lightening a flywheel

whats involved in lightening a flywheel? is it just the case of shaving off a few mm's with a lathe and install her back into the motor?

when i lightened my ds 650 flywheel i loved it. cut the outside edge. just had the hub shaved 14 mm also. more top speed, faster aceleration, , no loss in torque. i would recommend having a good shop do the work, better tolerances = longer lasting
