Hey guys, i am always hearing about people claiming that they can just lift the front end of there 400ex up in 2nd and 3rd gear, and being able to do wheelies on demand. Well......... i can't...... i just put a new clutch in it with HD Springs, i am using the correct oil, so i know its not the clutch slipping. I have the +6 Sparks Key, and a White Bro's E-Series and FMF Powerbomb Headers. The sprockets are stock size with BRAND NEW maxxis razr's ( never ridden on ). I mean the atv is fast on my standards. ( and my standards are pretty good, because my KX250 is FAST! ) I just feel like there is more in that thing than is coming out... Any ideas? Something that comes to my mind is jetting. i am right around 500ft. What would somebody with a similar setup suggest to run?

The clutch aint got nothing to do with balls out H.P. Looks like your motor is pretty much stock so that's how she's gonna run. With a name like trailrider894, the stock gearing should be more than sufficient. As far as jetting, what's in it now ???? Give up the info. to get the answers. And finally, A KX250 doesn't even compare. Totally different Beasts.

its should have a 145 or 148 for the main jet.

what is in it ?

and maybe we can help you get it where you need it.

around a 158 or 160 main with the full system and the box open. 38 pilot 3.5 turns out and leave the needle. that would be where my jetting would be at if i was going to start. you could try out a 40 and see how that is also. it should be pretty fun with all of that on it. maybe take some plates out of the white bros, maybe 5 or 6 would be better for the low end grunt. I am not sure how many you have but i would say around 8 or 9 if i took a stab. I am not really sure how many they actually come with. steve

Drop a tooth in front and you'll have no problems pulling wheelies.

do you know how to do wheelies? Not to sound rude but i mean have you done it on other atv's? if you are having trouble first start by sitting furthur back and "popping" the clutch...i mean give it hell and pop it out i promise it will wheelie....

Yeah i do know how to do wheelies. I didn't mention in my Sig, but i do own a 250r Quadracer and a KX250 and i am very familiar with the process of a wheelie. Mind you guys i have raced as a substitute in OXC and MX before in the past on a 450r ( dealer provided ).

when really on the throttle I could pull the wheels up shift from 1-2 and 2-3 with whats in my sig. That was with a 155 main, I put in a 158 and it doesn't have quite as much top end, I am sure I am running a tad rich, but I prefer it that way. Being as hot as it is I could probably put the 155 back in to get a little more power back, but I really don't need it for the amount of riding I do.

How much do you weigh? I found that lighter riders can do it with ease, but us big boys (#190lbs here) cant do it to well.

I'm 180 in my skivvies so I am sure I am a big boy with boots and jeans on haha. It is kind of hard to get a wheelie without giving it some serious throttle.

There are so many things to consider here. RPM range will play a big part, as well as your rolling speed, the traction you have available, the gearing you have, your size and weight, throttle response, and last but not least the sores your hearing this from.

Im sure thats true, but im about 208 lbs 6'0" without my gear, and i find myself doing wheelies while i am sitting on the gas tank as far forward as i can. And i don't pop the clutch either, just rolling in 1/4 throttle in 3rd gear and pin it. thats how i get it up. :blah:
but if im in 1st gear, then i will pop the clutch because it quickly revs out in 1st.
this is in loose sand/dirt.

I am using Bel-Ray ATV Racing Oil right now. I ordered Honda GN4 today and plan on changing the oil with that.

the oil has nothing to do with it, I use regular 10w30 castrol and never had a issue and my quads FASTTT!!!....lol.

anyway, the oils not the issue...lol.

What jet size do you have in there, are you using a aftermarket CDI/ Rev box?

I'm 195lbs. I only have a few bolt ons and heavy 22 inch holeshots on the back with stock gearing. She comes up with no problems. Check the spark plug and air filter. My quad ran like it was down on power recently. I checked my filter and it was dirty as hell. It was real dusty on the last few rides. It was over a year old so I got a new one and a new plug while I was at it and its as good as new!
