for awhile... :D

Still need to figure out the mounting hardware, this one is for Laeger narrow chassis:

Nice Troy. I'd like something similar but in a polyurethane, similar to a cutting board but in black.

Hey Jay, any word on my hoods? :D

You'll have to ask Jay on the material. We talked about using polypropelene or what ever that stuff is called... but that was about a year ago and I don't remember what the outcome was. Basically the finish wouldn't be as nice, I think that was the main issue. I think he is still experimenting with different materials, we also talked about mixing Kevlar with the Carbon fiber. (it lays up virtually the same) but is ugly when finished, so there would be a layer CF... hit Jay up, he can probably explain that a little better.

Thanks guys for the compliments, I need to work out the hardware, and then finish the models for the wide style frames... I only get to work on this stuff at night some times so it just takes me a little longer.

Bring on the questions... :)

Once we figure out all of the hardware, we will have the final pricing.

Dan, I'll contact you soon about your hood, should be completed in a week or so.

These skids are made to take on impact, and they have been tested on both YFZ and TRX450R race quads in the past with great results. Keep in mind, these are for MX or TT use, not for XC.

We have looked into doing both the Poly and the Carbon Fiber/Kevlar. Once we can gauge that the interest is there, we will go further into other materials if need be.

Thanks, Jason

I have two Walsh narrow frames that are in need of frame skid plates. We race MX so very interested.

One question, occasionally there are rocks on the track. Not boulders we would bounce off (like XC) but just larger rocks laying there waiting to be hit. Will these skid plates take that kind of hit?

These plates will definitely hold up to your normal forms of MX racing. They are mean't to take a beating, and also be lightweight.

If the interest is there, I will do some of these in Kevlar/Carbon mixture, and can increase the thickness to help with durability. The 100% Carbon Fiber ones are going to be very strong, but the kevlar mixture will give them a bit more impact resistance.

I have personally run the MX skid plate on one of my past 450R's and didn't have one bit of trouble on an MX course where rocks are sometimes laying out.

Let me know the price and if you need any measurements from the Walsh chassis.

I'm glad the interest is there. It seems like you 250R guys are into innovation, and I like that! Been doing a lot with the 250R chassis lately and loving it. Keep your eyes out for more Carbon Fiber and Titanium parts to roll out the door.

I'm working closely with Troy on these plates and once we come up with the solution of this first plate ( hardware, fitment, chassis checks ) we will be releasing the details on these.

Any other flat Carbon Fiber parts you guys are looking for?

I've been working on something too, but if it came from fourwerx that would be badass.

I would definitley be interested in a skid for a stock frame. Poly or CF/Kev mix prefered, since I plan to ride woods, trails, light mx, heck, just about everything. Gonna want one in the next couple months to! Not takin the bike out with fresh powder on everything untill the frame is protected.

Oh yeah, whats up w the NACA duct hood? I only saw it available for fullbores, I'll more than likely be running Maiers.

FW_cArBoN
06-24-2011, 07:04 AM
More skid plate styles to come. I can also do these in a couple different colors, but I will probably only offer them in two colors.

On the other parts, has anyone made frame guards in the past? What type of protection are you wanting to see, and how much coverage?

On the FWC Duct hoods, right now they are only available for the fullbore plastics. We are unsure whether we will be producing them for the OEM/Maier plastics. We will be unveiling a 'NEW' style 250R hood in early fall of this year though...

Thanks, Jason

i would def. be in for a carbon fiber skid plate, .... and frame guards!! the frame guards in a few different colors would be great to protect the powder coat from rubbing off near where your boots/ inside leg/calves hit the frame!!

Might do another run in the future, they were very popular in the begging and have not had any interest since.

To justify the cost, I'd have to probably have 10 committed people.

Thank you, Jason

Id like to see them thicker or harder or something. I would buy another. I pretty much destroyed my last one racing MX.

That's the other problem, there is at least 5 different frames and they are all different.

You could make them out of the sticky 3m stuff and just have them stuck to the frame rails. Maybe make them only 4 inches long. Most if not all the frames have the wear section at the same place lol.

That would be a good idea! 3M Di Noc is the stuff you're thinking of, and you can get like a 12" square for 5 bucks on ebay which would be enough to do both sides. It would be super easy to install and just cut the shape with a razor blade after installed.
