does anyone know off the top of their head what size the nut is on the bottom of the steering stem?

7/8 works thats what i used, not sure if its a metric nut tho i dont feel like converting it to metric right now, but 7/8 worked for me

just went to the shop out back and its a 22mm wrench or socket that takes it off.
